The Rental
(2020)

Unoriginal and unfortunately Predictable
The cast caught my eye when I first came across the title. And I foolishly thought maybe this would be a fresh take on the 'vacation' thriller setting. Unfortunately it was not worth the time.

*spoiler* Luckily the dog made it, so that was nice.

Titane
(2021)

Wacky. Loving family relationships but with murder and cars added in
A wild wild ride (pun intended). Great acting all around. Storyline is bizarre but is so captivating. True work of art and wonderful character development surprises.

The Starling
(2021)

Animals are a Reflection of the Soul
Melissa McCarthy plays a zoned out wife of husband, Jack (Chris O'Dowd) who appears to be ill. The tough love, feel good film directed by Theodore Melfi, touches on the inherent vulnerability of trusting someone. Love is fickle and hard work, especially with added uncontrolable pressures. Easy to watch and possibly even cry to. A great change in pace for comedians, Melissa and Chris.

Nakitai watashi wa neko o kaburu
(2020)

Stalking Is OK When You're A Cat
The protagonist is a bubbly and goofy middle school girl. Her love interest is aloof and expresses that he's not interested. However through a turn of events hidden emotions begin to reveal themselves. The animation and artwork is stunning, along with the characterizations of the cats. Great for any animal lover (including furries). Storyline is wacky so I can't give it more than 3/10 but the animation pulls it up to 4/10.

Young Ones
(2014)

Also named, Bad Land: Road to Fury
The clothing and equipment make the timeline vague and open to many interpretations. The acting was great and showed a lot of the emotional character development for the main characters. However Elle Fanning's acting and Nicholas Holt's feels flat and makes the conclusion of the film unsatisfactory.

Right at Your Door
(2006)

Intimate Fear
While the science behind the plot is a little outrageous... the focus on the characters reflects the high quality of the script, acting, and directing. It was compelling to see the struggles and sacrifices each character made. Definitely worth a watch, especially if you're in dystopian/science fiction/thrillers.

What Lies Below
(2020)

Don't be fooled by Abs
The movie is held together using fishing wire and the lure of hot abs. Give it some points for acting efforts.

The Last Thing He Wanted
(2020)

Top Name Actors Trying to Bank on Netflix Checks
Journalistic mystery type film set in the 80s. Styled like early 2000's journalistic films, but lacks the clarity and believability. There is little to no background on the scenarios the film depicts making the film incredibly disjointed. Final wrap up gave some closure, so if you want to watch the first 5 minutes, jump to the middle 10 minutes, then close with the last 3 minutes, you get the same movie.

Hard Kill
(2020)

Absolute Trash
Terrible acting. Terrible plot. Terrible movie logic. One of the biggest wastes of time I've ever watched. If possible watch at 3x speed and the movement of the actors might be interesting enough to consider. But in reality, don't waste your time.

These actor signed on, cashed their checks and left this sorry movie. You should leave too.

1BR
(2019)

Consistent Hessitation, Rapid Escalation
The film starts matching the title, a woman goes to check out a 1 bedroom apartment in this co-operative looking/style of housing. Weird things start happening and soon the story takes a rapid turn.

The movie is fast paced and plays with your psyche, making you question how far the lead actress is willing to go.

The movie fulfills it's job of a thriller movie and does a bit more by having the audience question how far are they willing to go to survive. Some of the plotline is lacking and has potholes - like where did her Dad go after he stormed off? Definitely 1BR could set up for a sequel based on how it ended. Or just take the ending as is. Up to you.

I'm Thinking of Ending Things
(2020)

Literature Reference Check
This film stars Jesse Plemons and Jessie Buckley as they visit Jake's (Jesse Plemons) family. The start of the film is lead by a monologue delivered by Jessie Buckley and we meet Jake. The film takes us through a convoluted journey but is always cinematically pleasant. The score is evenly paced and matches the tone.

Unlimited references to literary works throughout. I suppose if I'd done more reading in English class maybe I would have understood more of the movie... The feelings it evokes mirror that of Mother! (2017, Darren Aronofsky).

Get ready to dive into something that will be on your mind for days after watching it.

Primal
(2019)

Touching.Inspiring Ambiance
Primal is a no-dialogue show. Incredibly immersive and paints a vivid picture of a fictional life in the dinosaur age. We follow the rare connection between caveman and dinosaur. Multi-layered and incredibly animated.

No matter what genre you may like, this show can satisfy it all.

Rise
(2007)

Watch just for Lucy Liu's Acting
The storyline is weak but keeps the film moving. Character development outside of reporter Sadie Blake (Lucy Liu) is dismal. However, the film is saved by the dedication and acting by Lucy Liu and Carla Gugino (Eve).

Worth a watch for a relaxing easy to follow movie on a rainy day.

Jiang hu er nü
(2018)

Beautiful scenery and cinematography.
Ash is Purest White is a tumultuous story of two people who were lovers in a forgone life. After spending 5 years in prison for a man she loves dearly, she is finally released. Qiao (Tao Zhao) is a woman searching in the past for a life that no longer exists. Bin (Fan Liao), a gangster thrust into the role of mob boss, also faced the consequences of having to find a new life once he left prison. Disillusioned by his past gangster life he moved away from Shang Xi. Their return into each other's lives is difficult to navigate and highlights the societal and economic changes in China that has occurred from 2001 to 2006/2007.

Ash is Purest White is a reflective and poignant movie that beams with beautiful, subtle commentary on a changing world.

Knives Out
(2019)

Strong Character Development
Each character was presented in similar fashion initially. The multiple view points from each character made the recounting of the scenes incredibly rich with information. Each actor and actress deliver their roles strongly and with the plot pushes the movie along well. The movie is reminiscent of the game Clue.

Tusk
(2014)

0/10 Strange and not the good kind
Just all sorts of weird in the storyline. And the acting from the friend characters are subpar. The main character doesn't have any emotional depth. Nor do any of the characters actually.
