Dunkirk
(2017)

A Failed Experiment
This latest Christopher Nolan film is about the evacuation of soldiers stuck at Dunkirk in second world war. Usually Nolan films contain deep and complicated story structures but this time he is telling you a straight story about survival. As an audience, what you expect from a war film in modern era since we have seen so many great war based films before is a certain level of freshness in story or in it's presentation. As a clever auteur that he is, Nolan knows that he is responsible for this. So what he tried to do here is that he made a war movie and immerse the audience in this experience. But the verdict is, it still fails bring something new. The non linear presentation is the major drawback for the lack of focus which results in the failure of such an immersive experience. Its shame that the whole film feels repetitive and unfocused since the opening scenes with less dialogue and more action was promising. Film starts its decline with a side story in a boat with a stranded soldier and the boat owners. And then it never recovers.

Recommended watch instead of Dunkirk: Son of Saul

Thondimuthalum Dhriksakshiyum
(2017)

The beauty of reality
Thondimuthalum driksakshiyum is one of the best malayalam movies made in recent years that is successful because of its brilliant script and poignant performances from the entire cast. This film is extremely realistic and builds upon situations that we come across in our daily life. The characters are very well-written and well- acted that they stay with us even after the movie ends. Biggest credit must go to Fahadh Faasil for yet another superb performance which is one of the best in his career and the way he changes our view of his character at different points in the story is just wonderful. Suraj Venjarammood shines in a very serious role and proves yet again that he deserves more serious roles like this. The debutant Nimisha Sajayan has also done justice to her character. What made Dileesh Pothan's first film "Maheshinte Prathikaram" successful was the way humour was managed in that movie without any kind of artificiality. That kind of Basheerian humour which arises out of realistic scenarios and without any kind of gimmick is again seen here which makes this film very entertaining. The focus of the script and the intensity is never lost in any part of the film thanks to Pothan. He must also deserve credit for the way so many new actors are used in the police station scenes and the acting by Alencier and other policemen are extremely natural. The script written by Sajeev Pazhoor is tight and never loses focus at any point in the movie. In fact one of the best things about this film is the use of very short dialogues in some crucial scenes which reveals so much about the characters and their motives without useless blabber. I rate this film 10/10 & hoping for more good realistic films like this rather than over-hyped masala movies.

M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story
(2016)

Unnecessarily overlong
M.S.Dhoni: The Untold Story is a film like many other bollywood films which has a promising first half and becomes disappointing in the second half. Its almost like we are watching 2 films before and after intermission. The first half is extremely well made which shows the hardships Dhoni had to face in getting selected to the Indian team. Sushant Singh Rajput does really well in presenting the character's determination as well as his frustrations in his journey in becoming a successful cricketer. I guess these parts really shows the dark side of being a sportsman in our country. The compromises one has to make in following your passions. It's only after the intermission that the film gets tedious and boring with nothing much to tell about what the character is going through besides his 2 love affairs. It's sad that the writing gets poor in the second half that even Rajput's potential is not utilized as well as in the early portions of the movie. My rating is 6/10

Oppam
(2016)

Nothing new here
Oppam is a mediocre thriller film which might seem better compared to the other recent efforts from Priyadarshan. The film has nothing new to offer because of a predictable script and it's certainly not one of the best roles in Mohanlal's career. The film has a first half which has an uneven tone because of forced cliché-filled-family-scenes and other scenes which sets the thriller story. Because of some lousy writing and casting choices in the first half of the film, I expected the second half to be similar but it wasn't. Second half of the film saves the day with some good thrilling moments and great camera work. The final scenes had some "Shining" references which I enjoyed and the songs were quite good. Good acing by the child artist and she had good chemistry with Mohanlal. This is not a must watch film by any means so I rate this one five out of ten stars.

Jacobinte Swargarajyam
(2016)

Poor presentation of a real story with potential
I went to watch this film with high expectations since it was directed by Vineeth and stars Nivin. But just after the first 30 minutes, I could see I was in for a disappointment. The main problem seems to be that the script is written in a hurry and most of this film had unnecessary scenes and dialogues. Average acting from Renji Panicker and Nivin Pauly and most of the actors makes you wonder when will this end. It is also the reason that we never feel like we have to care for this characters. The rare scenes with good humor entertained me and I felt that Vineeth is better at making comedy-oriented films and he must focus on his that talent rather than trying to be too serious.
