Gisaengsu: Deo geurei
(2024)

One of the best anime to live action adaptations
I don't understand how this show can be averaging a 7.3 rating for how good it is. It does not follow the typical k-drama tropes, no cheesy humor, no sexy male anti-hero, no deaths just to squeeze some tears from the viewer. It's a smart, gritty, no-nonsense crime/scifi drama that wastes no time in moving the story forward.

The two lead cast members are extremely likeable. Neither of them are particularly charismatic but the viewer will naturally gravitate towards their vulnerability and their willingness of accepting their place among the bottom rungs of society.

Acting is consistently good throughout and avoids the typical melodrama you'd find in the same genre.

Fallout
(2024)

Best video game adaptation since Arcane
I've played all the Fallout games including its predecessor Wasteland and this show almost brings a tear to this old gamers eyes. A faithful adaption in everyway, bundled with an interesting story filled with intrigue. All the characters are flawed on various levels but you'd expect that in a post-apocalyptic world. No one is really likeable but they are at least relatable as they each show us what could be the ugliest parts of ourselves.

The set pieces are top notch and oftentimes look just like the games. They spared no expense here. Actors were cast well and it was good to see some old names like Ponch from CHIPs make an appearance.

We don't get shows this good often which is a shame and when we do we feel spoiled. Hopefully this isn't a one hit wonder and the next season if there is one will be just as good.

Entertaining, well-written scifi
Let me start by saying I have not read any of the books. I am reviewing the show solely off its own merits. As a scifi buff who loves Battlestar Galactica, Farscape, The Expanse, I'd rank this show up there with them. The story is interesting and thought-provoking and far exceeds the writing quality of its contemporaries. It's not quite up there with Andor but never cringeworthy like some of the writing you'll see in the star trek spinoffs. Aside from the actress who plays Salvor Hardin, casting was excellent, especially for Gaal, Harry, Day, and Demerzel.

The rating on IMDB is in the mid sevens currently but this show overall is greater than the sum of its parts as you can see by the individual episode reviews. The show may be hard to swallow for fans of the book but will be a refreshing treat for most scifi aficionados.

A Quiet Masterpiece
I've been trying not to binge this show because to me it is best consumed an episode or two at a time. I normally enjoy watching shows together with my wife but since she doesn't particularly have a taste for it, I find it most enjoyable watching alone at night when everyone is in bed. Although the stories are not particularly groundbreaking, each episode introduces new characters whose stories are reverently, and gently told. The subtle and thoughtful pacing has no equal among western shows and is perhaps due to the culture and setting as much as the story writing.

I'm nearly through the third season and looking forward to slowly moving through the last two. I don't believe there has been, or will be anything quite like it.

The Last of Us
(2023)

Wandering off the beaten path
The show is great when it follows the events of the game and is just as much of a masterpiece. It's when the writers stray from the source material that things start to go downhill sometimes drastically. Most of the added content boils down to poorly executed recycled trope trash that we've already seen in some other apocalypse film.

I really tried to like this version of Ellie and found myself constantly performing mental gymnastics to empathize with her. This proved to be futile because I realized that she's simply a poorly written character. She has no chemistry with Joel and at times, it seemed the writers had to alter his character to force some kind of bond. It felt completely unnatural and never plausible.

Bella Ramsey acted well, especially in episode 8. Pedro Pascal on the other hand was far better in his GOT role. As mentioned before, his lines felt forced in many instances and you can tell he was trying his best to make it work.

In trying to create something new, the writers ended up producing a story that's more of a Frankenstein's monster than the mutated ones portrayed in the show.

Love covers all offenses
Beautifully animated show telling a story of a boy who rises above the ridicule and disrespect he's been shown. Tugged at heart-strings I did not know I had. For the most part this is a story of love. The protagonist Bojii would not be who he is were it not for the affection and care of a few important people in his life. When the whole world sees him as one thing, it's the love of a few that continues to strengthen him.

I finished this series shortly before the mass school shooting in Texas. Apart from the politics surrounding gun control, I could not help but think how things would have been different had the shooter (who had been bullied due to his speech impediment) been the recipient of the kind of loved Bojii did. I am in no way excusing his actions but the phrase "hurt people hurt people" is truth.

Perhaps someone hurting will watch this show and be inspired. Despite the pain you're facing, do not let it blind you from remembering the love you've been given. If they are no longer present in your lives, remain vigilant and patient. As Fred Rogers was quoted saying "look for the helpers".

Everything Everywhere All at Once
(2022)

Philosophically shallow but beautifully executed
Probably the most original take on optimistic nihilism ever put on film. The movie does a great job of conveying the everything, everywhere, all-at-once-ness that the protagonist is experiencing. Masterfully assembled set pieces come together in a way where the end result is greater than the sum of its parts. Feels a little longer than it needs to be since the message being conveyed is shallow. Worth the price of a matinee ticket.

Raised by Wolves: The Beginning
(2020)
Episode 10, Season 1

How did it go downhill so fast
It took GoT six seasons to run itself into the ground. RbW does it on the 10th episode. The dialog between Father and Mother was atrocious. Season two will need to be fantastic to undo this travesty.

The Old Guard
(2020)

Tripe garbage
These made for streaming movies target the lowest common denominator among viewers. Bad dialog, music, editing, color-grading. Could've been so much better if they actually put some heart and passion into it. Instead we have this mindless carnage-fest. No more than 30 seconds of exposition into the old guard's motivations. They're given supernatural abilities yet of course it can't be from a higher power because that doesn't exist. Agenda much? Please, enough with this pretentious nonsense.
