Lootere
(2024)

What a Botched-Up Hijack Attempt !
Lootere embarks with a flourish of excitement and promise, capturing your interest right from the start. However, the charm quickly diminishes as the series progresses beyond episode three. This decline in appeal is courtesy an overabundance of story elements and a poorly strategized release schedule of one episode per week.

The show's pacing becomes erratic, leaving the narrative feeling disjointed and hard to follow. Instead of focusing on a cohesive plot, the series loses itself in a maze of too many characters and superfluous subplots. One particularly uninteresting storyline involves Vivek Gomber's character's wife and the annoying son as she searches for a boy who is friends with her son. This subplot not only feels unnecessary but also lacks believability, further detracted by the characters' irritating portrayals.

Despite these narrative missteps, the series does boast some strong performances. The acting prowess of the cast, particularly the ever-reliable Rajat Kapoor, shines through, albeit they are let down by a lackluster script that fails to support their talents and is wasted. Vivek Gomber, however, does not seem to fit well in his role, which may be more a reflection of the script's shortcomings than his acting abilities.

By the time episode six rolls around, any initial enthusiasm has turned into exhaustion and annoyance. The momentum necessary to sustain interest in a weekly episodic release just isn't there. The series had the potential to be a gripping heist drama but instead feels like a hijack gone wrong-too many elements pulling in different directions without arriving anywhere satisfying.

Pippa
(2023)

A Refreshingly Subtle Take on war !
"Pippa," stands out as a refreshingly understated entry in a genre typically known for its boisterous patriotism, especially within Bollywood. The film, anchored on the life story of Balram Singh Mehta, delves into the crucial role of the amphibious battle tank-aptly named 'Pippa' (a Punjabi word for a tin can that floats)-in the pivotal battles of 1971. Unlike many of its counterparts, "Pippa" eschews the usual jingoism, opting instead for a more nuanced approach to storytelling.

The narrative, admittedly slow to ignite, eventually finds its footing, drawing the audience into the thick of the action. Ishaan Khatter, portraying the main protagonist Balram Singh Mehta, delivers a remarkably measured performance, striking a balance between intensity and restraint. His portrayal underscores the character's evolution through the tribulations of war, a journey of maturation and transformation that is both compelling and convincing.

Supporting performances add depth to the narrative, with Mrunal Thakur and Soni Razdan offering strong turns as Mehta's sister and mother, respectively. Priyanshu Painyuli, initially rigid in his role as Balram's strict brother Ram, eventually finds his groove, contributing to the film's emotional depth.

Visually, "Pippa" impresses with some stunning tank sequences, showcasing a commendable level of technical prowess. The film's real auditory triumph, however, lies in its music and background score by the legendary A. R. Rahman, whose compositions elevate the film's mood and energy, keeping the "josh" (spirit) high.

A notable surprise is the performance of Kamal Sadanah, who steps into the shoes of the legendary Sam Manekshaw with a finesse that belies his time away from the spotlight. His portrayal adds a layer of authenticity and gravitas to the film.

However, "Pippa" is not without its imperfections. The script shows signs of looseness, particularly in the initial segments, and the VFX, crucial for a war movie, occasionally falls short of expectations, detracting from the film's overall impact.

In conclusion, while "Pippa" may have benefited from a grander release on the big screen, it remains a worthy watch. It tells a story that needed to be told, doing so with a subtlety and sensitivity that sets it apart from typical Bollywood war dramas. Its few flaws aside, "Pippa" is a commendable effort that contributes meaningfully to the Indian war film genre.

Gaslight
(2023)

Tedious and boring watch !
Here's a thriller that never grips or thrills. From the first frame to the last this movies is mired in boredom and half away through you just want this to end and whatever little twists that come in the end hardly surprise you.

The story is about this princess played by Sara who is coming home to meet her father after ages and is welcomed by her step mom (Chitrangada) and the manager (Massey). But the father is no where to seen and her quest to figure out where he is begins. There is this distant annoying cousin, a police SP with some jump scare scenes to get your attention but unfortunately neither of the characters and scenes engage with you. And as mentioned above by the time the mystery is solved you hardly bother and just want this stupidity to end. The story and screenplay have no depth and direction is super weak.

Performances wise Massey does well along with Chitrangada who looks stunning in some scenes and emotes well. Sara as the main protagonist is completely bland and has nothing much to offer in this not so well written character.

So overall an avoidable fare ! Thank good they have not chosen the theatre route for this one or perhaps they knew.

Moving in with Malaika
(2022)

Avoid this fake as hell show!
Here are few things I can suggest you do you can see rather than watching this piece of garbage-

1. Watch paint dry 2. Watch your nails grow 3 Watch ants carry sugar

Trust me that would be more interesting.this is a painful watch, horribly scripted & layered with stupidity. I saw 4 episodes just see if there was any hope after the dreadful first episode which features hamming Farrah Khan and over dramatic Malaika who is super obsessed with herself and keeps repeating herself through all 4 episodes. The whole show is about her PR team trying to sell her divorce and her dating choice and help her play a victim card. That's the theme that keeps repeating itself right from first episode to that so called stand up which is unfunny as hell. And it seems like Divorce and dating Arjun are her only talents given how she is trying to milk them.

If you really like Malaika better follow her on Instagram and be happy watching all the paparazzi shots at least that way you would have some respect for her.

Cuttputlli
(2022)

Half Baked thriller!
The plot is interesting to start with.. serial killer loose in small towns of picturesque Himachal Pradesh and Police team led by Akshay Kumar in pursuit but unfortunately by the time his identity is revealed you have lost most of the interest in it.

Every thing about this movie is half baked, right from the character development, screenplay to production value which I must say is quite shoddy for a Akshay Kumar movie. They had an interesting plot but the makers just got satisfied with that and didn't bother to care much after that. It has some interesting sequences but never really grips you as a thriller should.

Akshay looks misfit for the role, looks quite old for the character and can't salvage this one with his acting chops. Rakul is average and Ghuggi is completely wasted. Chandrachud Singh in his limited role does act well though.

Overall it's a very average and dull effort at making a thriller.

Good Luck Jerry
(2022)

It's a confused mess!!
There are movies you finish and wonder why the hell was this even made, and Good Luck Jerry is one such movie.

The director has squandered a great opportunity given the kind of actors and the plot he had at his disposal. The script and direction is clueless and at most times annoying barring some decent situations in the first half. Can't believe Anand Rai backed this joke of a movie..

The performances by the cast is terrible despite the presence of some great character actors like Deepak Dhobriyal, Sushant and Mita Vasishth as they have been given such a mess of a script. Jhanvi tries hard but can't make this work.. even her mom the late legend Sridevi wouldn't have been able to make this work so cannot blame her much.

Avoid as this movie is not even a decent time pass !!

Inventing Anna
(2022)

Interesting subject but flawed narrative
There are some series you dive into with so much hope but in the end you feel a bit short changed, this is one such series for me.

The subject of the series is fabulous but the attempt to create sympathy for the fraudster with no remorse is deeply flawed. Let's be clear Anna was a bully, fraud and obnoxious but quite an interesting subject and it feels like the makers got conned by her as well. The series has major issues with pace and at times gets annoying and boring.

In terms of performances, Julia Garner is just phenomenal and part of the reason why this series is watchable. She has nailed the accent, body language to perfection. Anna Chlumsky tries too hard and is over the top and borderline annoying in the role of the journalist. She rolls her eyes too much, her gestures and dialogue delivery make her look like a lunatic at times, the saving grace are the other journalists in her "scriberia" group who bring some life to the proceedings. Else I wouldn't have lasted beyond episode 4. Another huge flaw is the way the character of Rachel has been portrayed and the difference in the appearance of the real Rachel and reel Rachel is too stark compared to others and looks like a deliberate attempt to discredit her.

Overall, it's a story which is really compelling but unfortunately the series isn't. But you can watch it for Julia Garner though.

Love Hostel
(2022)

A raw and effective thriller
Set against the khap panchayat versus inter religion marriages the movie sets the pace from the very first frame and maintains it till the very end

Bobby Deol is the cold blooded executer of the Khap Panchayat orders who doesn't blink an eye lid to pull a trigger is after a Jat-Muslim couple played by Vikrant Massey and Sanya Malhotra who have eloped and got married. This is majorly is the plot of the movie.

The movie keeps things raw, real and unapologetic. It doesn't fall into the typical Bollywood traps and that's what makes it different from the rest of the movies made on this subject. You might be reminded of Love Sex and Dhokha though on occasions which tackled a similar subject. It will shock you on occasions and even make you uncomfortable which a movie on such subject should.

The direction is mostly good and doesn't slip much. Performances wise Vikrant is reliable as always and Sanya is average. Her character is a bit half baked compared to others and that hampers her performance. But the star of the show is Bobby Deol who delivers a knockout performance as the cold blooded killer and you would like to see more of him on screen.

It's definitely not a masterpiece but a good watch. Don't expect a typical Bollywood thriller though.

36 Farmhouse
(2022)

It's a terrible excuse of a movie !
The movie is just way too painful to watch and what is more painful is the fact that it's a movie written and produced by Subhash Ghai - he is the music director and lyrics writer as well btw. And he fails miserably in all departments!

The movie has a great cast but all are wasted courtesy dated and stale writing and direction. So please avoid at any cost... if you are a Subhash Ghai fan, better watch one of his pre-Yaadein movies. And if you know Subhash Ghai by any chance please ask him to retire gracefully.

Human
(2022)

Opportunity wasted..
The series had a lot going for it with a great concept but it loses its way in the subplots. The series is a drag and what could have been a great show ends up being a mediocre fare.

Shefali is just brilliant but Kriti's performance is very inconsistent and is at times annoying. About time she stops taking up roles where she is crying or confused, we have seen her in many such roles over the years.

Wish they had concentrated on the great main plot and not got lost in the characters!

Atrangi Re
(2021)

An Atrangi yet interesting watch
Here is a Bollywood movie which tries to stay away from the beaten path but does so without losing the grip and the result is a nice feel good movie. The concept of the movie is unique with a very interesting twist.

The performances from the all actors especially Dhanush lift the movie Sara plays a very complex character and at times looks out of depth but manages well overall. Akshay is dependable as usual despite a smaller role. The screenplay and direction is good too as the movie doesn't drag much.

And one thing that gives the soul to the movie is the music by A R Rahman. The maestro is in top form here and delivers an outstanding soundtrack that gives the movie a great flavour.

Overall it's a good movie worth a watch.

The Big Bull
(2021)

Comparisons or no comparisons .. this is pure trash!
Yes, the movies does suffer from the fact that a brilliant series got released on the same theme and it's tough to watch the movie without comparisons but even you don't compare the movie with anything, you would find it it tough to like this problematic at its core movie.

The screenplay to start with is laughable as on one hand they show the protagonist laughing hysterically like a 80s villain on several occasions in the movie to show his greed and on the other hand they project him like a messiah who uplifted people from poverty and a victim of the system with no mention of people who lost lives and livelihoods when the market crashed from the artificial heights he had taken it to.

The treatment is extremely problematic as it tries to undermine the progress country made in its first 40 years of independence and in a way glorifies a man's wrongdoings. They want to show that Harshad Mehta was the best thing that ever happened to Indian economy post independence.

The performances are nothing to write home about either. Abhishek never holds his character and is extremely inconsistent in his delivery. He hardly acts and looks the part. As he is almost in every scene doesn't allow anyone else any chance to shine either. Seasoned actors such as Saurabh Shukla, Supriya Pathak are completely wasted.

Avoid and save your 2 and a half hours. If you are really interested in life and times of Harshad Mehta, then watch the series. This is pure and problematic garbage.

I Care a Lot
(2020)

Half baked movie... half good - half plain silly
This movie has invited contrasting reactions - either people have loved it or absolutely hated it, well I kind of also lean towards the later group. The first word is that its a bad film but the movie raises a very important issue of the care giver scam prevalent in some places.

The movie starts of very well and the first one hour is quite gripping, but once the premise has been established and you are expectations are up, it just goes downhill. The last hour is plain ridiculous and a bit annoying to be honest. The movie evokes zero sympathies for the main protagonist and builds her up as this larger than life figure who kind of excels in all kind of stuff whether brainy and brawny.

Rosamund Pike, Peter Dinklage, Eiza González have all acted well and one of the reasons I could complete the film but the script of the second half is so badly written that even such talented actors are not able to salvage it.

Thackeray
(2019)

Poorly made.. and at times incoherent
Even if it was made to glorify Thackarey, it does a poor job at doing that as well. The movie lacks any direction and at times is very amateurishly edited.

The script is poorly written and direction is even worse. It's at best a montage of certain events. Nawazuddin does well but it's not good enough to save this poor effort.

Raat Akeli Hai
(2020)

Good onetime watch but slightly stretched
The movie has all the makings of an Indian version of Knives out but is marred by its runtime. Murder in a mansion and all house dwellers are suspect including the mistress about to become wife played by Radhika Apte.

The movie starts of well and is gripping to start with but it meanders a bit in the middle before hitting the right note in the end. Performance of the cast is great but the dialogues, script and editing lets them down a shade. This movie could have been atleast 20 minutes shorter.

Overall a decent one time watch.

Dil Bechara
(2020)

If you keep the emotions aside it's an average movie
Great music and some good moments save this movie from being a complete bore. Sushant does well in what will be his last onscreen performance but Sanjana is dull and at times awkward. There is hardly any chemistry between the lead pair and that effects the movie considerably. Saif is clearly a good surprise and lights up the screen for the 2 minutes he is on screen. Ending is way too abrupt and editing fairly shoddy. Very few dialogues connect with you. So overall an average fare.

An Appeal- I respect everyone's emotions but let's not kill the sanctity of this platform. Let's rate movies genuinely here. It's a rating website not a tribute site and let's keep it that way. Thanks.

Special OPS
(2020)

Great series, must watch.
If you like watching international crime / terror thrillers then this should be on your list. Well directed and scripted, it has a good mix of thrill, suspense, and emotions. Captures the world of spies along with politics and bureaucracy that comes with it.

Performances from the cast especially from the ever reliable KK Menon are very good. He is the soul of the series and is ably supported by likes of Vinay Pathak. It was also nice to Gautami after a long time and she excelled in here role.

Good binge watch.

365 dni
(2020)

If you are looking for a story or logic look somewhere else !
Tough to write about a movie that offers nothing in terms of a storyline or plot. The screenplay of this movie must be only 2-3 pages long. It does have good looking actors, some decent erotic sequences, great locales, and good background music but nothing beyond that.

If eroticas with no logic are your cup of tea then you can waste 2 hours here else watch something else.

Choked
(2020)

A film that goes no where! Avoidable.
The movie starts off well with an intriguing portrayal of a middle class family in Mumbai who live with their son and are fighting their past when wife had choked infront of a life audience ruining their promising music career coupled with this mysterious neighbour who wraps the currency notes in plastic and hides them in the drain, giving you hope that this might be a good ride.

But the over indulgence of Anurag Kashyap comes to the fore here as the story literally crawls and keeps going in circles after this start. It takes ages while capturing the husband's frustrations, the nosey and manipulative neighbours, Wife's struggles etc.

When the demonetization angle emerges you get hope once again but alas ! It's a short lived hope as the story goes nowhere again plus it looks like everyone including the director lost interest at this stage. The sequences are either dull or plain silly.

In the acting department Saiyami Kher and Amruta Subhash start well but as the movie progresses become they become very repetitive. Roshan Mathew looks sleepy and listless throughout the movie.

Don't go by the director's name and waste your time. It's Anurag's worst effort after Bombay velvet. There were some promising elements in the story like the wife getting the money, demonetization, Amruta Subhash's character but he fails to make anything out of them.

This ride is dull, boring and goes nowhere. Avoid.

Malang - Unleash the Madness
(2020)

An opportunity missed but a decent one time watch.
An Ex-convict is out killing policemen a night before Christmas in Goa but why ? This is the basic premise of the movie. As its a suspense thriller, revealing too much would be wrong.

This movie is literally a story of two halves, the first is a bit slow and predictable but the second surely packs a punch and makes this film a watchable fare. This could have been a better romantic thriller had the lead pair shown a bit more chemistry. Aditya Roy Kapoor is dependable but Disha Patani has a long way to go in the acting department. She looks good but is out of depth in almost all the scenes when it comes to emoting. She hardly shows any intention to act and literally ruins some potentially good scenes.

The best performerer and literally the soul of the film is Anil Kapoor. He digs his teeth into this meaty role and is clearly having fun with it on the screen. And the runners up in the performance department is Kunal Khemu. He has limited screen time but makes the most of it.

If you don't go in with too many expectations, this is a decent one time watch.

Betaal
(2020)

A complete mess - Give it a miss.
This is a completely botched up affair.

The premise of an old East India regiment becoming zombies coming out and attacking a battalion of CIPD (modelled on CRPF) in 2020 is surely intriguing but the execution is plain boring and at times annoying.

The cast had some promise but they all looked completely bored and disinterested with this outing and none of them leave a mark. The screenplay and direction is completely hopeless. This could have been an interesting 1 and a half hour movie with a better director and cast at helm. There are sequences which could have made for good horror and thrill but the director's lack of imagination has killed them all.

I started watching it because of a big production house like Red chillies backing it but was startled with the shoddy production values. The zombies look laughable.

I know some of us have extra time on hand due to COVID lockdown but this is not even worth that time.

Paatal Lok
(2020)

A good socio-political series - Must watch
Story details - A cop considered average by his bosses and peers gets assigned a high profile case and he makes solving it his life's mission, come what may. The series beautifully explores his life of an underachiever who lives with his loving and gullible wife and rebellious son with who he struggles to connect and earn respect. The other main characters are his fellow policemen (Ansari), bosses, the suspects who have been arrested for planning the murder of a top journalist (brilliantly played by Neeraj Kabi). How he solves this complex high profile case, the social and political games he gets caught in, and how the supposed victim exploits this situation to his advantage form the series.

What's good -Great acting by everyone, special mention for Ahalwat who literally lives this roleGood plot and directionPresents a fairly balanced view of the social and political scene of the country without taking sidesNo open ending !! What's notThe plot in Chitrakoot not exploited fully.Editing could have been betterLacks pace and thrill at times Overall -It's a very well made series which surely deserves a watch. If you enjoy socio-political series, this should be on your watch list.

White Lines
(2020)

Slightly over indulgent.
The series starts off well with a sister's quest of finding the killer of her long dead brother. The first 3 episodes set the tone beautifully with some interesting characters and how she starts to understand what her brother was and how he had influenced so many lives. And how he was a fairly hated character and could have been knocked off by a lot of people. Her discovery about various facets about herself in Ibiza is well captured but sometimes you feel it's a bit too much and she comes across as too stupid at times. What mars this series are way too many subplots which do not help the narrative and make you a bit restless. This should've been wrapped in 7-8 episodes rather ten. Still a good watch. Well shot and has some deep messages that stay with you.

Dabangg 3
(2019)

Stale and boring !
Dabbang3 is a serious example of taking the audience for granted. The movie is as unoriginal, boring and stale as it can get with done to death sequences for Salman (entry with a bang,munni-munna song, and shirtless climax),terrible songs, and horrible acting - special mention Sonakshi. It offers nothing new it terms of its storyline and barring a few scenes where Kiccha Sudeep infuses some energy to the movie. It is unbelievably boring. If you love Chulbul Pandey, just watch Dabbang 1 and 2 and stay away from this one. About time Mr Pandey calls it a day and Salman comes up with something fresh. Well, we can just hope !!
