Flywheel
(2003)

Guys got it right back in 2003 on a shoestring budget. What are we producing today?
I just want to commend this guys for this movie. They have since gone on and made much better quality productions, but I just saw this film in 2014 for the first time, and it's amazing what you can do with a bunch of volunteers and an authentic story and 20k USD. The acting, for not pro actors, is very authentic. People were just being themselves in many cases, and the story is very believable, because I have had similar experiences in my life. With limited budget and all the odds stacked against them, they still did this with a spirit of excellence and I am truly inspired and challenged not only by the courage of the production team, but also by the story and it's characters. Well done guys. I score it this high, despite some obvious flaws in production quality, because I feel the story and acting is more real than many Hollywood productions. I think these guys were ahead of their time and are pioneers. Look for instance at what Britt Marling achieved with a shoestring budget and today's technology.

Noah
(2014)

PLEASE Hollywood, Wake up, Why can't you tell the story as it is?
If you are not creative enough to write your own story, don't take a Bible story and rip the dam from under the duck. I mean, you already have a basic script available. Stick to it. What a waste of budget this movie has been. I don't want to know what budget we are looking at, but better things could have been done with it. The Noah, flood and ark story is good enough and crazy enough as it is, no need to screw it up or make major changes to it like that. What were you guys thinking?! Apart from major flaws in the plot, there are some very serious and cunning lies woven into the story, completely misrepresenting the Creator who the book is about. You even sneaked a bit of evolution and gap theory into it as well?! Seriously. What did you guys smoke? We are not stupid. Stop making films that insults our intelligence.

I am waiting for the day that somebody makes a proper Noah movie where he actually takes two of every KIND as it is written, and there are also little dinosaurs on board. That will be controversial enough.

Ah yes, lastly. The animation of the flying doves were horrible. Why did you skimp on that? Doves clap their wings a little, and then they glide a little, they don't clap frantically all the time like a duck that's about to be sucked into a jet turbine. Not that better animation would have rescued the movie.

I am beginning to think that the movie was specifically intended to perpetuate lies, and it was the goal to be such a mess as it is. I just can't fathom why somebody would mess a good story up like that.

Roepman
(2011)

Excellence on all levels.
Normally, when I choose a movie, I stand at the video shop and read other user reviews on IMDb on my phone. Roepman (Stargazer) was no exception, and I am glad I picked it up and finally decided to watch it with my wife.

I don't easily rate a movie this high, let alone take time to write a review on IMDb. This is one of the best movies ever to come out of South Africa.

Great acting, great cinematography, spot on historical context and a great sound track. Then there is the story line. Perfect. Some of the storyline is still left to the imagination, as not all plots are conclusive. Things are treated exactly as they are, and not sugar coated.

As an Afrikaans South African boy, growing up and attending the Dutch Reformed Church in Newcastle, Kwazulu Natal, I can stand for the authenticity of this story. The photos I have from my parents and our family in the early years in Newcastle, looks very similar to the town depicted in the movie.

Many of the characters and family situations and stories sound similar to what I have witnessed or heard off while growing up. I think it's a very honest and raw window into a typical Afrikaans community of the 60's and 70's.

The Director also handled sexuality, puberty, coming of age and other issues with an incredible wisdom and sensitivity showing just enough to propel the story forward.

I highly recommend the movie and have found myself wondering about the fate of many of the characters long after the closing credits stopped. I really hope there are more films of this standard to come out of South Africa, and I hope other film makers take note, because THIS is how you make a proper movie!

Stilte
(2012)

Close but no cigar
It breaks my heart that such an awesome powerful and relevant message is canceled out by spots of poor acting, technical issues like obvious lip-sync problems and a performing artist that cannot pitch properly. The Afrikaans dialog was also weird and unnatural in places. I am an Afrikaans speaker, and we don't speak like that. It's great to use local people to play in the movie, but they needed more coaching. It was obvious that people were not comfortable in front of the camera. Releasing a movie with mistakes like this is almost unforgivable. I hope the producers learn from their mistakes. The Afrikaans film industry is in a renaissance, but this one unfortunately misses the mark. I believe this film could have been salvaged if the director had some higher standards and redid shoots until they were perfect. Hopefully somebody some day can tell the same story, but with more excellence and the world will take note.

Sound of My Voice
(2011)

Yes Yes Yes.
I love this movie. Maggie is such a believable character, and it's evident that Brit had a hand in the writing and that the role was tailored for her.

It's incredible what you can do with some brilliant minds, a micro budget and a camera or two. In some of the interviews I watched, it came out that these people did not even have official film school training, but they came out with an unique and intriguing story that keeps you on the edge of your seat till the end. I hope there are going to be buy in for a sequel because it really deserves one. I salute you. Well done.

Blue Crush 2
(2011)

Blue Crush is a junk production
I know several people that was involved in this production, and lots of them are disappointed and were not aware it's going to be such a bad movie. The target market are teens, but teens are way more discerning. It's really an insult to South African surfing, contains bad acting and there are lots of big continuity errors. For instance, the culminating competition in the story held at Jeffreys Bay was shot at a KZN South Coast spot (Look at the jet ski's registration number) You've got actors that can't surf and surfers that can't act. Bruce Gold was portrayed as a pilot, why did they not let him play himself? Why cast Twiggy and Jordy in non surfing roles? Then you have the girls take off on a wave, and suddenly when they zoom out, it's clearly visible they are on completely another wave, at another location. This is not the error of the cast and crew, I believe this is the error of the people that produced and directed this movie. What were they thinking? I guess their only goal was to sell a couple of DVD's to unsuspecting buyers and make something from rental outlets. If you have that kind of budget, why no produce something of more significance and a high standard?
