The Voice Within
(1946)

Watchable
I post a review for any film that lacks one, so here goes... my note is similar to the synopsis. As follows 'Set in N. Ireland a man is deserting the IRA, his brother accidentally kills a policeman while smuggling to get money for his brother's escape. Both are in love with the same girl, and the policeman's dog keeps on the trail of the killer! It's watchable in the Talking Pictures print which has 30 min's missing!' I think it's worth adding that this cut print recently shown on TP is coherent and despite the small budget there appears to be some location shooting and the acting is decent. Any fans of old British films should feel it's worth 45 minutes of their life, lets see if anyone else offers a different opinion.

Go and Get It

The first man in a monkey suit film?
I add a review if a film has no yet received one. I recently saw this at the Gothique film society screening at the Cinema Museum in London, it should be noted the intertitles were live translated as they are in Italian (it's the only known print), this is my review... Oddity, the first film to feature a human brain transplanted into a gorilla, however this is only a minor sub-plot, in the main it's a story of newspaper rivalry, with skulduggery afoot, and a junior reporter as hero. It's a plot that's way too narratively driven to work as a silent, there are endless intertitles to try and explain what's what, the only cinematic bit of the film is some crazy stunts near the end, which don't make sense from a story point of view. In it's favour, it's rare and there is a man in a monkey suit.

I waited a bit before posting this, as I hoped someone would beat me to it with a more positive review.

Rip Van Winkle
(1921)

Dull!
As this has no review yet this is my viewing note from last night... 'Inept none story about a very lazy drunkard set in pre independent USA, one night he falls foul of elves and sleeps for 20 years to awake in a newly independent country. There is also some plot about a local crooked businessman trying to con him out of his property.' The surviving copy is not the best, but even if perfect I doubt I would care for it, hopefully someone who likes it may post a review in future. The best I can say for it is it only took an hour to tick off another fantasy film.

What Next?
(1974)

Routine.
I enter a review for any film I've seen that lacks one, this is it... 'Children's Film Foundation - Kid gets accidental bang on head, allows him to make random correct predictions, along with a couple of friends & a newspaper man, they go after a criminal gang and buried loot. It's an ok hour.' I saw it 3 weeks ago it was shown on UK satellite channel London Live, I waited hoping someone who liked it more than me, would post a review, as my rating is well below the current average.

Quel fantasma di mio marito
(1950)

Weak Spirits!
I insert reviews for films I have seen that lack one, here goes... Oh dear! Italian 'comic fantasy' stupid journalist sent to cover the then current turmoil in Palestine attempts to fake an incident to return a hero to his girlfriend, it all goes wrong and his return is only as a spirit. This is a dull plodding overlong badly scripted, acted & directed failure. I looked forward to seeing this, a euro fantasy I was not aware off, bid disappointment, poor film.

Let's Go
(1923)

Forgotten Star?
I'm inserting reviews for films that lack one.... So here it is 'Heir to cement company flees town pursued by police for dangerous driving, he hops a freight train to check out a non paying company in a small backwoods town, where he finds crooks and falls for the sheriffs daughter, it's ok.' My interrogative heading relates to the producer / star Richard Talmadge an ex acrobat, who not surprisingly was a physical comedian, the opening credits make big play that he did all his own stunts, no camera tricks. He soon switched to stunt and 2nd unit work, and had a long career, however I had never heard of him, and his films appear to be forgotten, this is the first / only review and it has at present 16 votes. All that said there are a few good stunts as he travels the freight train, and mixes with the baddies, however I slightly preferred Laughing at Danger (1924) the other film on the Alpha DVD, both prints are worn but watchable. overall I rate this ok.

Die andere Seite
(1931)

Good version of Journey's End
I'm adding reviews for films that lack one, so here goes... 'Set in the English trenches on the western front in 1918 a few days before a major offensive; the new officer arrives fresh from training, he has pulled strings to serve under his old friend (C.Veidt) who is engaged to his sister, however his friend is none too pleased as the pressure of the front has made him turn to drink, not something he wants to get back to his intended. Based on Journey's End, not a film that would be made in Germany a few years later. Good film.' I got this from a collector, it had English subtitles, was a good clean print, though it ran 97 min, so possibly 10 min' is missing? My reason to get this was C.Veidt, I will watch anything he's in, and this gives him a good part to play, the film is well made, well acted by all, in fact I liked it more than the famous J.Whale version made the previous year. Recomended if you can find a copy.

A Lady Mislaid
(1958)

A fair way to pass an hour.
I'm inserting reviews for films I've seen that lack one. This is a fairly obscure (see how few votes it has) British comedy thriller. I got a copy from a collector a while back and watched it last week, my brief note is... 'A couple of sisters are living at a remote cottage, then the police show up looking for the last resident, who may be buried at the premises! A fair way to pass an hour.' It is clearly taken from a stage play, the entire film is set in the cottage, with various people comming and going. Cast wise Phyllis Calvert & Thorley Walters will be well known to anyone who likes British films of this period, and they will be the audience for this film, who should enjoy it.

PS I was very pleased to see it, as director David MacDonald is on my 'must see all his films' list.

La llamada del sexo
(1977)

A mess!
I'm adding reviews for films that lack one, even tosh like this... Incoherent messy 'thriller' involving a man seeking a divorce from his wife, both of whom are unfaithful at every opportunity. Our man has on the plus side an advertising job with no end of willing ladies, and on the minus side a wife who won't play ball divorce wise, a clairvoyant friend who predicts for him a bad future, and unresolved hazy memories of an incestuous past! Poor!

Die sieben Raben
(1937)

Good early fairy-tale.
I insert reviews for films I've seen that lack one, here is a chance to recomend one such film.... Based on a Grimm's fairy tale this is a stop-motion puppet animation tale of a girl who goes on a quest, to save her seven brothers, that were transformed into ravens shortly after her birth, to complicate matters she has to remain mute. It is very well made and has a good sense of the magical reality of the fairy-tale world, of magic and princes, both the backgrounds and animation are realised to a high standard. Also worth noting is that though this is made when the Nazis were in total control of Germany, I at least spotted no unpleasant elements, it is indeed a charming film. Good 4/7.

La proie du vent
(1927)

Dull!
I'm inserting reviews for films that so far lack one, this is my note on this film... 'Poor early Clair effort, an early aviator crash lands and is recovering in a remote eastern European country, where he falls for the countess, then (spoiler redacted)! The pacing is poor, and confusing, dull! So far I have managed to see 17 R.Clair films, and I find his work variable, some being excellent 6/7, The Ghost Goes West, And Then There Were None; down to poor 2/7, this & Break the News. The print I viewsd was a decent restoration, so hopefully someone else will post a more positive view.

Game for Three Losers
(1965)

Routine
I am inserting reviews for films I've seen that lack one... My brief note on this when I saw it in 1986 was... ''Extreemly routine E.Wallace quickie with a blackmail plot that could be written on the back of a bus ticket- rare leading role for M.Gough.'' As with most of the Edgar Wallace series of the early 60's this title has 2 entries on IMDB, originally listed as part of a tv series, as these films were first screened in the USA, and under which there is a better review than mine! and then later this one where it's entered as a film. 1/10 looks a harsh rating, I think I would up-rate this if I saw it again.

No Rain at Timburi
(1954)

Dull!
I'm adding reviews for films I've seen that lack one, so here goes...

Told from the point of view of the new wife of a District Commissioner who is new to the country; set during a period of drought which the local 'witch doctor' is blaming on the 'white man' and starting up a revolt; on the plus side it's thankfully short and has some glimpses of local Kenyan life, but other than decent photography, all aspects of it's making are of 'amateur' status. Poor!

I saw the 2016 'restored' version by Renown Pictures recently shown on Talking Pictures; so it's new availability may lead to someone posting a more positive review? There is also a question as to the running time the version I saw ran about 41 min', this ties in with the listing of the film in Monthly Film Bulletin (Aug-55), however on the BBFC it's listed at 61 min' and the version I saw looks truncated.

Alias Mr. Twilight
(1946)

Worth catching
I'm adding reviews for films that lack one, here goes.... 'Early Sturges film, grandfather is guardian to his 5 year old granddaughter, who he rearing with the help of a young nurse, his 'profession' is confidence trickster, at which he is talented; but things get complicated when the nurse starts dating a policeman. It's a mostly little known cast, apart from Lloyd Corrigan who is the standout as granddad, Gigi Perreau is rather to cute as his granddaughter; worth a look good film.'

Marriage of Convenience
(1960)

OK Edgar Wallace Mystery
I'm inserting reviews for films that currently lack one, so here is the note I made when I viewed this effort in 2009... 'E.Wallace thriller, this one has a man escape from prison on an outing, to a set up marriage, it passes an hour OK.' The good news is that there are more informative reviews on this title on IMDb, as this along with many of the E.Wallace series of films made in the UK late 50's/early 60's are listed, but as episodes of a TV series, as it was in this form that they were shown in the USA. I am transferring my viewing record from the TV listing, to the Film listing, as these titles were made and distributed as 2nd feature films in the UK. Possibly some clever person at IMDb can merge the records?

The Man Who Was Nobody
(1960)

Routine Edgar Wallace Mystery
I'm inserting reviews for titles that currently lack one, this is my note when I saw this back in 1985... 'So-so entry in the Edgar Wallace series from Merton Park, involving murder in Chelsea.' Note this title is also listed on IMDb under the Edgar Wallace TV series as it was shown in the USA, where there are more detailed reviews. Hopefully the records may be merged at some time.

When We Are Married
(1943)

Amusing comedy of manners.
i'm inserting reviews for films I'v seen that so far lack one, this is a rare chance to say something favorable, review.... From a J.B.Priestley play, this is a comedy of manners set in a small Yorkshire town circa 1900, when three leading bigwigs are informed that their marriages are void as the minister was not qualified, good. I'm a fan of director L.Comfort, and this is clearly a rare film, but I saw it in Sep 2011 when it was shown at the NFT in London.

Number One Gun
(1990)

Cheap 007 spoof.
I'm inserting reviews for films I've seen that lack one, I saw this on a DVD-r copy in 2010, it was a decent fullscreen 4x3 print that ran 89 min in PAL format, so slightly cut? Here is the note I made at the time... A very cheap '007' spoof from maverick Shonteff, only a curio, apparently no UK cert or release. So that and my low rating of 2/7 indicates that it's rather dull, rather than enjoyably naff, as might be hoped for. I'm a bit surprised that no one else has posted a review, as Shonteff has a bit of a cult following.

Dr. Satán
(1966)

Non Camp Mexican Horror!
I'm inserting reviews for all films that currently lack one, this is a rare opportunity for me to recommend something, review..... A non campy Mexican horror crime drama! Our title character is a devil worshiping Dr. who has developed a serum to turn people into the walking talking dead, he uses them to help a criminal organization pass counterfeit currency in Mexico City, then there are a couple of Interpol agents on his trail! It is a bit on the bonkers side, however it's stylishly made in a totally deadpan manner, and is fairly atmospheric in parts, recommended to anyone who may be at all interested. Good.

Hangman's Wharf
(1950)

Routine
I'm inserting reviews for films that currently lack one, this deserved rarity, not yet got 5 votes, has recently been shown on UK satellite channel Talking Pictures, where I saw it, so should become better known, note their 'restored' print is about 56 min' so is missing some 16 min' (ajusting for different cinema / TV frame rates) of the original, review.... 'Flimsy plot involving a doctor framed for murder and a female journalist, together they attempt to sort out what's happening, not helped by an average cast, and below average plot that's full of holes, but (in this version) it's short, and though mostly studio bound, there are a few interesting exteriors, some dockyard scenes, the Albert Memorial, and a West coast fishing village, watchable if you like old British films, otherwise avoid.'

Change Partners
(1965)

Routine
I'm inserting reviews for films I've seen that currently lack one, this is the 2nd such review I've added today for a routine entry in the E.Wallace series that I viewed in 2009, my note at the time was...''E.Wallace? Thriller a con man and his girlfriend are staking out a couple who get involved in adultery & murder, it passes an hour.''

The Main Chance
(1964)

Routine
i'm inserting reviews of those films I've seen that lack one, i have a fondness for old b&w British films, so am always on the look out for obscure examples such as this, I watched this in 2009, but can't recall it, here is the note I made at the time....''Routine little Merton Park thriller involving a Mr big of the criminal underworld hiring an ex RAF conman to fly some diamonds across the channel, OK.''

Lightning Bryce
(1919)

Mostly a chase, poor.
I'm inserting reviews for items I've seen that lack one... This is so far the only silent serial that I've seen, I like the serial format, and watched this as I do all serials, watching 1 episode a day. I'm not a western fan, I like some, John Ford, Budd Boetticher efforts, but not the run of the mill types, I'm waffling as IMDb insists on a certain length of review, and there is little I can think of to say about this effort, but here goes... Note the print quality I watched was fairly poor, the basic plot is a search for some Indian gold treasure, by our hero & heroine, which their fathers discovered, they wrote the location on a cloth that has to be wrapper round a Bowie knife, before dying at the hands of the Indians; There is also a villain out to get the gold for himself, the sound serials I saw have a plot that moves along, twisting and turning, this is mostly a chase depending on who has the clues at any given time, lots of horse riding, if you like that? The 'horror' element that intrigued me is simply a bit of remote viewing by the Indian mystic woman; It would be useful if someone who liked this could review it.

Old Mother Riley's Ghosts
(1941)

Sub-par OMR entry
I'm inserting reviews for films I've seen that so far lack one, this is my 2nd entry for a below par entry in the already low-par OMR series, here goes.... Another below par series entry, using the old favorite of the spy ring using a 'haunted' castle as cover. I saw a fairly reasonable copy of this in Nov '07, and I like the idea of crooks using a 'haunted' castle, as a plot devise, but not OMR films, this entry however scores lower than usual from me for an OMR film, possibly the 'ghosts' title raised my expectations too much? as with my previous OMR review, it would be good to get a review from someone who liked it. This line is here because IMDb insist on a little more verbiage, though I notice there are some very brief 'reviews' for some titles.

Old Mother Riley Overseas
(1943)

Sub-par OMR entry
I'm inserting reviews for films I've seen that lack one, review.... Weaker entry in the series, here the daughter gets kidnapped in Portugal by wine thieves. Not much of a review I'm afraid, but it's not much of a film, the copy I saw in Nov-'07 was soft, worn & cut to 73 min' I'm not certain if any good copies of this film survive, as it mine is only it's 9th vote here. It would be useful if a fan of the film / OMR series was to post a review, till then this is it. I need to pad as the above is insufficient waffle for IMDb to accept, so I will add that A,Lucan appeared on film on 17 occasions, always as OMR, and K.McShane made 16 appearances, as Kitty only absent in the final film, some 9 years and 5 films after this one.
