The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power: Adrift
(2022)
Episode 2, Season 1

So far, quite impressive
Unlike Jackson's LOTR, this story is not linear. There promises to be a lot of things going on.

Realizing that I watched Episode One three times, and yes, I noticed something more each viewing.

I'm now in the 36th minute of Episode Two, on my first.

What I'm pointing out, and what I fully expected, is a lot of information, and a lot to absorb.

I have found a series of essays, on different subjects for the Rings of Power. These gave me much insight of the show.

For example, just from the First episode I rushed to think the the Stranger in the flame was Gandalf, arriving. Wrong.

I do believe for those who will dedicate the time (such as those who are willing to watch the Twelve hours of the Trilogy) there will be much reward.

Though, I'm having a difficult time accepting Elves with short hair.

Megan Is Missing
(2011)

Disturbing, so it's more than scary.
I am not a fan of the blood and guts horror films. Freddy, Jason, Michael, Leatherface.... There is very little imagination. Yes, jump scares, and victim's screaming, lots of blood; big deal.

I much prefer the disturbing films, the ones that keep you up on third night, staring at your ceiling

"Megan" is one such. "The Poughkeepsie Tapes," the Dutch/French version of "The Vanishing," "12 Cameras," "Incident in a Ghostland." All very disturbing films, that if you allow yourself to enter their universe, will bother you.

For example, the last few minutes of "Megan..." Think of what Megan is experiencing; it is horrifying. Think of what Katie in "Paranormal Activity" sees when she runs downstairs to the kitchen: what is there? The investigators in the South Korean film, "Gonjiam," witness some extreme things

Because of John Carpenter's "Prince of Darkness," I cannot go near an abandoned church nor totally trust mirrors. In

Unfortunately, these films almost uniformly get poor reviews. I think it is because viewers have little imagination. So, I keep trying to get the word out, and I hope you can find similar horror.

Money Heist: Korea - Joint Economic Area
(2022)

Just enough different to be very worthwhile.
You must give this version a chance, stick with it as I did, and I feel rewarded and satisfied.

Yes, the first two episodes are are almost the Spanish version's script. I was sorely disappointed that the names were the same; why couldn't there be some originality there? And the characters themselves start out as copies.

Then, things became different. I will not give too many examples but here are just a few.

First, no Angel. There really isn't a version of him here. There is a hardline guy, Cha. He's by the book and is from North Korea, so he's a bit serious and dangerous.

Second, the Professor has already met and shown an interest in Woojin, the lead inspector.

The Monica character is more independently minded.

The police here are a bit more inventive with their actions. There is what I'd term a major change involving an officer and the daughter of the Ambassador.

I will not list the other differences but there are several and they contribute to making this show not a copy of the Spanish version.

So, please give this a chance.

The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover
(1989)

Wonderful
This is on of the rare films which I had to see a couple of times to decide on. It is a visual delight, as there is something to see in every scene, from the foreground to the deep background. I've not seen it in years, not finding it on Netflix or other sources. Then, I discovered it on, of all places, Peacock, the NBC streaming service. I was deeply delighted to find it again.

I don't have the words of a film critic to define why I love this so much. I can say is that this is the genesis of my love for Helen Mirren. I was not aware of Michael Gambon again till Harry Potter.

I will be making up for lost time in several viewings.

Outlander: Famous Last Words
(2020)
Episode 8, Season 5

No matter what...
I've been with the show since the second season and I watched every episode several times. I'm currently halfway through "A Breath of Snow and Ashes."

This episode is fascinating; watching Roger start to return, as he does, is so bitter sweet. Ms Gabaldon has put him through some toughness when he returned to find Bree.

A side note, if Mr Moore is reading this: Please have a off shoot with Lord John. I've read the books and he is a wonderfully complicated character.

Red Sparrow
(2018)

The movie is good, the book is better
My first thought was how far Jennifer Lawrence has come since Winter's Bone, one of my favorite films.

Others here have said so much about this movie. I would like to take a moment to speak about the book and its author, Jason Matthews. I try to find the source material for movies, and often I find the book to be as good as the movie.

However, Matthews' writing, his word craft, far exceeds the movie. The plot of the film (adapted for the screenplay) occupies about a fifth of the book. There is so much more: Matthews spent thirty-three years in the CIA and it shows in every paragraph. His career as a "Spook" gives him an authenticity that I've rarely witnessed. This book is a very rewarding read, on a par with La Carre.

Let me put it this way: I normally read three and four books at a time, switching back and forth, enjoying the different plots. "Red Sparrow" has kept me entranced, to the point that it is my only book right now. The good news: Matthews has written a trilogy.

Number is just as good. A wonderfully compelling plot.

Ghostland
(2018)

Easily a "10" or even more.
I rarely write reviews, as I don't easily put words to paper, so I'll be short.

I look for disturbing films. I don't recall how this one was recommended to me but I am quite thankful. At first with the picture of H P Lovecraft I was somewhat expecting an Old Ones tale or even a touch of Cthulhu.

This is what I would refer to as a slasher film, but it is so much more. No reveals, but the second half is amazing. I would like to tell you to not read any reviews (till later) but that is a contradiction I'm putting before you.

Simply, watch this film, enter the family's world and quit clutching the blanket to your chin.

Vikings: Moments of Vision
(2018)
Episode 10, Season 5

It's gotten wordy.
The problem with Ivar is the same with Negan in TWD: too much talking. Hopefully, in the next set of episodes the writers will redeem themselves.
