Zoot Suit
(1981)

A valiant attempt
I also saw the original stage production in LA in 1978/79. I was likely the only Anglo in the audience, which was itself an experience worth buying a ticket to. I would have gone back several times if I had had the money.

Olmos was featured in the local TV commercials for the play and was riveting to watch. That commercial could be re-released as a short. In the theater, you could NOT take your eyes off him.

I have seen the film several times and own a DVD copy. While there are some cringe-worthy moments and some obvious "staginess", the film does credit to the original vision and is worth watching.

One should never watch a work of art in an attempt to learn about history, or science, or anything else. Art is art.

Rock 'n' Roll High School
(1979)

Insider perspective
I was an extra on this shoot in 1979. I cannot confirm IMDb's location information. We shot the scenes I was in in an abandoned Catholic high school in Watts. Some German order of brothers. Fascinating to sit during breaks in filming and read the old yearbooks form the 1930's featuring the "Anti-Communist Club."

Comments about how old PJ Soles was/looked are appropriate. I was 28 at the time and the AD could not decide whether to use me as a parent or a student. Decided on student.

Only the cast and extras of that age even knew who Ramones were. The actual high school kids they rented (the football team and cheerleaders) had no idea who Ramones were or what kind of music they played.

Great thrill to be in the scene where they blow up a high school. I was not so far away from my own high school days.
