Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: The Totally Excellent Adventures of Mack and the D
(2020)
Episode 7, Season 7

First miss of the season
I was quite liking and having fun with the decade-per-decade-themed episodes, but this one took the fun and turned it into straight farce. An otherwise very enjoyable season though!

Star Trek: Picard: Stardust City Rag
(2020)
Episode 5, Season 1

oh boy
The episode starts with very graphic torture, which is of course why I watch Star Trek. The character is then summarily "mercy killed" even though the very graphic torture scene didn't actually show me a mercy kill was necessary at all. I was left agape not by how gory it was but at how easy the hero gave up and proceeded to mercy kill. And that was just the first five minutes! Since I watch Star Trek to see the heroes succumb to wanton violence and revenge, I was very glad to keep watching.

This is just some mediocre gritty scifi show. The spirit of Star Trek died maybe ten years ago and these new shows are not trying to revive it but burying it deeper and deeper.

El día de la bestia
(1995)

Among the best of its kind
This is the film from De la Iglesia I hold in the highest regard. I don't know if it's his best, but I certainly love it the most.

Basically, the plot centers around a Spanish priest who thinks he has decoded a message from the Book of Revelation foretelling the date the Antichrist will be born: December the 25th, 1995. And so, during Christmas eve, knowing his Enemy is powerful, he embarks on a mission to prevent it... During the course of the night he most prominently meets a fat, irreverent and dirty heavy-metal fan on the one hand and the host of a TV program centered on the paranormal (who is of course a farce) on the other.

The movie first and foremost is riddled with dark humor (right from the very first scene), all the while, we will be treated to several scenes so well crafted that they will have you on the edge of the seat either gripping your nerves or scaring you to hell.

Acting (the protagonist trio is excellent), plot (the ending will leave you thinking!), pacing (some will argue it drags a little towards the ending), characters (a priest, a heavy metal fan and a charlatan teaming up!), the heavy-metal soundtrack... everything is perfect.

I think we can safely say that if you like Raimi's/Jackson's horror days, - minus the slapstick and absurdist gore - you will love this one. Or, for example, 'Shaun of the Dead' has an scene which is essentially the same to one in this superb film. Horror fans simply have to see it.

Metoroporisu
(2001)

Wondrous. Just beautiful.
The first and most concise thing I have to say about this movie is that it is beautiful. At first I was taken aback by the decision to have "old-style" character designs, but in the end it works perfectly.

The themes we get to explore here range from love in many of its forms (by far the main theme) to political plotting to social-class struggle to robot rebellion to authoritarian power-concentration to narcissism... all that you expect from your good sci-fi. While I can concede that many aspects are not really developed (or even seem childish) the whole package is so nicely made that you won't notice, nor care.

And the climax! It's just marvelous and overpowering, both visually and musically! Trust me, you just got to see it.

Historias mínimas
(2002)

Small stories that become more than what was anticipated
This is a wonderful film about the "little" lives of "little" people, whose stories (briefly) interwind.

Now, it may be about "little" people, but they all HAVE a life and things for us to see and even relate to (unlike many other similar movies). Furthermore, most of the actors are amateur locals and they all shine.

Mr. Justo is a retired man who suddenly decides to "escape" from home in search of a long-lost dog.

María is a very simple and shy housewife who has won a spot on a TV games show. It's very interesting to see how she reacts to being in a (quite small!) TV program, and how the other participants and staff behave in contrast to her.

Roberto is a traveling salesman, a somewhat obsessive character who wants to make (and actually goes to great lengths in order to produce) the perfect gift for the son of a widow (one of his clients) he has become love-struck with. This is by far the most lovable character, he's charming, funny, somewhat clumsy and superbly acted by Javier Lombardo (the only professional actor featured.) We will also meet several minor characters (most prominently a molecular biologist who has hit the road in search for her future) who are not developed but deliciously fill their small places.

This all happens in the routes and small towns throughout the Patagonia region, against the backdrop of its deserts.

All in all, an amazing film, with some great stories that slowly unwind but quickly become more than was anticipated.

The Fountain
(2006)

An amazing movie.
Truly amazing. Excellent acting and direction, a very interesting and thought-provoking plot (presented through three stories set in the past, present and future), great photography work for the different eras and unique visual effects (as little CG as was possible).

It doesn't matter if any of three stories are real, a figment of the imagination of any of the characters, a possible future, a dream... What matters is the acceptance of death, the denial of it, coping with a horrible situation, the obsession that may come with that, and ultimately, the never-ending love between Hugh Jackman's and Rachel Weisz's characters. From there, you are free to build up the connections between the three timelines and decide what you make of them, all the while enjoying an emotional and visual treat.

Also, the soundtrack alone is superb!
