Narcopolis
(2015)

after watching this "sleeper" i now suffer from narcolepsy!
Drugs and time travel - that's like ham and eggs right? Can't have one without the other correct? a perfect marriage

True but after watching this mess, even a liter of black coffee couldn't keep me from dozing off to slumber city in parallel universe

Narcopolis ( "Narcopolice"? ) just loses itself in trying to tie too many loose ends that seem to be caught in a vortex of bad Sy Fy writing where no hack has gone beyond.

Hate being hard on a movie - regardless of budget, it is still someone's creative sweat equity - but this is a real stinker

But if you are suffering from insomnia...this might be the right drug for ya.

The Killing Jar
(2010)

Whatever ya do lads, try the pecan pie...it's the best in town!
I had no idea what to expect. correction - i expected the usual Madsen gore and gratuitous killing but not such a multilevel plot line with tight dialogue and intense suspense. No bikers, no vampires, no T&A fest but simply some old school close quarters mano to mano acting

And amazingly done with an ensemble of road weary B actors who actually deliver in every scene - a triumph for small cinema shot on a Diner budget!

very powerful, tension filled double hand grip on edge of your seat claustrophobia gnawing at you, the voyeur, peering into this killing jar while a cold sharp scalpel slowly twists and turns into your gut keeping ya from catching your breath.

Outlaw
(2007)

**SPOILER ALERT** ..the leading man in this movie dies
..but you already knew that because that's the way it plays in all of Sean's movies

OK...it wasn't as bad as some say but certainly not as good as others opined. Let's just say it could have been better. Some good patches but rough and uneven most of the film.

Script was weak tea despite a good core of actors. although it's not a real "vigilante" movie like a ultra violent Hollywood blood spilling satanic ritual gore fest, there should have been more character development to fill the monotonous and dumb down dialogue exchange between the lads.

a 5.5 but with more effort, easily could have jumped up to a 7.0

Arrow
(2012)

good pilot but then...
Okay i realize this show is gearing itself for the demographics of 15-23 with anyone older probably still living at home with parents (coincidentally like our "hero" Oliver Queen. The pilot was really promising but the subsequent shows are mediocre at best.

Some irritants: 1. i swear there must be 3-4 "i'm sorry but i was wrong" maudlin moments in each episode. It's pathetic and lame. 2. His sister is annoying = personality wise, that dreadful whinny voice. Have more vertigo will ya sweetie? 3. The characters & dialogue = including the villains - are out of central casting of the 90210 abandoned lot 4/ The hero in every episode is always doing some workout routine shirtless. Okay. The kid is in shape but we get it already! 5. Another rich kid super hero. Oh how original! Living in a mansion that he probably leased from Bruce Wayne.

My favorite and most anticipated moments in the show are the flashbacks to the island where Oliver was marooned on for 5 years. It's got a "lost" feel to it and it keeps me somewhat curious and wanting more.

But the show itself? They could do better. It's more cartoon-like than it is dark.

Wu xia
(2011)

wuxia... martial hero
Wuxia(pronounced woo-shee-ah)is a genre label of Chinese fiction about the trials and tribulation of martial artists in ancient China. Often Loners, they serve no master, and may hide behind a notorious past which must come to a head at one point so as to realign the universal elements within.

Think along the thematic of Eastwood's spaghetti western but far more sublime than that.

This is a remarkable cinematic journey - so far, one i took four times with each sitting revealing a deeper message about our own inner struggle with our duality of light and darkness

Donnie Yen is a wonderful and very subtle actor. He's got acting chops and even without the choreographed martial arts, he's a delight to watch. Once of his best performance. In this movie, he's the karmic Wuxia

Takeshi Kaneshiro, another fine Asian actor, plays the perfect foil, a prefecture detective of the scientific and logical mind caught between his own self righteousness and his admittance that there is no such thing as good men. He's the catalyst to the storm ahead.

I've read most of the reviews posted and they are all excellent.

All i can add to them is the finale, a brutal battle royal between the head "demon" of the clan and his offspring no longer under his spell, is simply epic and unforgettable and will surely have your heart pounding on an adrenaline high till the denouement.

One of the few movies IMHO that deserve a 10

The Lone Ranger
(2013)

Better than you heard
the critics bashed this movie but to my surprise, this is one of the better movies I've seen Depp in quite sometime.

I luv Depp but much of the output lately leaves me somewhat unfulfilled.

In fact, it's Ruth Wilson that somewhat drew me in to watching this western otherwise i would have passed on it

I was expecting a redux of Jack Sparrow character but far from that.

Decent story line, characters are somewhat walking caricatures but still worth a few cups of popcorn. Much stereotyping but nothing with bad intent

Not high art but a fun western with some well timed good chuckles.

Good movie for a lazy Sunday or rainy day since it's a tad long at close to 3 hours.

Predestination
(2014)

Uroboros...one is the all!
I rarely give a 10, and 9s not that more frequently but this film deserves it.

Cast is superb, the setting is neo victorian a la down under, and the plot is a timeless clock that resets itself every 24 hours.

Oz production so don't expect the big whiz bang CGI extravaganza but rather a step into a black hole. for a non Hollywood big badazz budget? remarkable cinematographic journey into a wormhole!

Let's forget the hard science about time travel because that in itself is a paradox wrapped in a conundrum of time and space.

Let's look instead at the metaphysical narrative of this movie - the rich sub text, the relationships between the fallacious illusion of reality vs the shadowless instinctual drives.

Yin and Yang... Good and Evil... Love and hate... The glass half full or empty

It's never too late to change tomorrow but always late to change the past only because the serpent eats its own tail because that's its predestination

A truly great interpretation of a short story by the dean of science fiction writers, Robert A. Heinlein...enjoy the ride but do try to take this tale (or is it tail?) in small delectable bites if you desire to gaze beyond your own image in the mirror so you may love your true self.

We Still Kill the Old Way
(2014)

Lots of fun ...even if predictable
Not going to rehash the plot line but my expectations were minimal at first but the movie surprised me. But then again i'm an old fart like the protagonist and i've been around the street a few times myself mates.

Sit back and enjoy the relationship between these former bad boys reunited to avenge the death of one of their own. It's brimming with hilarity.

Might not be your cup of tea but i enjoyed the show. Of course you'll be cheering for the lads to give those ruffians a good thrashing.

Happy viewing.

Cheers!
