Luckiest Girl Alive
(2022)

A very powerful drama
This is a very powerful Shakespearean style tragedy and drama. This movie is beyond powerful. It depicts the tragedy of sexual assault from the victim's point of view. The world around her is too misogynistic to empathize with her and her pain. In fact, she is continuously blamed. Her mother told her that she was disgusted with her. The school blames her for the subsequent tragedies that face her offenders. Even her fiancé is unpleasantly shocked that she has publicly disclosed her tragedy. In fact, she has to constantly defend her position. After all, she was the victim and she has suffered the agony of sexual assault.

Wednesday
(2022)

A new Ms.Spock?
Jenna Ortega is at her best. Why Wednesday character is so popular with young girls? Why her dance routine, be it artistic or not, has been imitated by so many young girls online? Wednesday is a role model for many young girls. She is stoic and strong. She can handle three violent boys on her own as if they were nothing. She is fearless. Wednesday can dig a grave in a cemetery at night! Her prowess in fencing is undeniable. She does not back down in fear. Wednesday finds death defying challenges intriguing . Wednesday is also talented. She can play and dance as well as she can fight. Wednesday is logical, albeit morbid. In summary, Wednesday is someone to look up to. She manages her emotions with strength and composure.

Jurassic World Dominion
(2022)

It is a disappointment
I can not figure out what was this movie. The best I can describe it is James Bond meets Jurassic Park meets Birds. I should call it Raiders of the Lost Jurassic park. It brought all the past characters back without any plot or story. The movie jumps from one action scene to the next without any realistic connection. Realistic is not the way I would describe this movie: the heroes survive anything thrown at them by the skin of their teeth. There is no awe or originality in this movie. I felt as if the movie tried to be more of a horror-action adventure movie. The special effect, however, are state of art. In any case, I have one simple prayer: please let this be the last Jurassic movie to be made.

The Courier
(2020)

A powerful Cold War drama.
A well written and well acted movie. It is about a forgotten spy incident between two patriotic men, one British and one Russian. It is a tragedy all around with little or no relief. For viewers who are expecting an action packed movie, this is may be a disappointment. However, if one is looking for a realistic drama based on a true story, this feature movie is a must. The acting is also superb.

Emma.
(2020)

Anya Taylor Joy at her best.
Recently, I saw both this Emma and the 1996 Emma. Undoubtedly, this movie offers a much better presentation than I hoped for. This is a much better feature movie than 1996 Emma. Anya Taylor Joy provides a superb presentation and portrait of the Character Emma. She is a tremendous versatile actress with prowess. She becomes, indeed, Emma. She is , simply, natural. It takes one on a time travel to the early 19th century Britain. This feature movie both entertains you and earns your respect.

The Protégé
(2021)

A disaster worse than Titanic.
I truly love Maggy Q. She is a beautiful and skilled actress with Charisma. Beside her, I liked nothing else about this movie. It seems that it was an all action packed video game turned into a feature film. It may be very popular with teenagers with ADHD. It was packed with unrealistic action. There was a very weak plot. Of course, the plot is revealed early in the movie. Even imagining Michael Keaton as some sort of super martial art champion was too much for me. They could have, instead, casted Pee Wee Herman. The movie, then, would have some sense of humour! Frankly, I could not convince myself to watch it to the end.

The Gilded Age
(2022)

A very refreshing show.
This is a tv series well worth watching. It contains a sophisticated glance at the history of New York, America, and American aristocracy in 19th century. Many movies and series have focused on wild and untamed American west. This show depicts the well tamed, cultured, and civilized American east of the same time period. How the newly rich were not accepted by the established higher class of New York. It is interesting and captivates the attention of the viewers. One may say it is Dynasty set in 1880s.

The Ice Road
(2021)

Realistic thriller right on real location
This is a totally different and refreshing and original type of thriller. For started it was not shot in LA, New York, or Hollywood. They filmed it right on location: cold and icy conditions of Manitoba, Canada. More movies should be made in scenic country roads of Canada. Indeed, more movies should be made outside Hollywood studios. One could see that the actors were genuinely cold! It had a true realism without too much special effect and fake terrain.

Tenet
(2020)

Falls simply Flat
This movie is an orphan. It lacks identity. I surmise that it tries to be a sophisticated sort of James Bond movie with a science fiction twist. I was trying hard to figure out what this film is: is it a horror movie? Is it an action adventure movie? Is it a suspense or thriller? Is it a science fiction? Well, it fails to be any of the above. There was too much fast talking to be a deep thriller. There was too much violence to be a suspense or science fiction. Finally , the actors fail to deliver-with the exception of brilliant Elizabeth Debicki. My recommendation: do not bother with this movie.

Unhinged
(2020)

Depiction of an angry middle age white man.
This movie is very frank and realistic when it comes to the depiction of one angry middle age white man in North America. Russell Crow presents his best performance ever. He is an overweight and out of shape older man who feels that the world has done him wrong. He is loosing it. Perhaps he has lost his marriage, his house, his job and much more. He is violently angry. All he wants is a little bit of respect. The movie shows raw violence without sugarcoating it: this man hurts men and women without any remorse or compunction. It is not an easy movie to watch.

Death of Me
(2020)

Refreshing horror-thriller
First, this movie was set in green and beautiful Thailand. It is, indeed, refreshing to see a Hollywood movie not set in Los Angles, New York, or Chicago. Even some movies, filmed in Canada, claim to be set in LA. In fact, there is much talent in a country such as Thailand. The movie leaves you puzzled, surprised, and sometimes at the edge of your seat. I had to watch it twice to comprehend all the hidden clues. The ending is also twisted and surprising. Finally, Maggie Q , as beautiful as she is, provides a superb performance.

Rogue
(2020)

Pleasantly entertaining
I am not going to write a tedious lengthy review on this film. It is an action packed thriller. It keeps you at the edge of your seat with a few twists and surprises. The characters are well developed for an entertaining action movie. The highlight of the movie is Megan Fox. Indeed, she delivers. She portrays a tough no nonsense leader of a pack of mercenaries. The character is competent, fierce, charismatic with nerves of steel. The graphics of the lioness, however, were poorly done. The setting was in South Africa. This is a refreshing change from most action packed movies set in LA or New York. In summary, it is an entertaining movie that should not be taken too assiduously.

You Should Have Left
(2020)

A powerful suspense/horror
Lately, I have been longing for a horror movie to truly frighten me without blood and violence. Then came this movie. It is a psychological suspense that leaves you guessing until the last minute. The twist comes at the end and sheds light on everything. Perhaps, it also comes with a moral message: what wrong one has done shall always hunt him.

Underwater
(2020)

Disaster movie that is a disaster
This movie lacks identity! Is it something like the Alien mixed with ET with a flavour of the Terminator. The movie leaves the audiences confused! Is it a horror movie, an action packed movie, or a science fiction? Whatever it suppose to be , it is not good! It is missing a theme and the story line is weak.

Batwoman
(2019)

A novel twist on Batman
Kate is the new generation of the strong women of 21st century: she is strong and resourceful. She is self sufficient and strongly independent. She is dauntless and just as Batman protects the innocent. She is everything a Batwoman is expected to be. On the other hand, however, the story line is too dark and violent. Producer need to make a show appropriate for the family viewing: the young should be able to enjoy it while the old should nostalgically recall their childhood memories. Nevertheless, I look forward to the next episode!

Stumptown
(2019)

Very new idea.
This is a somewhat revolutionary show and very entertaining. The main hero is Dex played by the Canadian actress. Dex is no saint. Indeed she drinks much and there is an insinuation of gambling addiction. She seems to suffer from PTSD. However, Dex is both physically and emotionally strong. She is independent and very confident. Most of all, she is fearless and bold. Frankly, I like her character. The story is entertaining. It is an old fashion Private Investigator show with a twist.

Emergence
(2019)

Pleasant surprise
I usually do not like tv series with convoluted conspiracy themes. However, this series is pleasant with many positive attributes. The hero is very untraditional: a white divorced woman with an African American/Canadian ex husband who looks after her father. She is also chief of the local police. There is actually a story to follow with minimum of unnecessary violence and redundant special effect. I look forward to the next episode.

FBI
(2018)

A new detective show.
Let us face it, Missy Peregrym, the Canadian actress, is the centre piece of the show. She is, indeed, very beautiful, charismatic, and a good actresss for the leading role. The story could be better developed. It should include the twist of political and legal obstacles. Nevertheless, the first episode is entertaining.

Ocean's Eight
(2018)

Charming and entertaining!
It is suspenseful, intelligent, cerebral, and captivating. Casting eight women in the major roles is refreshing. This definitely proves that the prominent casts do not have to be incorrigibly masculine and aggressive. I definitely recommend this movie to everyone.

Lost in Space
(2018)

Disappointed.
I am disappointed. The original Lost in Space always left you with a warm feeling. It was more like Father Knows best in Space. Perhaps, I was left with this impression: one is not lost or alone as long as he is with his loving family. I am not sure how to interpret this new version.

Prime Suspect
(2011)

Prime Suspect is a good detective drama.
This series is perhaps one of the best detective series I have ever seen. It is a rich drama. First, it is not overwhelmingly focused on crime scene investigation. There other series for that purpose. Second, the characters are depicted in a three dimensional frame work. The police officers are not portrait as always perfect. The criminals are also not always presented as incorrigibly nefarious. The good guy does not always win and the strong sometimes cries. I was very impressed with the first episode when the strong lady detective went home and cried in the arms of her husband. She was simply human. Finally, this series has avoided irrelevant office work romance. The main detective is a married woman who only works in her office. This series has provided the balance between a rich drama and entertainment.
