Cannot find the words
This move is more intense than most of challenging suspense films I ever saw.

It has no drama in it, except for the drama of life itself. Nothing really happens, except for the life itself. Nothing very clever is said, except for the wisdom of life itself.

Life, with its crown of creation, love, needed no words. No special deeds. Less is more. It needs to be there, to really see, listen, share, and mend everything in order to preserve this exquisite fabric of life.

The beauty of expression is so overwhelming that I had to stop three times to be able to breathe. I could not, I did not want to break the spell with my movements. There sre three scenes that support the whole movie.

A slow train with three stations.

Please, after you read my words, try to forget them and watch the movie.

Nothing happens in the film, except for the life itself.

Started OK, wen on downway
The first season was OK. It had a story, some reasonable acting, some reasonable directing and decent cinematography.

The second season was like made by some advanced students having fun doing it: it was good by design, why pay attention to quality. With a beer it went down somehow.

The third was exemplary bad: bad story, bad acting, bad directing. As if everyone was trying harder from minute to minute to press the gas pedal, but there wan gas to pass to the engine. I force myself to watch it, just out of curiosity, out of some lost feeling of Israeli solidarity... But no, it failed totally.

Season four will be skipped. Not skipped. Avoided.

A starter the size of a full meal
100% authentic! 100% funny. 100% traumatic Jewish mother and uncles. Rachel Sennott is wonderful. Excellent directing, photography. A pleasure to watch. But, it is not in the class of Andrei Rublev, not in the class of Dr. Strangelove, the story is somewhat thin... So, 7 stars. Go for it.

Babylon Berlin

One of greatest, mostly due what is behynd the police work imagery
What makes this tile so good is, IMHO, he ability to present the slow, but sure ascent of enemies of democracy. Yes, there are a lot of good crime series, but all I watched, except this one, have no substance beyond the crime. A totalitarian system has a blood and flesh figure to offer. A democracy is a word, a notion, has nothing simple to commit to. An empty belly will run for the strong image of the savior. The slow, but unstopped march of the enemy, is depicted as a background that sent frowns through my body. The German democracy was not loved, but respected. The democratic forces did not understand that a democracy cannot defend itself against a non democratic assault by democratic means only. And they lost to Hitler. Of course the story is much more complex and deep, and this is not the place for history. As a cinematic endeavor, on a regular basis I got lost myself and at every episode end I could not understand how time had passed so quickly. A deep pleasure to watch. A truly European and and German gem. I gave it only 9 stars because there are some moments when one can see and smell the Hollywood style. Bravo!

Excellent idea in the hands of low grade students
So many wrote before me! There is a story about a door in Money Heist. A story that left me numb for hours. Something so powerful, so deep, so human, so poetic, that I pledged to follow all of it all.But that is most of it. I am frustrated by the fact that such a good idea was trusted in the hands of low grade students in cinema. Good actors do not save it. Nothing makes sense, nothing evolves naturally from the plot or characters, except for stupid acts, unrealistic arms handling, unrealistic fight scenes. It is as if the script is 30% written, 40% taken from Hollywood and the rest is left to fill the gap in order for the action to go on.Elite soldiers that cannot shoot at the target, everyone is driven by ego and hormones. The police is shown made of morons, with one woman exception, etc... Go for the door and stop there.

S1-7 almost perfect, S8 Holywood stupidity
What is to be added to what is already written? I only want HBO to understand the very very low product S8 is. One of the lowest I know: broken plot, broken seasons, useless CG, the very few unexpected deeds were indeed poorly designed, developed and acted. It is as if some college kids did it. Not apity, but SHAME.

Alien: Covenant
(2017)

Veni, vidi,... no vici
Well, take all the past alien movies, chop some good parts, put them together and ... voila... the movie. Well shot, well acted, some interesting ideas to think about it. Not enough. Half baked concepts are not enough to grip me like the old aliens. On top of it, a bunch of "in charge" who succumb to sentimental behavior with deadly consequences, and endanger over two thousand living humans... Mr. Scott, you can do much better.

Poetry in classical rhythm
Well... how shall I put it? If you want some poetry about the human soul and there is no book available go and see Kolya. In a world voided of any human personality, needs, hopes only kindness can touch and heal. And who in this world can show all this better than a kid. Take your time and go for a stroll in the sunshine of humanity. I can only write five lines. I can only write five lines. I can only write five lines. I can only write five lines. I can only write five lines.I can only write five lines. I can only write five lines.I can only write five lines. I can only write five lines.I can only write five lines. I can only write five lines.

Proverka na dorogakh

War inspired, but mostly about people in war
I don't recall hearing any music in the film, except for people playing IN the film, not for the film. This is good, cause music distracts. War takes ordinary people to extraordinary situations where the real soul can be discovered. It felt natural for me to walk into the frame and participate in the dilemmas of everyone in the film. And I was not sure what I would have done in similar situations. I, simply, lack the capacity to fully absorb the depths of the soul searching in the film. It has not the brutality of Klimov, nor the conscience drama of Shepitko, but it has the same depth of penetration into the human soul at those defining moments. Just to set my scale, 10 goes to Andrei Rublev. It is NOT on a par with Klimov's "Come and see", nor with Shepitko's "Ascent".

Humans are about humanity
Great cinematography, great directing, great acting. But this is not what makes a film great because they are mere ingredients. What makes this movie great is the humanity of its characters. It does not matter how good or bad is the system. Honest souls will always have something true to tell you about, to show you that even in the middle of the winter, the cold, the night, the lack of plenty there are human dramas involving all that humans can do. Love, crime, compassion, friendship, assistance... Not like a solemn hymn to joy of life, but as a simple story about some lives that are touched by others' and can touch the others' in return. Simply, humanly. Six people living in a flat show us, among other things, that what defines us is not the distance we put between us, but the closeness, the touch.

Diletant rendition of a tough problem
The word that came most of the time to my mind was "dilettante". Morality in science is a tough problem and should be addressed accordingly. The story is powerful, but the realization is far from best Russian movies. The acting is mediocre, not due to poor acting, but because of a bad script. There was not much to act upon. On top of it, camera work looked like a first grade student course. Most of the scenes did not "flow" one from another, but somehow jumped out and into action. I wanted to see or hear something that will make me think hard about the idea presented, but I found nothing of the sort. Four stars for the cinematic achievement and an additional one for the topic.

How do we say poetry in Moviesh?
One can write prose, one can write poetry, one can write poetry inside prose... One makes movies. Period.

And what if it is more detailed? How can we say it? The people in this move have nothing left but their humanity, kindness and customs. Humanity is not enough, kindness is not enough. Customs are not helping. A combination of them, patience and belief in success to make one's life happy... Humans stripped to bare necessities, food, water, shelter, remain humane and kind and strive for happiness. The end shot ties all the ties tight, like a poem.

Pure poetry.

This is where Kusturica learned from
Not the best cinematography (who cares?), not the best acting (who cares?), not the best script (who cares?), but... It has a story, it has wit, it has fire, it has no dead moments, it is true, it has a heart, it has a strong punch at the last scene... It has everything to want to watch it again, and again. You want to be one of them because being one of them makes your blood boils, makes you cry with them because of petty lies, makes you smell the sweat of the wild party... At dawn, when the fumes of the heavy drinking start to dissipate you want to pull yourself together because of the hard-to-digest answer.

It is where Kusturica was invented. It is where Kusturica learned his metier.

Isn't this enough for a true experience?

Amintiri din epoca de aur

This is how we lived, not due to naivety, but forced by "Party"
This is how we lived. We were forced. We were not naive. Looking back 50 years I feel my life was unreal, but not. It is true to the letter. Only, what? Looking back the stupidity of the system (it did not build in 50 years a war destroyed country, but destroyed what was left from the war) appears funny. We had to cheat in order to survive. To cheat ourselves and others, on many levels. But mostly we cheated the system. This is so funny and sad about the movie. And yes, there are inconsistencies in many details, but is is so important the color of the license plate, or some uniform detail? No, IMHO. It is the impossible situations people were forced to live every day and survive. And among it all there was love, honesty, theft... A life. It is a wonder how people can smile and laugh at those hard to believe "legends", but that's life. The movie is funny, cause stupidity is funny. The movie is human because it is about simple human being in stupid situations. If you will not laugh, at least will enjoy realistic acting and directing.

As stupid as can be
Let's see... Take one of the most (maybe THE most) famous and respected story in Japan culture, add some Keano (to reduce the expectations), add some scenery stolen from the Lord of the rings (to what about the expectations?), add some Hollywood mentality (to even more reduce the expectations), force some decent Japanese actors (one, Hiroyuki Sanada, or two were good indeed) to speak English for those Americans unable to read subtitles (to push the expectations almost to the bottom), and finally crown it all with poor directing (to kill it dead)...

For the memory of Hiroshi Inagaki, Kenji Mizoguchi, Kunio Watanabe, I suggest this movie to be banned as poor taste.

A shame of a movie
Never until now a grossly stupid film moved me to writing about it. One star for the excellent computer graphics and another one for all the rest. It has bad directing, bad script, bad acting, illogical course of actions and illogical decisions. The most dreadful character was the American government representative who made the only truly logical decisions, but painted egoistic and inhuman. And his name is not John Smith, but Carl Anheuser. The rest of the wold politicians are such kind and considerate humanists! It stinks, and I shall not say anti American or anti... If you are only interested in computer graphics, go for it, if you want something more, like a message or an after thought, give it up.

Perfect camera work
A simple love story in war time. A good guy and a bad guy and a girl. The trivial love story has some patriotic ingredients, a little bit of propaganda and a somewhat artificially dramatized end. Maybe one must carry the cross because some frivolous behavior during hard times. Here the movie misses. BUT... it is told in a stunning imagery language. The crowning moment is a most beautiful "sentence" of death and life left behind: the hero's death. The most intense parting from the beauty and love in life. As if someone is seeing instead of hearing some of Mahler's ninth. In the end the hero falls like Mahler's hammer blow. Pity camera work was not matched by the rest of the team.

Sweet Movie
(1974)

Politics
For those who ask what is this movie about, it is about us and our childish and deadly belief in political doctrines, east, west alike. The "western" (American) life is chocolate coated but tasteless (money has no taste), while the "eastern" (communist) is a close death-trap-ship full of useless sugar where people play with shi... (what actually communists do). So, why children in the movie? Because they are untouched and they are our hope. They can be talked in with sweets and sex, but in the end they will will reborn (spiritually) and save us. This is why the last scene has the camera moving from the feet upward (or better head ward), sort of seeing Jesus on the cross from down up, coming back to life. This move, actually, needs no dialogs. The images are a language (a sign of a great movie) in itself, and as such the visual movie "speaks" for itself. So, please do not indulge in simple minded acts like being shocked or disgusted, or you name it. Simply, real simply, like a child in the movie, listen to the story with your eyes, mind and soul. Why not 10 stars? Because it is not at the same level as Andrei Rublev.

The movie that cannot be made and cannot be seen
After one finishes viewing it, and only afterward, one realizes that this movie cannot be made. This movie was there all the time, always. It only requested a camera, like some smoke lamp that visualizes an invisible laser beam. It is like carving away chunks of darkness to reveal the light inside. And after all the efforts to come to terms with the reality one realizes that this movie cannot be seen: too deep, too wide, too high, too vast, too beautiful, too painful. In the end, it strikes you with the most hard and harsh of them all questions that cannot be asked, but only answered: the deepest sense of joy of life comes from the simplest acknowledgment of the joy of being in life. This, and only this can explain why sheer opulence replaces the ascetic simple beauty in Andrei Rublev.

One for a desert island
This movie belongs to the group of artistic achievements that cannot be described by simple words, if by words at all. It is beyond words. True, pure art. One must see it and absorb it. There are no good and/or bad scenes. It is a complete and closed entity. One must see it many times, at various ages. It is like seeing again and again, every morning the same new life long love that makes life meaningful. One discovers every day new light and new images, inside and around. One cannot absorb it in one view, one should not attempt to absorb it in one view, one must not absorb it in one view. This movie is a life long artistic companion. It is precisely because of this richness of experiences that it provides, that I did not tell a single word about the movie. Look at me, at what it did to me, and hope for the like for you.
