Beneath the Surface
(2007)

Give Blake Reigle A Budget! NOW!
This pretty boy knows how to direct a movie! Damn fine job! Some of the acting was not up to par, but the directing was superb! With the budget he had, he absolutely rocked it. The film was just charming, just a damn treat to watch. In some ways it was better than zombieland. It left you with the feeling of just being totally charmed by the female lead, who kind of stole the show without really doing anything. The casting was pretty spot on, and overall the voodoo theme was good, but the budget revealed itself in some of the poor acting takes, although that almost seemed intentional. The only thing I didn't like was the totally obnoxious and irrational behavior of the teenagers in the film, but it was well written and true.

The Tall Man
(2012)

People who rate this film highly are developmentally disabled
This film had good ideas - but that does NOT make it a good film. It was banal! The title is obviously misleading, and although using superstition to explain a secret adoption trafficking ring may make sense theatrically, it insinuates that poor people are too stupid to figure out what is happening to their kids so THEY need superstition to explain it. That makes it offensive as well as banal. This film was absolutely terrible and those who rated it a good film are the ones who are stupid. In addition, the red herring of the woman's sacrifice as the scapegoat is also banal. If the community used the tall man as their superstitious explanation to begin with, how did they suddenly become smarter and "need" a real explanation vis a vis serial killer. So many holes in the plot it's just pathetic.
