Expend4bles
(2023)

Good & fun action flix to watch with friends
Don't expect thick plot, stellar acts, heart wrenching performance or oscar worthy script, special effects/cgi etc from this movie. If you're an action fan like me, you will see that Expendables series about a group of veteran action stars deliver good action flick for their loyal fans. And their enemies are getting younger, now we have Tony Jaa, Iko Uwais and Dan Chupong. For me, it's like these veteran are opening the path for these new action stars

The best way to enjoy this movie is by going to cinema with your friends to have some fun together and leave your brain outside. Actually there are some good one liners. A friend commented that the good guys feels like some harmless, sociable but cynical old veteran while the villains is like those young and genius trigger-happy deserters who lust to kill and burn. In short, we have quite a good time in theater and have some fun discussion after that. Especially that love acene between Fox and Statham which look so fake.

John Wick: Chapter 4
(2023)

All the fighters are zombie.....
This movie has the same plot as before: John Wick against the rest of the assassin world with longer running time. What is good with a longer duration is the characters can be well developed, and I really like that Donnie Yen, Shamir Anderson, Hiroyuki Sanada and Scott Adkins have enough time to show their acting. Especially Donnie and Scott. Hiroyuki/Henry Sanada has seriously acted on several movies so he's natural.

Another benefit with longer duration is of course more actions! However, I'm a bit dissapointed about this, because it doesn't mean that to make it longer, those henchmen should be too hard too kill as if they were zombies which you need to punch, kick, throw, shot on the knee, leg, abdomen, chest and finally their head to finally died. For those troops with full body armor (in Continental hotel set) this is still logical. But for those thugs in Paris who were not use a bulletproof suits, this become silly. I don't understand why John Wick didnt try to break their neck or shot their heads to quickly eliminate them.

Not only those thugs are zombies, John Wick should also a zombie since he fell from 2nd/3rd floor several times, get stabbed, punched kicked, hit by car also several time, fall down and roll over on hundreds of steps and still can get up and seems fine.

And I totally loss it when there's a shooting duel, with one of the participant is blind!. I really want the movie to be finished asap.

However, as I said, the character development is nice and the gun-fu which are shot from above from room to room is also memorable. I quite enjoyed them. 7/10.

Mortal Kombat
(2021)

A decent reboot, a journey not a tournament
Judging from the previous MK movies, I set my expectation low, thinking only the duel between Scorpion and Sub-Zero will be fun to watch. I'm not entirely wrong, but other fights are quite OK.

Not like the previous MK installment, this movie is not about a tournament, but a journey for some of the character. It's open with a fight between Hanzo vs Bi Han, and we aware the final battle will be between them too. Then there' are stories about Jax, Sonya Blade and Cole Young becoming MK fighters. The main plot is about Cole Young's journey and it gives fresh angle about the MK universe. And I can say this plot can be developed more than just sime people gathered for a tournament. That's good.

I think sub-zero is the leading character/villain. I find all the characters here are better than the old MK, except Shang Tsung. He looks like an old chinese royal, not a warrior. Well actually Liu Kang is not better than before too, but he's more like a supporting role here.

My favorite characters here are Sub Zero and Sonya Blade. Sonya's plot to become a MK fighter is satisfying. I hope these two will join the next installment. I'm a bit worry about Kano, but his portrayal is ok. But overall I think the director and the script have given these characters good portions, it's only some actors deliver better than the other. The CGI and effects are also convincing. There's also a 'double team' (2 agains 1) fight just like in the game.

Now, I really want to see the next one. Hopefully with better budget. More martial arts actors involved. And the screen writers has no boundary about which characters will join the sequel. The beauty of this MK universe that you can revive any characters needed by the story with some logics.

I was prepare to give perhaps 4 - 6 score but after watching the movie it's a solid 7 out of 10. If you love the game, dont miss it.

Gangs of London
(2020)

Solid mob flick. Like a mixed of Quentin Tarantino and John Woo style.
First I would like to state that those who give bad score probably because this genre is not their cup of tea. Complaining about over the top action, lots of gore, unrealistic mob story, clearly you are in the wrong alley/department.

I dont know about gangs, but I know that Gareth grows up watching Hongkong's action movie. So I think the story here is like a solid chinese triad movie. It reminded me to some of Chow Yun Fat's movie (ie a Better Tomorrow 1 & 2, the Killer, the Bund) and Kill Bill. Therefore, like I said, it's kinda mix of Quentin and Woo style with Brit flavor. And If you replace all the casts with chinese actors then you get a blockbuster chinese movie.

The acting is ok, the story and plot twist is quite fine, and the action is superb. It's really a showcase of how good Gareth can do in action movie, given proper budget. And maybe it is his signature, but there always a gas tank explosion in his work.

My only complain, although Gareth has no trouble in killing the characters, I think he has problem in ending the story. I feel like he's ending the series because he's out of budget. The final episode is less satisfying.

Cursed
(2020)

Whitewash is not ok but blackwash is fine...?
The problem of this show is the casting. Sorry to say but I think some actors are miscast. I think if Maisie Williams plays Nimue, this show will be much much better. Also, how come king Arthur and Morgana are not white? I dont mind if he was mercenaries and she was a nun, I still can accept a mercenary become a king and a nun become a witch. But black people become a king of England? That is so hard to accept and really it's distracting. I know this just a show but how can I enjoy this show if everytime they appear, I was reminded that this only a show?

Those animations between scenes are also distracting and the CGI effects feel cheap. What I like id how various the Fea people and their make up effect.

Motherland: Fort Salem
(2020)

Fresh X-Witches show. Looking for S2
The story is fresh but not original. It's like X-Men which some mutants work with the govt while the others against it. Some 'super-humans' wants to live side by side with normal people, the others feel the world should belong to them. Fort Salem is like Xavier Institute and this is a story about new 'mutants' in the academy.

It's start slow but It builds its universe quite well with the three young witches as the center of the story. I love how the characters develops. Abigail bellweather starts as a royal class but then proved to be a worthy leader, friend and soldier. Tally, a naive and idealistic girl who become more realistic and grounded. And Raelle, a loner and broken girl who finds love and power in friendships. They start like they want to kill each other but end as they willing to die for another.

Of course nothing is perfect. This show feels less magical and more like - well - world of mutants. No another dimension, no phropecies, no magic creatures, warlock, demons and such. Perhaps there are a group of human whose are their enemy (the camarilla?) etc. And seems like it's a world dominated by women. But this also means that there are a lot of room for the story to expand.

What I didnt like is the LGBT stuff (not particularly this show). Why almost all teenagers show now has LGBTs explicit contents in them? I'm not against LGBT but please make it more subtle not so demonstrative.

Joker
(2019)

This is killer clown not Joker
Joaquin Phoenix may deserve an Oscar for his portrayal. This is a dark, insane movie which I gladly praise, but somehow I couldnt see this as a Joker's movie. I cant imagine such a weak and sick man become Joker. And this is not a DC superhero/villain movie.

And now DC has problem, cause if there's a Batman movie, this Joker persona may overshine Batman, but if you make Joker any less, the audience will be disappointed.

I think this is a psychological drama movie. Too heavy to be part of DC universe.

Wu Assassins
(2019)

The fights are good, others can be better.
Ok, I watch this because of Iko's fighting style. And he doesnt disappoint. But a lot of things can be improved, the visual effect for instance.

The 1st and 2nd episodes are a bit hard to watch, but it gets better after that. Iko's wooden acting as Kai Jin is improved a bit, the female cop is slightly better than Iko. Jenny and Tommy Wah is ok, and Lu Xin, I wonder why he's not playing Kai Jin. He certainly can act, can fight, and handsomely Chinese too. I know what to expect in a tv series like this, so I'm not being let down. Having said this, I think the music sucks and ruin the moment.

Star Trek Beyond
(2016)

A homage to the original
Just watched it last night. It's not as I've expected but in a good way. I mean, the 2 prequels are action movies with sci-fi background. This one is a sci-fi movie with good portion of action - just like the original series.

So yes, I didn't get the mind blowing, edgy, over the top actions performed by a super crew, but I got that 'deja vu' feeling since the characters are down to earth, their relationships are believable, their approach for the solution are 'old schools'(ie motor cycle, holographic shield, radio frequency etc) which Shatner's Kirk or Stewart's Picard may pull off in that situation. Strange that, while Justin Lin has turned the Fast n Furious franchise into somewhat a international spy action movie, he brings the Star Trek franchise back to the original.

However, it feels like there is a big part of the story missing. No explanation while these enemy become alien and how Krall can change his looks in the final chapter. The alien's motive is not convincing enough. Krall seems to be more sad and frustrated than angry and revengeful. The Jaylah vs Manas fight choreography is just so-so. Both actors has showed good fight resume in their previous film, so I was expecting more spectacular fight between these two. So 7 out of 10.

X-Men: Apocalypse
(2016)

Blame it to the Russo's
The movie starts with unrealistic CGI, for a ritual ground that has been used for thousand years, everything looks so fresh and brand new, with sort of high-tech equipment. It should be old and mystical. Then it follows with some gore actions which made my kids close their eyes. I beginning to think I made mistake by taking them to watch this movie. Thanks God that it become more kid-friendly throughout the time. While my kids have quite a good time, I think it's below my expectation.

Take the explosion that happens in the Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. It make my kids laughs, while I feel that scene is not suppose to be funny. And then we meet Wolverine and Col Stryker, which turns out they're just cameos. And then the action.

Perhaps I put my expectation about the action quite high, because they are Marvel's characters just like Captain America and friends. And Civil Wars has just released so it's unavoidable to compare both. Civil Wars is full of spectacular action, with heroes which not just rely only on their gift but primarily on their skills. While this X- Men movie, the actions have simple, uncreative choreography which just relying on their gifts. These heroes almost has no skill. Blame it to the Russo's whose made the final battle in this X-Men series looks like just some people trying to hit their opponent as hard as they can.

If I watched this movie alone, I may give lower score. That score above is because my kids still can enjoy it.

Captain America: Civil War
(2016)

Crouching Spider Hidden Panther
In short, this is an American Wuxia movie. Superheroes are similar to those martial art warriors in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon genre, who can leap over building, have superhuman strength, bend physical law etc. Each has his/her unique fighting style and weapons. And just like a wuxia movie, the plot is about love, friendship, revenge and betrayal.

Even you can relate some action scenes to Asia's martial arts movie, like when Cap is gunned down and fall from building to the ground, Jacky Chan's stunt has done that 'fall' before. The way Black Widow/Romanoff doing 'parkour' in the market, just like Donnie Yen did in "Bodyguards and Assassins" and so on. The Russo's brothers seem to be a martial art fans and it's good, they made the action scenes awesome by combining the grace of Asia/Hongkong's martial art and the explosive/spectacular of Hollywood's CGI and special effects.

However, I always see Captain America as the one who obeys the laws while Iron Man always breaks them, so throughout the movie I couldn't get rid the feeling that their roles in the story are mismatched. Another thing, while it's a superb action movie, it somehow lacks of emotional depth. Their motives are just rational. Therefore, Spiderman and Black Panther are able to steal the show, hence I put them on my title review. Really looking forward for their own films.

Perhaps for the next installment, the Russo's should also add spices of Korean drama to the mix :).

Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments
(2016)

Is this Clary Fray an antagonist or protagonist?
First, I didn't read the book. But if it's being filmed, perhaps the book is popular. So I went to theater and watched the movie. I'm not impressed about the movie. The setting is always dark, the fight choreography is actually nice but suffer from the dark environment and I hate this Clary Fray character. For a damsel in distress she was too bossy and annoyingly demanding to those people who willing to protect n help her at any cause. She suits an antagonist character.

I thought it was the actor's fault since normally the hero in any books/movies has a good character. But now, watching the series, I guess the Clary Fray character has a bad attitude (like her father maybe) and the actress who's portrayed that role in the movie is actually did a decent job. Better than the one in the series. When Jace, Alec n Isabel come to the scene, I thought Alec was Jace because he looks more similar to Jace in the movie, but I was wrong. However, after 3 episodes this 'Jace' still convincing enough. He doesn't look mysterious and dangerous enough. The chemistry isn't there either.

Considering that I don't like the first 3 episodes of CSI Cyber but I like the rest of them including the last season, I will try to watch several next episodes, hopefully it will be better. If not, well maybe it's not my cup of tea.

CSI: Cyber
(2015)

Not belong to CSI family, but worth to watch
Other CSI series work on physical crime scenes, so what happens if there are no physical crime scene location to work on? This where this series fills in. So it's not belong to CSI but complete them.

The 1st 3 episodes are not good. The acting, the pace, the camera works but it keeps getting better and I start to like it now. As an IT guy and gadgetholic, some of the tech stuff are a bit exaggerated, I think. But that happens almost in any show.

My only complain for this series, Simon Sifter (Peter McNicol) is an unnecessary character here. I didn't see why this show needs him. I prefer adds 1-2 experts on different area since cyberworld is not only about hacking. Pretty soon well be bored with hack games. Sorry for my English.

Serbuan maut 2: Berandal
(2014)

The Empire Strikes Back of Action Movie.
In my previous review of the Raid 1, I stated that it was like the Star Wars which make us see sci-fi movies in a new way. Now, after seeing the Raid 2 (three times actually), I can say that this sequel is just like 'Empire Strikes Back' since we go deeper into this Gareth's alternate universe of Jakarta's underground world with bigger scope, more impressive characters, more action, not only martial arts but also car chase, prison riot etc. So two thumb ups for Gareth and team.

My only complain about this movie, the story is a bit choppy, it feels like there are some scenes removed, which I don't see the point since this 150 mins movies flies so fast so additional 30 mins extra scene is still reasonable, combine with removing unnecessary plot (ie Prakoso's story).

The prison riot, the baseball bat man's fight, the car chase ad especially the final fight are making this movies worth watching several times. And definitely has raising the bar quite high, even I can't enjoy those full CGI movies anymore. Feels too much artificial.

And just like Empire Strikes Back to Star Wars, it is a great sequel and meet my expectation in any way possible. However, there are something on the 1st movies which stands out. I can't describe it well, but the 1st movies somehow feels more raw, genuine, a true masterpiece of modern martial art cinema.

Sorry for my broken English.

Elysium
(2013)

Another version of District 9
I watched this movie because of 3 names: Jodie Foster, Matt Damon and Neill Blomkamp. A strong actress, a good action actor and a promising director whose film (District 9) is quite a fresh take of sci-fi genre but somehow feels like a documentary, a bit flat. I was expecting this time, there wil be more emotion, more drama, more upz and downs like a roller coaster. But somehow, this was also feels the same like his previous movie.

Even the story is feel like just another version of District 9. Both about 2 separated colony. Then one colony wants to have a better future and invade the other and these movies have similar rhythm and tone. The difference is, the hero in District 9 is a cop protecting the invaded colony, this time our hero is 'the alien' invading the colony trying to save his life. I think the director has an obsession about 2 conflicting colony since he's from South Africa.

It's not the best act from Matt Damon and certainly Jodie Foster great talent in here is being wasted.

Man of Tai Chi
(2013)

Need better acting, but still quite good
Yuen Woo Ping as the fight choreographer, Keanu Reeves's first attempt as Director and who is Tiger Chen? So my expectation the movie will be like Hongkong martial art B-movie but have good fights in it. I'm only half right.

The scenario, the scenes, the score are quite effective and gripping (except when that lady announcer speaks and that unnecessary swimming scene) so Keanu did better than I expected and he got potential as a good visual story teller.

However, I think the 2 main characters (Keanu and Tiger) should act more convincingly since almost all supporting roles do their part well. And Keanu should give Donaka's role to another actor who can act and fight better while he focus on directing.

While the fights are quite good, I think someone like Yuen Woo Ping can do them better. It's between wuxia and 'street fight' and somehow feel staged. And after Tiger Chen meets Iko Uwais, the movie is going downhill. First, one of the choreography in the final fight clearly reminds me of "The Raid" - it's OK if this happens earlier but please not in finale. Moreover, the final fight is slower and more simpler hence less impressive than previous fight. If they use let's say Scott Adkins it may be 5 times better.

But still it delivers the message and philosophy clearly and still enjoyable so 6/10

World War Z
(2013)

Surprisingly Bad !
This is one of the film I was waiting for but after seeing it I come out the theater disgruntled. The trailer and the hype are very promising, the execution is fine but logic of the story and plot is a let down. It's like a cross between 'Outbreak' and 'Walking Dead' but there are some obvious illogical background I can not ignore.

The story starts when an outbreak of Zombie virus turn a city into a massive chaos. Gerald Lane and his family is there and after some series of lucky events they manage to save themselves on the roof of apartment. Then military helicopter specially sent to pick them Gerald Lane is sort of UN investigator (?), and deliver them to a US Nimitz class carrier which serves as US Army HQ. Then he unwillingly go to North Korea along with US SEAL team and a virologist to find the source of virus so his family can stay in the ship (how cruel...)

See, for me this background failed to provide Gerald Lane's rapport. I don't see why he is the perfect choice among probably tenth thousands of highly skilled and trained people in this ship. Simply he has to be in this team to save the world.

Then in North Korea he finds out more about these Zombie, that they are drawn by sounds, crushing their head is the only way to stop them but then we see a burned zombie who still has 2 fingers alive though his head is just ashes (?)

Next, he went to Israel which is the 1st country in the world who successfully anticipates this crisis but all this time the whole country (compare to a bunch of soldiers in North Korea) doesn't know that sounds make this Zombies go crazy (?). And when a zombie's bite turns normal person to zombies in just seconds, means the virus spreads very very quickly , if someone's hand is bitten, all you have to do is cut just inches above that hand to prevent this person become zombie (?) The virus should have spread to half of her body for god sake.

  • SPOILER ahead - After surviving a plane crash (yes now you know Gerald Lane is chosen probably because he's the luckiest person who can escape from anything), he concludes that the virus only attracted to healthy people. They ignore people who's terminally ill. Gosh. I can't take this anymore. I mean there are a lot, probably millions of terminally ill people compare to billions of people in earth and not a single one of them can inform this simple fact to any government in the world? Where are they? - SPOILER Ends -

So, I really disappointed with this movie. I still give '3' since the acting is decent and the special effect is quite good. But the rest is surprisingly bad.

Furious 6
(2013)

Exaggerated Villains....
First of all, this movie is quite awesome, but not as good as Fast 5 which IMO is the best of all FF franchise. The plot is more simple with a predictable twist in the end. The story also serves for wrapping up all the FF series for a grand finale in FF7 so it loads with lots character and effort to tie those loose ends (but not convincing enough) in previous sequel and rearrange the series in order so we can see now that FF3 is actually the FF6. So no wonder, there are some unnecessary scenes (ie Connor meets Braga in jail) which make less portion of actions scenes.

The FF team become more solid in this sequel, everyone has a good portion to show their character and role in the movie. I think Han & Gisele relationship here somehow is more subtle & memorable than "it'a all about family" excuses that Dom and others bragging about throughout the film.

However, the villain team is under my expectation. They are not as Hobbs, Braga or others picture them to be. They don't look scary, mean or dangerous to me, they just look tense and a bit nervous, except Shaw and that big Russian guy. While Shaw indeed is a cool and thinker mastermind, it's hard to believe that he is as powerful as Braga said. He doesn't have that powerful and dominant charm/aura.

So 7 out of 10 from me.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation
(2013)

Cheesy and Average Joe
In the first installment, GI Joe is a group of super soldier fight super mercenaries. This 2nd installment, it's about a bunch of soldiers trying to save the world and USA President. What makes these soldiers special? Actually almost nothing. Everything seems so simple, the plot, the dialogue, even I find the ninja revenging his master' plot is hard to believe and after the credit rolls, makes me wonder why we need a special forces named GI Joe or another prequel/sequel for this franchise.

OK, I don't mean all are bad, The ninja's fight in the mountain is cool, but the rest well, just OK. I mean, the action supposed to be getting more complex, more awesome towards the end of the movie, but that didn't happen with this movie. So I score it 6, since it's just a mindless action entertainment.

I left the theater, feel a bit entertained but nothing from this movie stuck in my head. Sorry for my English.

Pitch Perfect
(2012)

The Pitch is quite perfect but the story is plain and boring...
Watched this movie last week, it's not a musical but a movie about transformation of Barden's Bella acapella team. This movie actually has the potential, all the girls has their own background which means there are several side stories which could make it more interesting, ie about Aubrey, why she throws up when she stress, the sex-maniac Stacie, or about Fat Amy, a fat girl but seems very popular among handsome men. But it's focus on Beca's life which I think it's just plain and dull. This make the scenes between those fine acapella composition passable.

The acapella compositions on the final are good but it's not as exciting as the riff-off scene.

Person of Interest
(2011)

Simple premise, endless possibility, great show.
It's about 2 guys with different expertise developing a case from just social security number and they have to prevent or solve any crime happen in a very little time.

That's a simple premise. But it has almost endless possibility of twist and turn. These 2 guys are very secretive which could provide many layers of their background to unveil, the tip comes from a government top machine which could lead to lots of possible conspiracy scenarios, the social security number leads to any person's life, from ordinary people to important people, from family's matter to international, from simple crime to highly organized crimes etc, so this series has potential to become one of the longest TV show. If, the execution is right.

Talking about execution, I think so far (I have watched about 20 episodes of season 1) the crew is able to give a great show. This is the most waited TV show for me nowadays. The acting of lead and supporting actors are believable, the action has movie quality, the surveillance system on action which used for in-between scene, flashback or observing live events makes me feel the machine's presence, how this intelligent non-organic entities always watch these 2 guys in their action. The scenario which provide mysteries slowly reveals itself, the twist and turns, everything is engaging and keeps me interested throughout the show.

I have only minor complaint, While Reese, Finch, Fusco are people with defective personality and easily rooted (even their enemies), the Detective Joss Carter (Taraji P Henson) is portrayed here somehow as an ideal person which giving the feeling that she should not be in this show. And sometimes the dialog feel a bit cheesy.

I hope this show always get good rating and made into lots of episodes/seasons.

Tai ji 1: Cong ling kai shi
(2012)

Nice, but could be better
Watching this movie reminded me to Bunraku, or Scott Pilgrim where there are comic elements fused in, but better. After a while I lost interest in watching Bunraku or Scott Pilgrim, they became boring and dull while Tai Chi 0 still has lots of things to offer till the end.

This is the 1st Stephen Fung's movie that I watched and he surely does a good jobs. The fight choreography by Sammo Hung, visual (and comical)& sound effects, scores, some camera works, the acting from Tony Leung and Angelababy (gosh, she's so fresh n pretty) are the good part of this movie.

However, the acting of both leading male and that British woman are wooden, even the village people give better performance. While Angelababy delivers decent acting but her moves as a fighter is not convincing. The pace drags a bit in the middle of the movie, the camera work inside that giant machine are dull/not creative, the story is quite thin - without any elements add in, it may only make half of a movie. I should give '8' to this movie, but considering these lacks, I can only give 6.

Kudos especially to Stephen Fung and Sammo Hung, which from this poor script and resources still can make an enjoyable flick. And I still want to see the sequel "Tai Chi Hero", hopefully it will be better.

Total Recall
(2012)

Total....ly Different
I expect a "Total Recall" remake but this film is (almost) totally different. The only thing that links both is the Rekall services but it ends also in a different way. So this is actually a different film which based on the same short story. The title is just a marketing trick to lure people into the cinema.

The film itself as an action film is not a let down, if you don't constantly looking for any homage to the original. Yes, there are some homage, probably put there so they could use the hype. I always love Kate and Jessica, seeing them fight giving more pleasure than the Expendables and I wish both get more action and drama, not just as supporting role. I'll be very happy if Selene, the vampire from Underworld series meet Abigail Whistler, the female archer from the Blade series. Especially Kate, she knows how to look good when doing action. Unfortunately Jessica doesn't have the same chance in her role. They even outshine Collin Farrel who IMO is not convincing as Quaid here.

One of the advantage of his role as an amnesia secret agent, while he could kill all his opponents in very creative way, he could also show feelings, become dramatic and fragile just like ordinary person. Colin here just shows how surprise he was when first finding out his hidden skill, But that's all. No regrets for killing lots of people, no fears, no shocked, nothing. I failed to connect with his role.

In the end, you get a good and fun action movie which happens to have the same title with one of Arnold's movie. 7/10

When going home, I can't stop thinking that what if Kate plays Quaid/Hauser similar to how Jolie play her role in "Salt" and she killed Collin in the similar way Arnold did to Sharon Stone. And Jessica is her nemesis who wants revenge because Hauser kill her family. Then everything else loosely stick to the original. I think that could be a better "Total Recall" remake.

Skyfall
(2012)

My Name is Bourne.....Jason Bourne
What makes Bond's series so special? In my opinion, because they have the best villains who want to rules the world, conquer some countries, killing million of people just for their breakfast, girls who have rare qualities not just some bimbos, highly advanced technologies which may hit the market pretty soon, unlimited support from MI6 even some helps from CIA, Interpol, government, military etc around the world, even in the isolated area and any other 'over the top' things we could imagine. Yes, these aren't real, but we get that picture long ago. So by stripping those and replace Craig with Damon will make Skyfall another Bourne movie. And somehow the grand Bond's theme we normally get in the beginning and the end of the movie sounds well..too grand.

Now, apart from that, this movie actually pretty decent as an action movie. The story, acting, action scenes, etc are quite gripping. The first 20 mins of this movie will immediately put you right in the middle of the story and you don't want to miss it till the end.

There are some plot holes. I guess, when people make a movie as real as they can, the plot holes also became easier to see. For example, when the villains in police uniform are after M, Bond already warned her, but the security in that building is quite loose and those villains infiltrate the building with less resistance. In fact, the villains practically do their plan so smooth almost like getting candy from a baby. While Bond's team struggle to keep up. I'm also wonder why MI6 seems has no support from their own government, police, military etc, while the bad guy could easily get police car, military chopper etc.

So, while the movie is quite good, I can only score it 7 for not being a true Bond movie. I hope the next one could be better, if it's just become a follower of Bourne's series, well the Bond's era will be gone.

The Expendables 2
(2012)

Lower your expectation, almost become a B-movie action parody
After watching the 1st expendables, I have a mixed but positive feeling about the series. Seeing these heroes from my past doing actions altogether is kind of reliving and refreshing their hypes and legends. I can say The Expendables is a good action movie and while it satisfies me in a certain level (not to the max), it delivers and makes me hungry for more, at least a trilogy.

So I came to theater with high expectation and sadly, the Expendables 2 is quite a disappointment for me. Somehow, it feels like a B-movie action comedy parody. Some scenes are suppose to be awesome but turn into cheesy ones instead. For example, when Van Damme killed one of the good guys, he made Adkins hold a dagger in front of that guy chest and then doing a turning kick........So? do we supposed to see it in disbelief or say "Wow?"

When Sly's (almost) full team is ambushed and cornered, someone secretly helped them by wipe out all their enemies, blowing up a tank/heavy artillery in just seconds, and then he (an action legend) show up (famous whistle from cowboy movies plays in background) while Sly's said "Don't freak...don't freak" - carrying only a semi automatic rifle..(???) I admit it's a funny scenes but quite a parody. Then, almost in the end of the movie, all of those action legend are showing up - I know they're up to something - and yes, everyone of them get a healthy dose of shooting weapons and killing enemies. Those poor bad dudes are nowhere to be found in the previous part of the film and probably are there in the last part so everyone in good guy team can contribute about 50 kills/each.

I'm expecting more duel than Expendables, but in here, there are only two duel and one of them is not worth to mention, I look for more hand to hand combat than the 1st series which both side are hurt, torn apart but in the same time they grow respect for each other skills. But it's just a plain nasty bad guys vs cool hero stuff, both throwing bullets I expect...well a lot of things but undelivered except seeing those legends and remembering how they have entertained me in the past. And I don't think I'll be excited for the 3rd installment now. And strangely, Jet Lee give better impact on me in his limited screen time than that Chinese girl who replaces him throughout the film.

So, if you want to watch this and still enjoy it, you should lowered your expectation. It's not like the 1st installment. Sorry for my English (4/10)
