Manifest
(2018)

Overall Worth Watching
Overall, the series is worth watching. The story was interesting for the most part, although it got to be a little bit like The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, in that the story lines got to be a little tedious and I was just waiting for it to play out the string so I could see how it ends.

The main reason I couldn't give this series a higher rating is because of there was a lot of over emoting by many of the actors during the episodes, although to be fair the problem may have been more with the writing. I say this because the acting per se was fine, but the lines they had to deliver required them to over remote.

The final episode was very good, and made it worth watching the whole series.

Questioning Darwin
(2014)

They Should have Interviewed Scientists who Believe in God
This documentary discusses Darwin's journey to the Galapagos islands on the HMS Beagle, and his conversion from a believer in God to an atheist. It contrasted this with interviews of fundamentalist Christians, who do not seriously challenge Darwin's theories from a scientific standpoint. All it provides is the fundamentalist Christians stating that they believe in God, with no scientific evidence to support their believes.

My undergraduate degree is in chemical engineering, and I've been exposed to a considerable amount of science and scientific research. I'm also a Christian, but do not blindly believe. I've investigated the scientific basis for the belief in God, and challenges to Darwin's theory of evolution, and there are plenty of scientific challenges to the theory. There's also an extensive amount of scientific evidence supporting belief in God. But none of this is ever presented in this documentary.

There also is no discussion of the problems with Darwins's theory of evolution. For example, there's nothing in the fossil record that establishes one species evolving into a separate species. There are also major concerns in the fossil record with the Cambrian explosion, where all current 580 different phyla appeared in the wink of an eye (from a geological time frame perspective), which argues against evolution. The program would've been much more informative if it included a discussion about things along these lines, either challenging his theory or addressing its shortcomings.

I have no issues with Darwin's theory of evolution from a religious perspective, for the above reasons, and others, my concerns are more from the scientific perspective.

Vanishing Point
(1971)

It's The Car Stupid
If you are a fan of '60s and '70s muscle cars, this is the movie for you. If you're not a car person, then this may not be your cup of tea.

Barry Newman gives a good performance as the main character, Kowalski, Cleavon Little gives a very good performance as a quasi-spiritual/psychic deejay, and Dean Jagger (the general in White Christmas) does a good job as the old prospector in the desert. Other than that, I could take or leave the plot or performances by the other actors.

But I did give the movie eight stars because despite its flaws, I love muscle cars, particularly Mopars, and I love watching muscle cars go fast. So go ahead, call me shallow; I know what I like, why I like it, and I loved this movie.

MH370: The Plane That Disappeared
(2023)

Just When I Didn't Think I Could Think any Less of Journalism
Coach Bobby Knight famously said, regarding journalists, that most of us learn how to write by the second grade, and then move onto greater things.

I hold journalists in very low regard, since everything I've ever read by reporters of which I had personal knowledge was absolutely and completely wrong. It's almost as if they go out of their way to intentionally get the story incorrect. However, the "journalist" and this show seem to have reached a new low in terms of idiocy. They are spinning these far-flung, wild conspiracy theories, all the while blatantly ignoring facts and information. As an example, one journalist posits that the Russians went into the electronic hold and flew the plane from there. This, despite the fact that it's impossible to fly an airplane from the electronics hold.

Don't waste your time with his piece of garbage. As others have said, if you want to learn something factual and useful, there are other documentaries that are available.

The Professor and the Madman
(2019)

Excellent Movie
I hadn't heard anything about this movie; I stumbled upon it. All the performances are top notch and the story is one of forgiveness and compassion. I highly recommend it.

Westworld
(2016)

First Season Great
The first season was excellent. It tracked the book and original movie, but improved on the movie. Seasons 2 & 3 are an incoherent mess, with senseless violence and no plot to speak of; just a bunch of confusing twists intended to show how deep the writers are. But in reality it's poor story telling. If the audience can't track the story, it's the fault of the writers, not the audience.

Secretariat
(2010)

Maybe Next Time They'll Make a Movie About Secretariat
The movie is great for families, as there were a number of children in the theater who really enjoyed the film. There isn't any off-color language or scenes, and it is well acted and well made. My main complaint is that it really seemed to be the Penny Tweedy story, and not that much about Secretariat. If you want to take your children to a well made movie with horses, this is a good film. If you want to learn about the greatest racehorse of the 20th century, go to you tube and watch old clips of the actual horse itself. If you're looking for a good movie about a horse, buy or rent Seabiscuit. That movie tells much more of the story about the horse.
