Ayoade has a fantastic way of creating ambiance I love Ayoade as a comedy actor and person, but definitely also as a director.
This film had an amazing ambiance. Visuals and set/prop design are a big part of this. Like in a Wes Anderson or early J.P. Jeunet movie.
Time and location remain unclear. It has elements from the seventies, but could also be a dystopian future, or some parallel universe.
Eisenberg is perfectly cast with his awkward posture and empty gaze, while at the same time pulling off a credible Double. A lot of the other roles are left intentionally one-dimensional, and almost every one at the work place is old, except the main character, the girl, and the Double.
The story is rather psychological and - I thought - Kafkaesque. I did not find out it was based on a Dostoyevsky novel until the credits.
To me, the visuals, acting, characters and story all came together perfectly. I think it deserves more than it's getting now: 8/10.
