The Wicker Man
(2006)

So awful, I should have asked for my $10 back
Admittedly, I never saw the original, nor did I read the short story. So, I walked into the theatre having zero idea of the plot.

So, the story line, in hindsight, had possibilities, for sure. But the acting consisted of 90 minutes or so of overacting. N. Cage must have been bribed into playing the part and his overacting was his way of getting back at the producer. Not one actor did a credible job.

Was this a horror story? I wasn't shocked even once, nor did I gasp at all (except at the bad acting).

There were scenes put in for shock value that bombed. One particular scene was not necessary to the story, was never explained, and was not even scary. They must have needed an extra 45 seconds to fill.

I say, save your money and - if you MUST - rent the DVD which should be out in a matter of weeks.

The Butcher's Wife
(1991)

I can't denigrate this feel-good movie
It's a harmless, little romantic comedy that entertains and delights me. I watch it every time it's on TV.

Demi's character conveys mystery and innocence...and the blonde hair is most suitable to that end. Plus it foreshadows (spoiler) that Jeff Daniels (also blond) and she are meant for each other.

The gay parts are subtle and sweet...I take no offense at all and am surprised that others do.

I no longer expect perfection in any movie. Having said that, if you just want to be entertained and need a break from violence, cursing, and nudity....give this movie a try.

American Gun
(2002)

Expecting little....I was enthralled
Channel-flipping, I stopped at "American Gun". Ready to change to another movie, I decided to give it 5-minutes. 15-minutes. All 95- minutes.

*** spoiler*** An elderly grandfather, haunted by a traumatic split-second decision made during WW2, goes on to be haunted by another traumatic split-second decision made in the present.

To me, movies don't have to be perfect. If they hold my attention, if they make me feel something, if they make me muse about what has been presented, I am happy.

See it.

Le violon rouge
(1998)

regarding the Tarot Cards
True, I did not read all 200+ of the viewer comments, but of the many ones I read: I did not see anyone make the realization that I did: that the tarot cards were telling the future of the violin, not of the lady. A long life. A long voyage. Etc.

I almost passed on this movie, but I'm ecstatic that I watched it on IFC. It's excellent and I will watch it again as soon as I see it listed. I agree with other viewers that Samuel Jackson did not emote appropriately, considering he'd been searching for this instrument for so long. I don't have much else to add, but the rules dictate that I go on for at least ten lines. So there you have it!
