First Man
(2018)

What a dreary mess
If you want a dreary portrayal of one of the most interesting periods in history, great. But the NASA astronauts, officials, spouses and staff were not mopey hangdog mutes who lived without decent lighting. All other accounts of this period offer a much fuller and less bleak picture. How did the filmmakers make a film about a great victory for mankind into something so dark, depressing and sad?

Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked
(2011)

The best of the four
These are silly movies but this is the best of the four. Some good humor hidden on the island for the parents. Also it never gets old watching extras dance with CGI chipmunks. OK a little old. OK the dance off scene with the Fanta girls more or less is the worst thing ever done in any medium.

The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann
(2019)

Boring, slow rehash with an agenda
Spoiler alert: The city where this happened has a rich history of tourism aimed at middle class Brits. Yawwwn. I think they show the same woman about five times in the first two episodes saying how she was shocked that this happened there. They spend more time on making that point than on explaining what "this" is. They only later parrot the theory that this was pet of some sex ring.

The one thing they explore well is how the McCanns were so willing to use the media attention to benefit the search. Of course, no mention of why they refused to participate in this garbage.

The Grinch
(2018)

5 ways this Grinch is better than the 2000 live action movie
I'm love the Jim Carrey movie The Grinch Who Stole Christmas. Or at least I thought I did. But this animated version is superior in five ways:

1. The Grinch is sad and lonely and miserable. He's not angry and bitter and disgusting. That's an interesting take on the guy. Jim Carrey took the disgusting Grinch as far as it could go. In this movie you like the Grinch and he is kind to Max and to his reindeer. It's unexpected and kinda cool. 2. The Whos are fundamentally good. Yes Suess wrote the book as a lesson against commercialism of Christmas, but the village joins together and happily sings without all that stuff. In this version, they are good-hearted and love Christmas - Even singing religious songs! In the 2000 film they are competitive, gossipy, mean, bullying, selfish and easily misled by a vindictive mayor. Where'd that come from? 3. With better characters you also don't have any fear and hate of someone who is different. The Whos don't fear or dislike the Grinch. They dislike some of his behavior. Far more enlightened. 4. The kids and side characters were all cute as hell. Cindy Lou Who in the 2000 movie was the only bright spot in a dark world. 5. The narration by Pherrell and the extra verse throughout is clever and cool. The 2000 film seemed a little too afraid to depart from or add to Seuss' own words. This movie takes risks and they pay off.

Mutt & Stuff
(2015)

Worst thing ever on TV
This is seriously bad. Kids will actually be dumber if they watch it, which they should never ever do.

The concept is good, and it is easy to see why is was given a green light, but the execution is so horrible. The writing is about as bad as it could be, but the annoying over-the-top delivery of these lines is too much for anyone to bear.

A tip for the director: make the actor watch a few episodes of Sesame Street. The adults there who act with puppets seem ... Human. It's easy. Don't sing-song-shout every word you say and present them with grand gestures.
