Fear the Walking Dead
(2015)

Pointless impro on the walking dead theme.
I changed my rating a couple of times before settling for 5. It's hugely disappointing, the plot is meandering in any possible directions with very little chance of actually becoming a story. I cought myself thinking that there is really no script underpinning the scenes. Random action depending on whom of the actors show up for the shooting. Now Madison & Victor. Next Nick & Daniel. Who's up for any acting today? Luciana & Charlie? OK, what a hell.

To be fair, season 4 was good and season 6 no bad. That's all thanks to Morgan and John Dorie Jr who at least have some consistency. Both are good in terms of acting and character build-up. Madison is also good acting but the character is everywhere. Was she about 'no one's gone till is gone'? Second chances? Says so, plays the protective hen or lioness depending who's in charge.

Victor, Alicia and Daniel have very bad lines and not huge acting. Victor thinks he's Hamlet or something, overdoing massively. Daniel plays a Latin commando but is really a nice chef from South of France.

Space and time is another problem. North America must be a tiny county for people seem to get by by foot from California to Mexico, Texas, Louisiana & East Coast in a matter of days. Interesting that. Then a battle with the walkers starts and finishes while someone else in some aberant synchronicity can barely finish a sentence.

Doesn't do credit to the original 11 seasons of the Walking Dead. Alas.

Mayans M.C.
(2018)

Cool jackets, nothing else
Seasons 1 & 2 are mediocre to begin with, but watchable (if you are at the bottom of the list). But season 3... I am not sure I can get past it. Was it all improvised? Everything in disarray, every character going south, gloom and doom allover.

According to Vonnegut that can be a writing technique too. When things get from bad to worse linearly until something happens and then... boom! The uptrend kicks in It's that in Mayans MC this just doesn't work. Maybe it is not even supposed to work. Perhaps it only works in cinemas when the spectator voluntarily commits 2-3 hours of her or his time. But in a TV series? The temptation to abort is just too much.

Hawkeye
(2021)

Halfway to Home Alone
Christmassy and fun, and halfway to Home Alone spirit. The villains wear burgundy and green which is rather appropriate for the season. Each episode introduces a character at the very end which makes the series good for binge watching. The drama part is rounded up on the feeling of guilt, but not too deep and not very convincing.

Operation Finale
(2018)

True story?
I think that the real story of capture and trial of Eichmann is much more intersting and revealing than this fabrication.

Roma
(2018)

In a Few Words
Minimalist plot & amazing photography. Family ties beyond conventions against conventions that do not amount to much.

History of Love
I think it was quite revolutionary to cut all the loose end and stick to just one storyline: love.

Mektoub, My Love: Canto Uno
(2017)

East meets West in common places
Basically, lots of flesh. Scandalous, considering the action takes places in a muslim country, but the waves of visiting tourists makes flirt & nudity an everyday business. Amin's gaze is of an non-judgmental observer, reluctunt to engage. Love has little to do with the place, except for the lambs maybe - a cliche for innocence. Op-ending, the movie (hardly a story) lacks a morale; sometimes life is such.
