The Rise of Duton Lang
(1955)

It was called Cartoon Modern.....
A glorious age of animation and general cartooning where modern art philosophy merged with mainstream commercial and entertainment art design giving us some of the most thoughtfully drawn cartoons ever made. The animation styles and figuratism in these works were so good you'd never notice the lack of animation unless you were just obsessed with old 'circle based' style of cartoons which pioneers of this style were desperate to break free from. The only awful thing to come out of this style are todays outliney cartoons which are a horrid bastardization of modern design.

With that said, this was a wonderful little short that tells a fun but cautionary tale quite amusingly well. It's a shame some UPA shorts like this are so hard to find around online. UPA won't release most of these officially, but have no problem sending out takedown notices on youtube. If you can, please do try and at least find some collection that includes this short. It's a wonderful work as was nearly everything UPA was doing back then.

Hunger
(1974)

Absolutely Stunning Piece Of Animation but.......
I see I took this film a little bit more light-hearted than some of the other reviewers it seems. I used to always to see this movie in the tv guide on the Starz Encore network. I always wanted to watch it because I was just so curious about what this film was but I never could watch it because it always aired only on sundays at 5 am, it was always that day and time. Finally curiousity drove me so insane I *gasp* tried to figure out how to program my vcr, when I failed miserably I just started taping at 3 am and hoped for the best. I didn't get to watch what I had taped until I got home from school the next day and boy was it worth pretty much wasting a blank tape! This film totally blew my mind, I've always loved those weird indy foreign cartoons, especially the 70's ones. This movie not only had some of the most visually pleasing effects, it also had some of the best music I've ever heard. The overall tone of the film did seem to be an attempt to point out how wrong and selfish gluttony is and that last scene pretty much showed just how wrong he thought it really is, but the music, effects, and overall mood and atmosphere the film puts you in is too amazing and totally drowns out whatever political message this creator wanted to get out. Even the simplest things in this film, like the chewing and walking scenes just totally blow you away and burn in your memory for life. This is an all around wonderful film, a must see for any animation fan.

Boohbah
(2003)

Great Stuff!
This show is pretty great. When I first saw it I caught the ending and when I first saw those things, I was just dumbfounded. They are kinda creepy looking, but at the same time oddly cute. I really like the funny way their eyes shift, especially when they do it together in sync. Supposedly this is an exercise show for babies, it's more like an acid trip for kids and adults! I can't imagine any kid doing the stuff the boohbahs or those kids in the show do. Another cool thing about this show is these great segments featuring this odd family. There's Grandma, Granpapa, Auntie, Ms. Lady, Mr. Man, Brother and Sister, and little dog Fido. I really, really love these segments because not only are they also oddly entertaining and totally unpredictable, they also teach children a strong message that color isn't important. There is one problem though, I really don't like the segments that feature real kids at all. From what I've seen, this looks like some kind of cheap localization gimmick PBS added to the show when they got it from the original UK creators. I'd much rather see more of the Boohbahs interacting and learning in their free time than seeing those segments. The kids seemed to be pretty unamused too as we often turn when those parts start. One other complaint is I really miss that motherly voice from the Teletubbies, I think they should bring that voice actress back, those kid screams are pretty obnoxious.

All in all, this is one great show, at least the first 20 mins at least.

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
(2001)

Somewhat poor, but has massive potential.
This movie is both a disappointment and a bit of a hilarious joy. This movie starts out very funny and entertaining and from the start you see many classic reappearances, like the athletic trainer who is now a cop. If this movie would have focused more on Jay and Silent Bob's real personal lives and their common dwellings in their small town this movie would have very much rivaled Friday which is one of the best urban comedies of all time. From what you can see from most of this movie it seems like this is mainly a look back at all of Kevin Smith's creations of characters and ideas, along with his hilarious views on other classic icons of pop culture like Scooby Doo and Star Wars. As intelligent and witty as Kevin Smith is, he has a very funny "wise ass" tone to his films constantly making fun of other bad films and always pointing out constant lame cliches in the film industry yet this film imbodies one of the worst of all. The plots main cliche is the same old 'two buddies stumble and bumble throughout the country , then buddies accidently do something stupid, then the stupid thing they did becomes a huge misconception and now they are on tv and the police and fbi want them, then finally in the end everything gets cleared up and both or one of the buddies gets the girl, and everything is supposed to be ok', geez that was disappointing!

As soon as I noticed the way the plot shifted to a road movie I got a little bored, but I was still very much entertained. The road trip had many dull unfunny parts and also there was a ton of celebs crammed into the movie who were hilarious sometimes, and made you want to fast forward your player at other times. I hope Kevin Smith ignores the bad reviews and gives Jay and Silent Bob another chance, but this time make the film about the real drug dealing J&SB and focus on their hilarious "free cheese sandwich" eating life style rather than a phony, adventurous, travel the world, type of one. Hopefully Clerks 2 will come to light and we will get more of the real J&SB and not the phony "merchandise" junk selling ones from the cartoon series either.

Lie Down with Dogs
(1995)

Great Film
Alot of people are homophobic and I think they just only saw this as a "gay" film. I liked it alot and I thought alot of things in this film were very funny and interesting. After I saw this I had a much better understanding of gay people. The acting was ok and everyone in the film was very believable because gays love to have fun as even the most homophobic person knows. I still wonder what ever happened to the main Wally White. I checked his profile and I only saw this film, he's a really talented writer and actor and I hope to see him in some upcoming projects.
