Hot Boy Noi Loan va Cau Chuyen ve Thang Cuoi, Co Gai Diem va Con Vit
(2011)

Superbly emotional film
Whilst it is very emotional viewing to see the story unfold, the director Ngoc Dang Vu has done a stunning job and the cinematography and pace of the film are superb. He and his writers clearly express a less-than-optimistic view on the affect prostitution has on these young people's lives, which of course may not be the same for everyone in every country but it certainly is a believable story for these young people in their poor circumstances.

There are a few love stories unfolding in the film and it's the least likely one that ultimately proves to be the strongest. When the cold-faced Lam explains to the young, scared Khoi that sex and love are not the same thing he's right. There's no resolution at the end, instead it is a memorable journey with 5 people and if you ever get the chance to see this film I thoroughly recommend it.

Patagonia
(2010)

The most beautiful film I have seen in years
I saw this film without knowing much about it except that there was a migration of some Welsh people from Europe to Patagonia in the 1865. There are two stories unfolding simultaneously in the present day; one of a Welsh couple travelling in Patagonia and the other of an elderly grandmother and her teenage nephew travelling in Wales in search of her mother's farm. Each story is utterly convincingly told, amid breathtaking textures of Argentinan and Walsh landscapes and although there is no connection at all between them, the two stories balance each other perfectly in the way the relationships develop.

This film is of course in Spanish and Welsh but is intelligently subtitled in English so as not to damage the film's beauty.

Riparo
(2007)

Trust and strength
A beautifully filmed story about trust and the strains that out-of-the-blue events can place on it.

Its pace is humdrum, the boy is emotionally needy and inexperienced and the two women have some differences they haven't yet come to terms with as a couple. The three main characters are totally believable, vulnerable and engaging - I couldn't help but feel empathy for all of them.

I really didn't notice if there were mistakes in the background, the story about the three of them had me captivated. I thoroughly enjoyed this film.
