The Beautiful Life: TBL
(2009)

Trashy people in a trashy world. OK TV.
From the look of the new teen soap-opera, TBL looks like a hit. But sometimes a success with a wide audience has to be on the cost of good taste, which is the case here.

The pilot episode takes place in NYC. Farmboy Chris from Ohio is enjoying his last days of the holiday, when he is accidentally spotted by a modeling agent, Simon. And throughout the rest of the episode Chris rams himself into more than enough drama, considered it only is supposed to show the first 42 hours of his modeling career. From the agency, to the photo-shoot, to the model-house, to the party.

This is basically the over-the-top drama from 'Americas Next Top Model' fusioned with the glamour of the hit show 'Gossip Girl' and on top of all this there is a bit of bad social realism (Drugs etc.).

But even though the first episodes' storyline is poorly written and most of the camera-work is very amateur, it somehow works. The young cast of the show saves it (especially Sarah Paxton as Raina). They make all of the trashy drama in some way believable. Because they are trashy actors portraying trashy people in a trashy world.

I hope we, in the next few weeks, will see that this show weren't a waste of our time and CW's money. But i doubt that.

UPDATE: Apparently the show was a waste of our time and CW's money. The show has now been cancelled. I'm not the least surprised.

True Blood
(2008)

Alan Ball did this?... No way...
As a huge fan of Six Feet Under (in my opinion the most excellent show ever seen on TV) i was very excited about the new Alan Ball project. Now i have seen it... And God, i am disappointed.

It's a mess. The actors are just absolutely horrible, and worse are the characters they portray. You find no humanity in the cast and it all seems oh so fake.

The only good thing about this show is probably the production design (done by Suzuki Ingerslev). He's done a fantastic job. But besides that... This really sucks. The story is down right dumb, and the attempt to create eternal cliffhangers in the end of each episode is just exhausting.

Don't watch it. It is a waist of time...

Antichrist
(2009)

The greatest piece of art in modern danish cinema.
Lars Von Trier is a twisted and somewhat intriguing person. And i must say that he really hit it out of the park this time.

This movie is amazing. It has a simple and very heartfelt storyline about a couple that loses their child. The wife falls into the dark of depression and her husband, a therapist, tries to cure her by figuring out what her fear is. To do this they hike up to "Eden", a cabin the have. And nature takes it course.

In this movie LVT really explores the sick and twisted minds of people. Both on screen and in the audience. After the terrible "The Boss Of It All" he finally makes his comeback by returning to one of his older subjects: The suffering woman.

The audience is not pleased, and yet, i do think they are. I know i were. Cause in this movie he put his finger in something that everybody shares: fear and sex. Somehow... A perversion. Cause everyone is somewhat perverted.

This is the most spectacular piece of art i have ever seen on a screen in these modern days. It has all the emotion and beauty in the world, and will be stuck in my mind, many years from now.

All hail Lars, "the greatest director in the world" (Of course he was being ironic. I mean please, he's danish)
