Black and Blue
(2019)

Better than expected.
Read a synopsis for this movie and thought oh just an other Cop show and was pleasantly surprised, our lead character played by Naomie Harris was quite good and backed up by Tyrese Gibson as a reluctant helper. What I liked about this movie was it maintained a believable story line but best of all there was a constant tension after about 15 minutes into it and right up to the end of the movie. Black and Blue is quite watchable especially if you like Cop movies with corrupt cops as the plot line, I gave it a seven (7) as it was much better than a lot of the B grade rubbish on offer these days.

The Kitchen
(2019)

This is Watchable for a Gangster Movie
I am amazed at the low reviews for "The Kitchen" it's a Clich'e but did the bad reviewers watch the same movie as me? Firstly not a big fan of Melissa McCarthy after some of her recent movies however the story line attracted my attention of three women taking over their husbands protection racket after the go to goal for 3 or so years. Once the Ladies get it all under control the neighbourhood gets cleaned up and all the shopkeepers are happy even an adjoing Mob want to make deals with them.Problems arise in the third half of the movie when the husbands get out of prison. Its not a comedy or serious drama definatly no Sopranos to be seen and not Oscar material however it is entertaing all the Actors played their parts ok,the story line is ok more could have been done with it. Melissa McCarthy has redeemed herself a bit in this movie for me and always enjoy seeing Elizabeth Moss in anything.Worth a watch even if your not a gangster genre Fan,gave it a rating of 8,just to help it along I hope.

Carnival Row
(2019)

Outstanding..... Hurry Bring on Season 2
We love a good Detective show however did not know what to expect from Carnival Row and it took us by surprise, Its got everything covered - Murder Mystery, Fairies, Fantasy,Monster, Love Story etc. and of course some tasteful sex scenes and filmed In A dark Moody Victorian Era setting. Orlando Bloom was excellent as the troubled Detective, Cara Delevingne as the love interest (First time I had seen her ) The rest of the cast all great characters. This may not be a series for every one but worth pointing out you have nothing to compare it to in the past, The First Episode may seem a little slow, stay with it by the end of the second one you will be hooked. We gave it a 9/10. Worth mentioning my wife and I are both in our early 70,s so it is a series for 18+ years of age.

Fifty Shades Darker
(2017)

Really!! Such bad reviews? Come on its not all that bad.
My wife and I only just got to watch 50 Shades Darker tonight and yes its possibly not Oscar winning material however we did enjoy it for its entertainment value. The " Control Power" of Christens character is not as forceful as in the first story which balances both of the characters for this particular story, for the ladies there is a Love story and for everyone a modest amout of Erotica in my opinion. I dont understand why this film attracted so many bad ratings,We gave it a 7/10 because it deserves better than the current 4.6 - some people dont look deep enough into the story. As a point of interest my wife and I are both 72 years old and def not exponents of BDSM just in case any one was wondering.

Mad Dogs
(2015)

SPOILER ALERT: They have to be kidding.
After watching the first episode in full found myself not wanting to watch any more of this current series. I can never understand why when American TV studios decide to "Remake" an already good quality British production such as "Mad Dogs" how so much of the original gets lost in the new production. This has been done so many times in recent years and I have yet to see a better than the British production produced in a series yet.The Brits just seem to have a knack for creating good mystery and comedy. WARNING!! NO RACIST INTENTIONS EXPRESSED IN THE NEXT SENTENCE OK! (Examples) so we have our four friends off on an adventure to their old school buddies hideaway in "Belize" which I find was actually Puerto Rico and of course we need to be politically correct and one friend has to be non White (Why ?) and further on the rather noisy sex scene we have to have a female who was local and of course non white which says something for the thinking behind that idea that white women can't appear Raunchy and drunk and want a good time really? Gave up on one episode if you have not seen the original English series from 2011 but like the concept go check it out as I give it a 9/10 compared to this remake 4/10. NB: I am seventh generation Australian and have ancestors of many nationalities.....so don't waste you time on hate remarks.

Transcendence
(2014)

What a concept, we were entertained.
Like some other reviewers I am stunned at the low rating of this excellent film, It would seem that many may not have understood what was trying to be achieved with the story after all it is visual entertainment with a thought provoking concept, what more could you want in a movie. Sure you could find a few flaws here and there so what movie is perfect? The main cast did as much as the script would allow keeping in mind we are mainly focused on the computer "Entity" therefore the cast did not have to do any more than what was offered. I gave this a 9/10 because the film delivered good entertainment given the concept of the story and a bit of a thriller feel towards the end, after all what else do you want from a film, I should add no Sex and no graphic violence....

The Giver
(2014)

Great Concept Story - Gives you much to think about.
My wife and I (Baby Boomers) watched "The Giver" a day ago and will watch it again soon as we liked the concept so much. We had never heard of the Author Lois Lowry or any or the books in the four part series however we were certainly surprised by the concept of the story and of the possibilities for mankind.

Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep gave a performance of what you would expect from them and all the supporting actors produced performances to keep the movie going in "What is going to happen next" kind of way,we felt entertained for 97 minutes and had our minds provoked into thinking of what the future might hold for humanity.

"The Giver" is not a film for everyone as it offers a different style of visual effect and is not a full on Action movie however if you like Futuristic concepts you will enjoy it.

On The Plus Side: No Sex, No Gratuitous Violence and no Horror, take a 10 year old plus to watch it without hesitation. On the Minus Side: We did feel by the end of the movie the story was rushed a bit, which is why We need a second viewing.

I gave this film an 8/10 for its concept and entertainment value, as a guide if you liked Logan's Run (1976) OrDivergent (2014) you will enjoy "The Giver" and we hope the movie makers continue with the remaining three stories.

The Wolverine
(2013)

Best Wolverine Yet!! Say I.....
Am amazed at the current IMDb rating of 6.9,the Wolverine fans must be on vacation. I have never read any comics or books on the "Marvel Superheros" I am from the "Older" generation of Superman and Batman & Robin days Pre 1970's,having said that I really enjoy a good action film with a reasonable storyline and fair quality acting,I am pleased to say The Wolverine delivered all that for me and a bit more especially some of the location shots which were excellent along with the "Fight" scenes. Sure some will find a flaw here and there with the production/acting/character's, but hey people it's a superhero movie go watch our Hero get beaten then recover and beat hell out of the "Bad" guys and sometimes get the girl. Hugh Jackman delivered as usual - other standout's for me were Rila Fukushima(The Body Guard)and Svetlana Khodchenkova (Viper) I have a feeling some smart producer/director will pick up these two ladies in the future.Gave this 8/10 now go watch THE Wolverine to see if he gets the "Girl" at the end.........

Power Games: The Packer-Murdoch Story
(2013)

Top QUALITY TV Drama at its best-Story based on real events.....
Just had the privilege to watch this great piece of Australian television drama and what a great job done by all the cast I could not find any flaws in the acting whatsoever.Having lived through the era from the 1950's to now (2013) and knowing of these larger than life characters which in many ways are part of Australian history I was so impressed with this production, such praise from me is unusual as many regard me as quite harsh on Australian produced shows' ,this is the exception as my fist ever score of a 9 stars for a TV series reflects........like good stories that are Real? Then go watch >>> Power Games.......

Byzantium
(2012)

For Fans Of good storytelling - Not For Dracula Fans
Really enjoyed this film although I was a bit lost for the first half hour or so as I was expecting something quite different than this film delivered however as the "Story" unfolds at a fairly slow pace you feel quite drawn to the two leading characters "Eleanor and Clara" and at this time I would like to mention I was quite impressed with the acting of these two ladies Saoirse Ronan and Gemma Arterton as compared to other films I have seen them in. This film is not easily compared to anything else that I can think of as it is not Quite a Horror film or really a Vampire film, but the thing I found I kept forgetting it was Just A Story and not "Real" as the film was very well presented in the quality of the acting and filming techniques gave it "Reality" feel. I am avoiding too much of the Detail as I believe you are better off not knowing too much about it, if you like a good quality film with a good story line that is not quite about Vampires. For those that may have the usual questions, the "Blood and Guts" are very minimal as is vision of any nudity. My best description is that it is a Love story of a parent for a child.I gave this an 8 as I feel it is a better film than the current rating suggests.......

Hummingbird
(2013)

Jason Statham Shines as a serious Actor
Just finished watching "Redemption"/Hummingbird" and was most impressed with this movie as entertainment,I knew nothing about it except my favorite"Action Man"Jason Statham was in it so that was enough to gain my interest and I was not disappointed however it was a movie not in the usual style I expected of Jason Statham, after I got past the first fifteen minutes started to seriously get into the story. I won't go on with with all the details of the Plot,if you have taken the trouble to read my review you will know that information. This is a movie for anyone who enjoys good Drama/action with a small hint of romance and revenge also some redemption thrown in almost at the end, there I think I covered it all,was also impressed with Agata Buzek a new actress to me who is now on my Radar, her character of "Cristina" the Nun was very believable.I gave this film a seven because I enjoyed and was entertained which is why one goes to the movies.......

Beautiful Creatures
(2013)

Nothing Entertains Like some Magic and Romance
Watched Beautiful Creatures (2013)with my wife last night and was thoroughly entertained by a marvelous piece of film making that included a blend of young and not so young very fine Actors, sure I don't see this film picking up any "Oscars" however as someone who had not heard of the books and stumbled on the Movie almost by accident we enjoyed this film a great deal,it is always a pleasure to hear that wonderful voice of Jeremy Irons and watch the quirky Emma Thompson, we were also impressed with the younger set IE;Alden Ehrenreich who played a good solid role as our romantic male lead furthermore was also impressed by Alice Englert as our female lead I had not knowingly seen her perform before and was interested to find that she is the daughter of Jane Campion the very fine New Zealand Director sign of good genetics I think.Back to the Film, the basic story was good, the new girl(Alice Englert) at school keeps her distance because of a secret and our Male lead (Alden Ehrenreich)is the romantic forbidden fruit for her, throw in some Magic,a couple of odd rellies and a great interior design job on the "Old Family Mansion" coupled with a great soundtrack by "Thenewno2" and you have a nice entertaining movie with no Bad Language or naked sex scenes and an ending which was OK but might also give you a question.I am surprised a the current IMDb Rating of 6 I believe this was closer to a seven for me and does not deserved to be compared to the Twilight series,in my opinion "Beautiful Creatures" was a better film to watch than some of Twilight films...

Jack Reacher
(2012)

Good old Fashioned Action-Conspiracy
I run a bit HOT and Cold with some of Tom Cruise's movies in recent years however I thought he was a good fit for this movie which is basically an action film. Tom Cruise may not be everyone's favorite movie star, but he still manages a presence in this Conspiracy/Action Movie and a couple of comedy moment's,if you have not seen this movie yet, look for the "Bathtub" scene and the "The Baseball Cap" (No Spoiler intended) For the most part it was a little bit like X-Files,"Trust No One" as far as the Conspiracy aspect is concerned. Towards last quarter of the movie dialog from Tom Cruise was reminding me of Liam Neeson in the "Taken" movies and any moment I expected him to say "I will find you and hunt you down",the plot had a familiar feel about it EG: We have the culprit and it's a open and shut case or is it? Enter Jack Reacher, then get the popcorn, get ready for the ride. If you are a fan of Action-Conspiracy-Murder Mysteries and most of all car chase scene's you will enjoy this film,I liked it enough and gave it a worthy seven. For the girls You have Tom Cruise with no Shirt on in one scene and for the boys you have the sharp dialog of the very attractive Rosamund Pike, does she take her shirt off? watch Jack Reacher to find out.

Silent Hill: Revelation
(2012)

Better Than a lot of recent Horror/Screamer Sequels.....
Had the chance to view Silent Hill: Revelation 2012 recently, by a coincidence had watched the original 2006 on DVD a few days before and I am surprised at the current rating which is below the first movie.

Although I am not a big fan of Horror/Screamer Genre movies I have a few exceptions in my "Like" list.We did not see the 3D version and I am not sure I wanted to anyway.

I have no complaint with the story-line as it neatly followed from the 2006 film and the characters played by Adelaide Clemens (Heather,)Sean Bean(Harry) and Radha Mitchell (Rose) were all believable considering the genre of movie, after all you don't expect this type of film to be "Oscar"material.Nice cameo of Malcolm McDowell about halfway through and did a great job in the "Scare" department.

If you are a fan of the first film, you should not be disappointed as you end with a "Closure" of sorts.I did think the Budget must have been a bit lighter than the first movie, however we were happy to pay the admission and felt we had our moneys worth including popcorn, Gave this a Seven (7)for entertainment value and based on a lot of other not so good or "B" grade horror flicks of recent times...

The Wedding Video
(2012)

What a lot of fun-best wedding movie in the past ten years
Just watched The Wedding Video with my wife,She protested "Not another Wedding Movie"!,two hours later she was still laughing with me about this film,it won't win any academy awards or golden globes, characters do not look as though they are acting due to the semi "Doc'o" style of filming however the three main characters consisting of our Bride,Groom and Best Man with special mention of the the Brides mother and Grandmother made this film a laugh a minute, well maybe every two minutes. I don't know why some review's were so harsh,it is what it is,a mad movie about weddings and the loss of control by the "Couple To Be" the typical Mother outdoing her society friends and the Wedding Planner going out of her mind plus the best man (Also the Brother of the Groom)adding to the chaos. I liked the Doco style which reminded me of an Australian film "Kenny" a few years back, the acting was OK and worked well with the dialogue.

We did not want our money back after watching this film compared to a lot of the contrived American rubbish on offer in recent time,The English have a great knack for comedy and I give this a 8/10 for laughs.

Lincoln
(2012)

Lincoln-Did not quite do it for me...
I found this hard work at first in trying to understand what was going on, apparently this film is a bit like its namesake,"Stalls" a bit here and there - however for any history Buff of American politics it would be of great interest. The use of the language of the time was a pleasure to hear, unfortunately it would be lost on most ears today I fear. Lincoln was a feast of quality acting but was done in a style that many might not enjoy. I expected a different kind movie in terms of the time span of his life and did find a few boring bits here and there having said that Daniel Day Lewis "WAS" Lincoln and all the other supporting actors did a great job.

Gave this a 7/10 because I personally did not overly enjoy the film (too many closed room scenes), but anything less would be an insult to effort involved in making this film.
