Chris Chan: A Comprehensive History
(2018)

I'm at a loss for words but it is extremely compelling
I'm at a loss for words but it is extremely compelling. I really don't know what to make of this year except to say that it pulls off what few documentaries do. It's never boring and seems to be painstakingly factual. The subject matter is just well again, words fall short. I guess you would call this a tragic story of Internet fame/infamy. Bingeworthy.

An American in Canada
(2002)

Shocked by the low ratings. I thought it was quite funny
Shocked by the low ratings. I thought it was quite funny. The show was staffed by really funny writers and actors.

A disgraced news anchor gets a job at the lowest rated morning show in Canada. This shows humor lies in his struggles adjusting to Canadian culture. Which in my opinion is ripe for jokes. Canadians are almost exactly like us and yet different in many ways and I thought the show was quite funny. I recommend you take a look.

The News with Shepard Smith
(2020)

Really this is the best national news cast on TV
Really this is the best national news cast on TV. Shepard Smith and the people behind the scenes deliver an exciting, factual, human newscast every day. It's really great to see him back on television. They've honestly created the best national new show on TV. There's a production value and an energy and enthusiasm that is utterly missing from sources like CNN. But it's not overly sensational like Fox either. Good hard news in an exciting format.

Zack Snyder's Justice League
(2021)

Predictably, it's trash
It's overwrought. It's got way too many damn lines and dumb character sequences and too many moments ago where you're going why the heck would he/she/they do that? If you hated superman returns, and you hated Batman versus superman, you're going to hate this too I assure you.

But this is not for us. This is for Zack Snyder's extremely loyal fan base. I look forward to the irrational defense of Snyder presenting this movie in 4:3. Not IMAX, not widescreen, square, like your television used to be.

Avenue 5
(2020)

How did this even get made?
I watched less than 15 minutes of it and it was so clear to me that it was unsalvageable at that point, I have no problems telling you to avoid wasting your time watching any of it. I don't understand how millions of dollars were spent on something so poorly written and so not funny.

The direction and writing are terrible. And as a result the cast doesn't seem to get what they are saying either, and so the performances are mediocre. There's no sense of comic timing, no banter worth remembering, it's all just klutzy and slapdash. Everything is dumb, but not in a clever or funny way, like Veep or The Office or a Mike Judge comedy. It's just dumb, as though there was no one with any talent or experience producing this show at any level.

In days of old, a pilot would've been made, and if the pilot was turning out that badly, networks would have had it rewritten and re-shot. This was true with Mary Tyler Moore and even recently with Game of Thrones.

It's that bad. I'll stop at this point, because I don't know how to avoid saying over and over again - - how did this even get made?

City on a Hill
(2019)

Worth watching for Kevin Bacon and little else
Watching the first episode, I was thinking the show is a 9. But it hasn't held up well. Bacon and a few of the other actors give great performances, but the show has stretched and padded the story out to forever. And at times I can't help but say "no way this would ever happen." And there are uninteresting characters that you just don't need to know about, and there's way too much just talking about stuff. Overall I'm disappointed, but I keep watching mainly just for Kevin Bacon. He's awesome in this.

Suicide Squad
(2016)

Better than the previous DC movies, but still short of good
I was expecting awesomeness for about 10 minutes of this movie. It starts with an exciting bang, but it starts to get muddled, reportedly due to many re-shoots and edits. Then you start to realize you're mostly going to get pretty CGI.

The film has no heart. There's a scene where one of the members refers to the Suicide Squad as "family", but that's the moment when I said to myself, we were never shown what makes these people feel like family. It's as empty as that Batman V Superman moment when Superman and Batman are suddenly friends because they realize their moms share the same first name.

Marvel had another breakaway cult hit called "Guardians of the Galaxy", and DC rushed to have one just like it, and they fell short of a James Gunn thrill ride with living, beating heart.

It's not bad, but it doesn't rise to "good".

On the technical side, I see no reason to pay for 3D or IMAX. The 3D post processing is minimal and not convincing, and there are no must-see moments in IMAX.

Supergirl
(2015)

I feel like these reviews are too harsh. The show is well done and entertaining.
I am surprised by the low IMDb scores. This show is much better than a 6. I won't speculate on why

I'm an older dude so I won't claim I enjoyed all the teen girl scenes, but overall the show is well-written, well-acted, and well-directed. It has great special effects and fight sequences. Melissa Benoist and Calista Flockhart really steal the show.

The only thing that's odd about it is the complete absence of Superman, who is referred to in 3rd person several times. Yet he can't fly in for a hug or to help her when she's struggling? But this is a minor complaint. We know why, and we understand, I think.

This show is much better than Green Arrow, and has the potential to be better than The Flash.

I urge you to watch and decide for yourself.

Locke
(2013)

A fresh, compelling film
This is one of the best films of the year, but I can tell you why user reviews might be mixed. People are probably checking out a movie called "Locke" starring the guy who played Bane driving a car, and thinking they are about to see a high speed car chase movie. In fact, that's what I thought!

Well, it's not. It was probably a one-act play. I don't want to give anything away, but the entire film centers on the rock-solid acting of Tom Hardy and a small supporting cast. It's a superb film on every level. I'm so glad I accidentally watched it. My wife and I had a great time discussing the film afterward. I highly recommend it.

Elena
(2011)

A Fine Russian Film. Underrated (with caveats)
I think that the film deserves above an 8, which on my scale is where all films of excellence are to be found. I think the main reason it is in the 7's is because it's in the Russian style, and some Americans may not care for it. Russian films take their time. A Russian director has no hesitation setting up a shot of a character making coffee and washing the sink for a good stretch of film. Done right, the technique pulls you into close identification with the character and the environment.

The acting, writing, and directing are all top notch, and the examination of many levels of Russian life are fascinating. I urge you to take a gamble on this being an "8+" film!

Noah
(2014)

I thought it was a masterpiece
It's a flawed masterpiece, but I felt it was a thoughtful and entertaining imagining of the well-known myth. To each their own, I guess.

It's not true to any Biblical version I'm aware of, though there are many variations of this story in ancient history. There are points where there is too much explaining going on, and you get that feeling like when you watch the original Hollywood release of "Blade Runner", with Harrison Ford's horrible voice-over at the end, that compromises were made and the film had to be dumbed down.

It's very different from Aronofsky's other films. But like his other films, it features deeply conflicted and moving characters, brilliantly performed by the actors.

But me, personally, I was riveted. I must be a buffoon with bad taste, because I don't know anyone who liked it, besides me.

Batman Beyond
(2014)

I think this is a one-time short, not a TV episode
It's one of several 2-minute shorts commemorating Batman's 75th anniversary, I believe. It's brilliant but it's not a TV episode. You can find it on you-tube and yahoo video. It's probably also airing on Cartoon Network. It's a cruel tease to anyone who was a fan of the original series.

There is also another listing of it on IMDb credited to Bruce Timm. If you like Darwyn Cooke, check out the Parker series of comics. They are outstanding.

It appears to feature the original voice actors, most notably Kevin Conroy. And the theme music is there, too.

It's so short, hard to say more without giving away spoilers.

Believe
(2014)

Nice surprise twist, but little else
It seems to me that this show does not rise above the typical supernatural/action/mystery shows being produced of late. The premise is implausible. The show's mystery is probably unknown even to the writers and creators. It has one or two fine actors, and a somewhat surprise ending, and little else.

I'm also surprised by the budget of this show. If this was an indie film on youtube, we might be more forgiving, but this is a night-time network television show. The average audience member is too sophisticated to believe that we're actually watching a man on his way to his execution, in loose handcuffs, down a darkened hallway with two guards and a priest. It seems too much to ask us to forgive the low budget, the shaky premise, the poor direction and acting and camera-work, and the lack of music soundtrack, for so little payoff.

I suspect this show will be lucky to get a second season, and so I won't invest more time watching something that is unlikely to get an ending.

I've heard it suggested that if a film or TV show has a vague spiritual message, it will score high marks on IMDb, and this seems to be the only reason for this show to garner an 8+.

The Michael J. Fox Show
(2013)

I turned it off before it ended
I really wanted to like this. My mom has Parkinson's, so I'm always thrilled to be tuning in to a Michael J. Fox appearance. He's inspiring and entertaining, and he does a lot for the cause. But this show is a clunker. It feels artificial, as though designed by a committee. All the kids are sarcastic and uninteresting, the adults are lifeless annoying, and there was no charm, no warmth, and no laughs. The whole thing is awkward and hectic, and shows no promise.

It isn't hard at all to watch him, despite the fact he clearly has all the symptoms of the disease. It isn't formulaic like most of the sitcoms he's been in over the course of his life. It's just bad. He carries himself with the same relaxing charm he's always had. He appears to have shown up ready to give a great performance, but the people behind the scenes really let him down with this charmless bomb.

I couldn't make it to the end of one episode, much less the second that aired right after.

Bummer.
