Wonder Woman 1984
(2020)

Pointless and ridiculous
I enjoyed the first Wonder Woman movie and was hopeful this would be as good, or better than the first, especially as the wait has been longer than expected for its release. However this was a pointless waste of time and money. The storyline involving Pedro Pascal was ridiculous (and after his recent efforts, he certainly hasn't redeemed himself here). Kristen Wiig is miscast as Barbara / Cheetah. Surely they could have found someone better for this role. The only person involved in this who can hold their heads up is Chris Pine - the rest of the cast and production / writing / direction team should refund their pay cheques for this trash. Don't waste your money.

American Assassin
(2017)

Nowhere near as bad as other reviews say.....
Sure, it's a little formulaic, and it's not going to win any Oscars, but for movies of its type it's quite well done. It's well paced, and the cast (among them Dylan O'Brien, Michael Keaton, Taylor Kitsch) do a good job with the material. Well worth a look.......

Spies of Warsaw
(2013)

Poorly executed spy drama
Why do they have to tinker with a great story? Alan Furst's novel is moody, atmospheric and evocative of the period, pre-WW2 Warsaw. The BBC adaptation is lifeless and sterile. The screenwriters have tried to cherry-pick the salient parts of the novel, but all this has achieved is a confusing storyline with no sense of continuity. David Tennant is hopelessly miscast as Mercier, which in turn ensures the viewer will find the series pretty unbelievable. Janet Montgomery's portrayal of Anna Szarbek(Skarbek? Why?) is unfortunately not very likable, which in turn means their relationship suffers on the screen. Both Tennant and Montgomery have mishandled the relationship between Mercier and Szarbek, which is one of the critical drivers of Mercier's actions. A number of other characters (Jourdain, Dr Lapp) have been similarly poorly written and portrayed. Very disappointing all round. I just hope they don't try and adapt any more of Alan Furst's novels - fans of Furst's novels will be very disheartened.

Argo
(2012)

Award Wins are justified
This is an enthralling movie from the outset. Through the clever use of light, sound and period clothing, vehicles, etc, Argo evokes the period beautifully. The recreation of 1970s LA and Teheran is well done and completely believable. Knowing how this incident ends does not detract from the carefully built suspense as Argo draws to a conclusion. The cast in this movie is superb. Ben Affleck deserves a special mention for both his acting and his direction - he just keeps getting better. Thoroughly deserving of the awards won so far - let's hope Argo wins the Best Picture Oscar as it is far superior to all other nominees in the category.

Silver Linings Playbook
(2012)

Waste of 2 hours of my life
I want to send an invoice to the director for reimbursement of the rental cost. This movie is full of overblown and superficial characters, none of which the viewer can engage with or empathise with. Whether this is the fault of the scriptwriter, director or the actors themselves is not clear. What is clear is the movie's awards nominations to date are not the least bit justified. Whilst I applaud the subject matter and the attempt to convey a message to the greater audience about the dilemmas of having a family member dealing with mental illness, there is no doubt there are far superior movies already available covering this topic.

The Newsroom
(2012)

Finally, a brilliant adult drama
Just watched the last episode here in Australia....cannot believe it was only 10 episodes!! While I agree with some reviews that there should have been more emphasis on the news gathering process, you cannot help but admire Aaron Sorkin's writing. Some of the cleverest dialogue I have heard in years. Australia sees enough of the coverage of American politics, especially the presidential race, to follow each episode without being in the dark about the events being covered, in addition to the international stories such as the shooting of Bin Laden. There's no doubt the running theme of news vs commercial interests rings true with viewers around the world; it's certainly evident in Australian media. Hurry up and bring Season 2 to Australia !
