The Expendables 2
(2012)

When we were young...
It happens often to me to lie on the couch and watch endless rubbish on HBO or on whatever channel is on, because I'm too lazy or not in the mood to get in touch with any movie in particular. However, when I decide to view a certain movie, most frequently it happens usually because it is directed by one of my favourite directors, and I really want to see it, and make some efforts for that.

Exceptionally, for Expendables 2, my desire to see the movie was due to the cast - most of the heroes of my childhood and (partially) adolescence: the Lone Wolf, Terminator, Die Hard, Rambo, Universal Soldier, Transporter, to name only but a few... And to have them all together on the same stage - almost priceless!

My taste in movies changed over the years, but I could not have missed this one. At least for the above reason. And the movie provides it all. For 102 minutes I felt like being a young boy again. Within the first 15 minutes, I couldn't eat my popcorn, as my eyes were wide open tied to the screen. Who cares about the story, about being politically correct, about moral discussions, etc... You have the heroes in front of you, doing what they know best, and that is getting the world rid of the bad ones, in their specific manner.

I give this movie a rate of 9, and that is not about anything like the storyline, or the complex development of characters (which basically does not exist), but for my guilty pleasure of watching famous lines like "I'll be back" and the likes.

Plus, my girlfriend came with me to this movie basically as a favour to myself, but she had very similar feelings after it.

So, if you are into it, go and immerse yourself in its atmosphere!

Cannibal Holocaust
(1980)

People take it too seriously
So, c'mon, this movie is banned in 33 countries?! banned, in what sense? Like porn movies are banned, or how?! I mean, Quentin Tarantino kills more men in his films than this one does, and so does Rambo, and the rest of the gang... This movie does indeed show a lot of skin, and a lot of violence, but does not deserve the honor of being banned. Or, at least, it does deserve to be banned as a bad movie, and as a waste of 1.5 hours of your life, but, hello then, 99% of the movies should be banned.

The entire movie is a joke. The act is played badly, there is no conflict, the characters are poor.

So: 3 reasons not to see this movie: 1. unnecessary human violence 2. unnecessary animal violence 3. a lot of picture of the two above

3 reasons why to see this movie: 1. it is considered a landmark of the genre - so see it for yourself, and never again be biased by people suggesting to see a movie 2. none 3. none

The Lost City
(2005)

Long, boring and overrated... Not worthy of 2.24hrs of your life.
As I wish to visit Cuba if I'll have the chance, I thought of this movie that it would be an interesting introduction to the city of Havana, to its people and to its history. Now, to be fair with the movie, it has great soundtrack and it shows people dancing everywhere (at least, they used to do so before Fidel came). Apart from that, the general feeling while watching the movie was that probably Andy Garcia had in his mind something like: "hey, I'm the producer, it's my money, so I'll direct it, make the score, and play the leading role!".

I noticed other comments about how deep and insightful this movie is. In my view it is far from that. We had our own share of communism in Romania, so I guess I know what I'm talking about. Mr. Garcia does not. He only has a shallow vision about what happened there, about the drama of the people and about what a revolution means (or at least this is what he shows to us).

Regarding the main characters, I found them to be unconvincing. I count here the entire family of the main character. And all the time we have close-ups of Mr. Garcia's eyes, reminding me about the expression of Steven Seagal.

I wouldn't have bothered to write a review, but I really felt cheated for the time I spent watching the movie. Whatever you want (history, romance, drama, good acting, etc.) try something else.

Lola rennt
(1998)

The Butterfly Effect?!
A young girl has 20 minutes (or something) to help her boyfriend; her course of action is very clear, but little details have significant effect on her actions. We are being offered three courses of action, all of them altered by very small details.

This movie is one of the best illustrations of the "butterfly effect", which is defined as "small variations in the initial conditions of a dynamical system produce large variations in the long term behavior of the system" (wikipedia definition).

I fail to give it a 10 out of 10 due to the unfinished story about the homeless guy.

Fargo
(1996)

A philosophical approach that Tarantino misses
I tried to find something to say about this movie; the problem is that it left me speechless; I compare it with other great movies I saw before; it is just great: go and see it! Definitely! Take a very common plot: a guy hires two villains to kidnap his wife; things do not go as planned. Seen it a thousand times. So, what's new? Well, it just keeps you in front of the screen, waiting to see what happens next. And you will be surprised, believe me. It lack the theatricals of a Tarantino movie (fans will know what I mean...), but, instead, offers a new approach of life, with almost nobody being surprised by anything, not shocked by most terrible crimes, nor by the behavior of the partners.

C'era una volta il West
(1968)

the BEST western ever
"wooowwwoohw"... this is what I was thinking after the first hour of the movie... it was when Mr. cayenne said: "so, this kid knows how to shoot as well..." or something...

I wanted to write about this movie ever since I saw it again, after 15 years.

it seems to me absolutely incredible. It is the best western ever. It is a movie about the West. I mean, hello, what was there, in the West? There was the railroad. There was the railroad connecting the East and the West. The Atlantic and the Pacific. On its way, the railroad met characters, various people, and it did not stop. It had a life of its own. Never mind the people, the railroad went westwards (and back). Now, on its way, various dramas were happening. People were dying, people were living. People were killing, people were surviving. The movie catches it all. The railway is unstoppable. And on its way, it met Charles Bronson, and Henry Fonda (their characters, I mean). They were not the main actors in this railroad trip, but they left their mark on it. And the railway went on.

Lansky
(1999)

So, what does actually tell this movie?!
To put it in a few words: not enough real facts, not deep psychological analysis of the characters. The only good thing about the movie is the acting. But it does not make it for the movie length...

After seeing the trailer, I waited the movie with very high expectations. I mean, hello, this was a movie about Meyer Lansky, the brain behind the Syndicate, one of the most influent mob leaders ever. An ocean of opportunities... And, what did I get for the two hours spent in front of the TV? just a big mark of question: "what did it want from me?!" There was not the rush and the fascinating action from "goodfellas" or "casino", nor the sympathetic romantic retrospective from "bugsy", and it was far from stories like "once upon a time in America". The biography is romanced and extremely brief. If you do not know the real life of Lansky, for sure you will not understand too many things from this movie. If you know it, you will be disappointed. And if the intention was to analyze the feelings and emotions of the character, well then, it didn't do it deep enough.

Serving Sara
(2002)

Uninteresting and predictable plot, combined with poor feminine acting
1 hr 35 minutes of boredom... scenes forced into the screenplay (as the one when the male character lends a hand to an unwillingly bull)... beautiful Liz, but she remains a model rather than an actress, thing which is more than easy to remark in this movie, where she keeps smiling no matter what is going on...
