Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom
(2023)

The Good, The Bad, and The Cringe
Much like the first film, Jason Momoa's charisma does a lot of the heavy lifting.

The brothers buddying up was heartwarming and convinced me to keep watching despite some of the most cringeworthy dialogue I've heard in a while. How Patrick Wilson delivered his "you're doing great" speech with a straight face I'll never know.

Randall Park is fabulous in every film he's in, and this one is no different. The man's just huggable.

Frankly I'd have written she who must not be named out completely, every scene with her just grates. What's the opposite of charisma?

The plot is pretty tortured, and none of it should work, but I gave it 7 out of 10 because there's enough charm and heart to make one a little more forgiving.

Bram Stoker's Van Helsing
(2021)

How did this get greenlit?
The acting, the dialogue, the direction, all awful. I've seen better primary school productions.

Nothing like the book so using the name Bram Stoker is an outrage and an insult. Tedious and amateurish.

I cannot fathom how anyone had the front to make and release this tosh. I dread to think how bad the actors were who DIDN'T get the parts.

It looks like the effects budget was around fifty pounds, tops. I could shoot a better version on my iPhone with randoms off the street. Please steer clear of this terrible film, I can't believe many people stuck with it to the end, I had to turn it off after 30 minutes.

Interview with the Vampire
(2022)

Wrong decade, too many liberties taken
I don't mind the colour blind casting, but the whole character of Louis has been changed. Also I don't care for setting it so much later than the original. Feels like vandalism. At least they got Lestat right. And Daniel was still young when turned by Armand, that can't happen now. Change for the sake of change feels like vanity.

Louis never had the gift of telepathy, and stopping time was never one of their powers either.

Don't get me wrong, it's entertaining enough, but it lost so much of the nuance of the source material. On the positive side the acting is great, and when taken as a whole different story it's certainly watchable. But it's not Interview With The Vampire.

Hannibal
(2013)

Seasons 1&2 are a masterpiece. Season 3 kind of disappeared up its own butt
I normally avoid gory horror, but this was just mesmerising, and kind of drags you right down the crazy path with them.

Faultless acting, from everyone. My only niggle was that season 3 kind of devolved into all style and imagery at the expense of plot. The acting never falters, but that last season seemed a little too pleased at its own poetry but moved at a glacial pace. I had to give up on it as I realised that the was still watching out of loyalty and not actually enjoying it anymore.

Hope they get the rights to the other books and return to form. With those leads it can absolutely get back to its best.

ill Ray: the King
(2017)

Goofy Fun
I love Lena Headey in this video. It's nice to see her goof around and be liberatingly free spirited. Always makes me smile.
