Dinner for Schmucks
(2010)

Great cast. Poor story. Watch the French original.
Do yourself a favour and just watch the French original Diner de Cons. This adaptation completely misses the point and turns Rudd into a likeable guy and Carrell isn't such a "schmuck". Which in turn weakens the whole point of the farce. Sadly something we see US cinema do over and over again. I wonder if this had been made in 2020 by Netflix a few more risks would have been taken.

The casting is an impressive list of names. And their performances pretty flawless. It's not their fault the story and script isn't up to scratch. The film was made at critical times in their careers, so I'm doubting they challenged it.

Standouts in the supporting cast are Lucy Punch and Jemaine Clement. Walliams isn't bad either, his usual self but without the overacting. Zach Galifianakis is Zach Galifianakis (yawn in 2020 but probably not at the time).

It's watchable. But don't have high hopes for laughs or wit. Like I said, watch the original.

Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker
(2019)

A people pleaser
It's disjointed and rushed in places but still has the Star Wars elements fans love to see. It's inoffensive and respectable but not going to ever make us feel the way we did with Empire or even when this reboot was announced. It's well worth a cinema ticket though. There's enough twists and turns to keep you going with the story. But overall a missed opportunity.

Rogue One
(2016)

A missed opportunity
I'm reviewing this against my expectations based on what I think the story could have been like. Firstly, let's just say, this film has been produced to a high standard delivering the well-loved format of the Star Wars franchise, a similar calibre to The Force Awakens. The casting is excellent, the visual effects eye-wateringly beautiful.

However, it's quite clear Disney have compromised the potential edge this story could have had, to cash in on massive audiences. I would have loved this story to be told as an intergalactic spy thriller rather than a Rebellion caper. The script was fine but rather predictable and corny. The story didn't have enough intrigue or twists for my liking.

This is a film for a new generation of fans but the old generation like me are gonna get a bit sick of being fed the same showmanship instead of progressive sci-fi action drama.

I'm a devoted Star Wars fan but if the franchise continues to churn in this direction, the Star Trek reboots are looking much, much classier.

Man About Town
(2006)

Sweet story if a little far fetched
This is one of those movies perfect for a lazy weekend afternoon. There's no point watching it if you don't like romantic drama, it won't be for you. The story pootles along with charming scenes to do with self-discovery and relationships. I wasn't completely convinced of all the characters' motivation, it was a bit *Hollywood* with the artistic license. It is far fetched but that is for comic effect I should image. It's not laugh out loud funny, just absurd and farcical. The performances are solid, I think they save the shaky storyline somewhat. Ben Affleck is good in these thoughtful roles, don't agree with other reviewers on this. He's much less corny than most of his contemporaries in these kind of films. Cleese stole his scenes, pure class and not overly wacky. I did enjoy the soundtrack, it wasn't the usual upbeat pop-rock rubbish that 'quirky' romcoms are stuffed with these days. You won't waste an afternoon watching this with a cuppa while nursing a hangover.
