The Galloping Major
(1951)

enjoyable racehorse yarn - bit of an old chestnut!!
Interesting look at a bygone era of the early 50's in the London district of Lambs Green. But today we still love the GG's just like then. Some things never change. I was amazed at the way the bookies communicated with their colleagues in the stands (all line of sight). The film "dry rot" also showed them communicating odds with arm movements - fascinating, I've no idea what they were 'saying'. Seeing the old double decker buses brings back memories. They also had some real old buses that looked prewar as well. Lots of familiar British actors like Basil Radford playing the major and Joyce Grenville and Jimmy Hanley. Not a laugh out loud comedy more a comical drama post- Ealing production that apparently was based on an idea by the actor playing the Major. You can also catch sight of the 'Carry On' star Charles Hawtrey in a bit part. This film runs the gauntlet of emotions when bets of all sorts are involved. Just enjoy the ride and races.

Treasure Hunt
(1952)

Dated
Possible spoilers!! I found this a rather dull and very dated Irish/British comedy/satire set in a large ancestral Irish mansion. My wife found it amusingly eccentric. It was written as a stage play and its premise is that of an eccentric family living beyond their means. They have to take in PG's (paying guests). Half the family are in favor and the other half endeavour to sabotage's the money making scheme. There's love interests, a kooky aunt who may save the day and a hunt for treasure. Good natured and predictable, not memorable. Jimmy Edwards manages to blow on a few brass instruments which I believe is a bit of a trademark with him.

Fools Rush In
(1949)

don't rush to watch
Spoilers!!!!

I found this a dated farce with no laughs. A young woman decides not to walk down the isle on her wedding day. She still loves her fiancé but she meets her long lost father.

Fathers not the monster she was led to believe.

She questions what she wants.

Her mother questions what she wants.

Her mother's fiancé questions what he wants.

I found the characters annoying and not much point to the story.

The Man from Toronto
(1933)

a glimpse of life in 1933
A fairly simple and predictable love story vehicle for Jessie Matthews. I found it watchable as a slice of life in 1933. What it might have been like living in a village where everybody knew each others business and rumors spread like wild fire. I liked seeing a village parade complete with brass bands and floats. It was interesting to see manual phone exchanges with switch board operators connecting overseas calls and cars starting to gain a foothold. A bit of visual history with an agreeable story line.

Evensong
(1934)

Old time melodrama with some good singing
Old fashioned stolid yarn about sacrificing true love to chase the dream of singing on the world stage. Eventually the old diva knows in her heart she will be replaced by the young up and coming 'star'. Will she retire gracefully??. The new diva (Baba L'Etoile) sings beautifully and is a delight to listen too. Her real name is Conchita Supervia and she dies 4 years later in child birth.

Weird Ones
(1998)

Very amateurish feel.
Very strange movie. Is it a comedy or drama?, is it an adult or kids movie?. Its tedious, booring and not well acted ( I can't believe the actors could keep a straight face). I think the best thing is in the credits that give the locations of where the film was shot. I think this is a great idea, especially if its filmed in a city or location you know. I don't like to knock Aussie movies but the script could have been a lot better.

Delayed Action
(1954)

oldie but quite goodie
This movie starts off with an interesting premise. Its a sort of mystery, crime drama( Why would a man agree to be bumped of on time payment??). You wonder how its going to sort itself out. I found the acting a bit stilted. Overall quite watchable.

Go for a Take
(1972)

Not worth a double take
A booring, predictable chase and adventure film that features Reg Varney. On the run the two lads hid out in a film studio. By coincidence Generous Jim, the man who's after them arrives at the studio on other business. It could have been so much better. Lots of familiar British character actors of the 1970s.

Heat Wave
(1935)

Unusual
This is a dated, though in parts clever British musical comedy of the 1930s. I think Albert Burdon (who plays the dupe) is a model that Norman Wisdom used for some of his comedy demure and pratfalls. The action is centered around power intrigues in a bananna republic and the songs mostly have a latin beat. Harmless fun that gets better as the movie progresses.

The Camels Are Coming
(1934)

A bit dated now but watchable
Its all about searching for smugglers in Egypt. Jack Hulbert's comedy doesn't date too well, but this is a happy film that has some interesting old planes and aerial views of the pyramids. Jack singing 'everythings coming my way' is also fun.
