Pinocchio
(2022)

Not bad at all
I'm not sure where all the hatred is coming from. This was quite nice and the fellow who played the fox wearing the living room curtains as a cape complete with curtain rod holes (Keegan-Michael Key) was simply marvelous in his wily and scheming ways.

The silent cat as in the 1940 original was also reminiscent of Harpo from the Marx Brothers, but I think he was supposed to.

Unlike other incarnations of Pinocchio, there was no drug or water to drink that turned you into a donkey. Instead it followed Carlo Collidi's original idea that if you are a bad boy, you turn into a donkey.

And while there was some girls on the caravan, that was never played out. Would've been interesting to see what they called a bad girl, but I guess that a rating and reputation to maintain and uphold.

While I don't think it had anything new to add to the mix, except to point out that Monstro was not a whale but a true nightmare fuel sea monster, and some other scary stuff that wasn't for children - it was still charming to watch.

Wave Twisters
(2001)

Wow. Just wow.
Watch drunk or stoned. There is no other way you will appreciate this deliberately weird little film.

One star for its existence.

One star for the clearly difficult editing.

And one star for not completely grossing me out.

The Batman
(2022)

Generous rating
First off this will likely get flagged as SPOILER for only one reason. I am not lauding and applauding the movie. This has been a new practice I've been seeing in IMDB ratings and likely will continue - reviews being tagged as SPOILER which in fact are nothing of the sort merely because the production crew is angry they aren't being worshiped.

Nonetheless, I did see this whole movie, from beginning to end, and ... I was disappointed, and that's putting it nicely.

There is one thing I like ... or don't ... about the new Batman. He's showing in a fight he's human. He gets hurt a lot in this movie.

I think - I think I rather liked it better when he appeared superhuman, you know, like an Emo Superman or something like the Dark Knight showed him to be. Powerful. Gadgets. Darkness. Invulnerable.

This last Batman movie made shows that he's human and that he makes all kinds of mistakes. I'm not sure if I'm supposed to appreciate that new image.

This movie does have its moments but they are seldom and far between. Even the twist ending can't save it.

The bad guy without giving any spoilers is ... different. I know movies are all striving to be unique and original and - well - maybe they succeeded here.

He's definitely no Heath Ledger but he's also not a Frank Gorshin. Kind of a fine line between the two with EXTREME overacting by both Batman and him.

It's painful to watch. I'm sorry. I have to say that. To a REAL Batman fan who has followed all the way from the 1943 B&W series up to "The Dark Knight Rises," this movie is a clear disappointment with ZERO rewatch value. Hell even "Batman & Robin" from 1997 the major 4th movie flop with 125-million dollars spent on its production with Uma Thurman and Arnold Schwarzenegger as villains were better than this tripe.

I suspect there will be polarized views. For those who have never seen a single Batman movie or TV episode, yeah, it's fair. Watch it if you absolutely can't find anything else.

But if you have seen so much as ANY other Batman movie or TV episode from any other actor. Don't waste your time. Don't waste your money. And definitely don't waste your brainpower trying to figure it out.

Ask ANYONE what the plot of this particular film was, even die-hard fans of it, and they'll come up empty handed. The plot was a real throwaway that any hormone driven teenager could've come up with. The only saving grace was that a lot of people got killed and there was a bit of mystery about it. Still many movies outside this can and have done it better.

Now we do remember Heath Ledger. Oh yes. He was epic. He set the new bar for villains in Batman and we perfectly remember that movie clearly and well. This guy, this new villain is - completely forgettable. And SUCH an overactor. He makes William Shatner look and sound like the serious Vin Diesel.

It's that bad. It really is.

I hope any new production teams for the future Batman movies from here will listen to the critics such as myself and do something DIFFERENT. Something memorable. Something people will say, "I just saw the new Batman movie in the theater and I'm going back with my friends to see it again next week."

Hollywood, Paramount, whoever you are. LISTEN to that. You want REWATCH value in your productions. You want a movie so good that whomever sees it later invites their friends to see it. They see it in the theater, they eventually buy it on Blu-Ray. That is the coin of the realm today if you plan to achieve excellence. If you plan to achieve profit. Rewatch value. Without it, you are flushing money down the toilet.

The Keep
(1983)

Mesmerizing and Incredible
Quite possibly one of the greatest movies ever made carried on the wings of Tangerine Dream's ethereal music tones and mood.

Has some of the most amazing special effects you will ever see - and yes - the crosses are made of SILVER - not nickel.

Frogs
(1972)

Wow
I'm sorry but the rating of PG for this film is way too mild. There are some really horrific scenes in here with lots of blood and screaming. It's a good horror film you should see at least once but yes, but the rating should be R, not PG.

Tom and Jerry
(2021)

Really not good
Imagine a Tom & Jerry movie with live sequences that is fairly good. Not great. But still has no rewatch value.

Now add to that some of the worst music you've ever heard. Really bad. Absolutely forgettable. Awful vocals. Poor tunes. None of it is memorable and it's really just not good at all.

In many ways I think this movie was a platform for several first-time musicians of different starting groups who just don't have any talent. None of it familiar. None of it remotely recognizable. All of it new and most of it bad.

I wish this movie was better. In a few ways it was funny and charming, a little bit. But not enough to carry it through. --dw817 (02-28-21)

Devil May Care
(2021)

Arrhhmm ...
I'm just not feeling it.

This show barely squeaked by on its pilot episode which was SORTA funny. Now it's just pitiful. To see a show that has the devil and does a pretty job, that would be the, "Aaagh! It's The Mr. Hell Show."

Familiar stories, likable characters, distinct personalities, and it's fun. Yes it is. Check it out.

Madagascar: A Little Wild
(2020)

Not based on the original Madagascar movie
Far be it from me to drag down what might be a perfect show for little kids. However I was expecting at least the personalities of characters from the original movie to be in place:

Alex The Lion: friendly and constantly suppresses his predator instincts Gloria The Hippo: Opinionated and empowered Melman The Giraffe: Hypochondriac extreme, sick all the time Marty The Zeba: Carefee and often careless, clumsy, friends with Alex

Add to this a no show of popular characters that were in the movie:

King Julien The Lemur: Smug and vain ruler, loves to move it move it Mort: King Julien's lackey, completely ingratiating, quite brave actually

Top Secret Penguins: Kowalski,Skipper, Private, and Rico.

Now I understand the main characters in here are supposed to be younger, possibly pre-teen, but this particular show could've used ANY character or theme at all as the ones presented in here act pretty well all the same as any other kid's show. Vanilla and boring with no real distinctive traits of any kind and plenty of songs to teach little children the basics of life. Wow.

It's a waste to call this "Madgascar" as that particular movie had some interesting personalities and conflicts between the main characters that was both delightful and interesting to observe - something not at all even remotely appearing in this series.

The Last Exorcism
(2010)

Ignore the cover
That never happens, her climbing the wall like that. In fact this whole film is a really slow burn. It is interesting, but at the end - ah - so predictable and such a cop-out of what could've really been a superb first-person camera-recorded video.

Yes it uses that tried and true shaky-camera through most of it. But - for the most of it, the beginning and middle,it's actually pretty good. You get immersed with the characters in it.

Interesting story. Who's the guilty one ? Is there only one ? You should see this film at least once - and then realize why it got 6 instead of 9-stars for a terrible ending. --dw817 (08-02-20)

Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist
(2005)

Surprisingly good
While this story has been done many times before, good versus evil, faith vs doubt. I think it was the actors in this one that did such a stunning and excellent job to tell the story and present it. That and the background which really did seem authentic.

And dare I say, this video has rewatch value. I don't say that very often.

However it's pretty obvious the writers and producers took a hard look at the film, THE KEEP (1983) and if you haven't seen that, you should to see where they got their great ideas from. The Keep of course being A 10-star film. --dw817 (07-31-20)

Terminator: Dark Fate
(2019)

Just not good
You are very much aware that there is zero to no music at all for this entire movie. It's like they took the best parts of the first 3-terminator movies and decided to make it a silent picture.

Music drives the film. Especially action, especially suspense. Without it, it's just not there. Maybe they lost their shirt to the original composer or something but at no point in the film did I feel the same thrill or interest as I did the first 3-films.

Now granted at least #4 and #5 weren't as good but at least they had music to drive it. This last terminator #6 (Dark Fate 2019) is just crap without any decent or good music.

That counts for half of the film so I have to take my rating of 6 out of 10 and snap it right in half. This is not a silent film, why there are such a low output of music for this thing is just beyond me.

And Terminator should be done. Sure it was nice to see the original actor for Sarah Connor again the original Terminator played by Arnold Schwarzenegger, nonetheless, it wasn't enough to save this train-wreck of a movie.

No rewatch value. Really don't watch it at all. Watch the first 3 movies again and enjoy what is a solid and entertaining trio of Terminator movies.

Alien News Desk
(2019)

Definitely different
I think Tuva Van Void is hot for a robot, but that's really about it.

The jokes are somewhat amusing about misinterpreting common human events - and there's not more more to it. I think more thought could've gone through this to make it intellectually humorous, which it's not.

Watch if it's free, don't pay a dime if it's not.

Dune
(1984)

Disgusted with the negative reviews.
This film to me is just about perfect. Very close to it. It's such a work of art that there are several edited versions floating around many years later adding deleted scenes, cleaning up camera work, all kinds of stuff - all from fans of the film.

There is a lot of love for this awesome movie.

I recommend you don't see the new Dune miniseries before this or even read the book. Just go into this with a completely open mind about science-fiction and you will not be disappointed.

If you're going to see one 1984 science fiction film BESIDES 1984 itself which is also a great movie, see this one. D U N E.

A masterpiece and beautiful work of art for the very hard work that went into creating and presenting it.

Jaws 3-D
(1983)

One very long advertisement
While this is indeed a nice little bite size offering in the world of JAWS movies - this particular one is like a long running advertisement for Seaworld.

I kid you not from the first few minutes it plays you know it's Seaworld and from the last minute it plays you know that - once again it is Seaworld.

The term is spoken at least 11 times during the feature and it shows off all the rides, events, and shows as well as the underwater scenes you can see in the tunnels and caves.

It looks great because most theme parks do but you don't normally expect to see something like this in a real movie. You should get paid to watch their advertisement.

It wouldn't surprise me in the least to find out this film is indeed backed heavily and financially by Seaworld itself.

THX 1138
(1971)

Very deep
This is one of my all-time favorite guilty pleasures and I must've seen this movie over a dozen times now. It's not so much artistic as it is autistic. It's very slow and very deep in thoughts.

It's hard to describe. It's like a fine drink that you just can't put down. You want to comment on it in your head every second, relishing everything about it.

I suspect the lack of any definable plot is overridden by the fact this film is superior in camera work, location, audio, and presentation to a great many films even shot in our modern today.

It portrays a very real and possible future for humanity. Not to give away the plot, you need to see it for yourself to find why so many people applaud this particular very low-budget and old flickering science fiction film.

Directed by a familiar face, George Lucas, this was his vision before Star Wars was even heard of or considered.

My rating is 9-stars only for the fact that it has not been picked up for the future and remade the way Adam West Batman was done with a darker vision starring Michael Keaton. I'd be very curious to see this revisited with a multi-million dollar budget and keeping the same outstanding excellence as the first. If it does, that would be 10-stars from me.

Cats
(2019)

Usually I'm Polar
You know, the opposite, bipolar sometimes too I guess. I rate very highly what most people despise because I'm skewed like that. For instance I REALLY liked Mike Myers in The Cat In The Hat and most people didn't.

So I should rate this highly, right ?

No.

I can't do that here. This is really bad. I - can't put it into words. Just - everything about this cries - weird. And not interesting weird or even cult weird - just - bad. Like the bleating of a lamb. Baa-aaa-aaad.

I can't possibly spoil the story for you as sadly there is no story. Not really.

Okay maybe I can find something. Remember how kooky it was in Monty Python's The Meaning Of Life - you remember those fish with the human faces ? John Cleese as a fish.

Well there you go. Now imagine that put onto bad CGI anthropomorphic cats - and throughout the whole film. It's not CGI. It's not costume. It's just ugly what they did here. It's nasty. It's not at all pleasant to look at.

If it were costumes and furry stuff like the original play, yeah, that's okay, but no, they took it a step further and a step too far ... goes beyond weird it's just - wrong in every possible way.

So don't see it like I did. Don't see the preview. If this is all you ever find out about this film is my review, count yourself lucky and go see a good Cirque Du Soleil instead. You'll thank me later.

Joker
(2019)

Just not a good movie.
Allow me to be the critic. I was not impressed with this film nor did I find it funny, clever, or really even remotely interesting.

My G/F begged me to watch it with her and I'm sorry, I just could not find anything redeeming about it at all. I asked her honest opinion about it before I gave mine additionally and she said it was really bad and not at all something she would want to see again.

I voiced my opinion to her and I think she was surprised. I think she expected that I would've liked it, as a man's film. But I didn't.

And this is after she sees the latest Saw movie and Green Inferno and gives those her thumbs up.

Heath Ledger in the Dark Knight did so much better. And all the praise he gets is rightly deserved. THAT film is excellent. He was intelligent, cunning, and had a damned interesting personality and mental design. And THAT particular Joker is tops compared to this schizophrenic mess by the same name.

This is crap. Plain and simple. Violence for the sake of violence. The story is disjointed and ugly. With big time emphasis on ugly. There are zero scenes in here I would ever care to see again.

Scenes are set-up like cardboard dolls specifically playing out predictable and disgusting designs for the sole sake of predictable shock value.

If there is one point of interest, I see how highly it is rated by the general public and I suspect this is not artificial inflation but the state of our reviewers today, and if there is anything worse than this movie it surely must be the people who rate it so highly as artistic and cult-worthy.

If this is what is desirable, mindless violence and deeply disturbing psychotic behavior, than so be it. But I won't be a part of it - I won't support it - I won't watch it.

I only give this two marks. One for the obvious amount of work that went into this train wreck, obvious nods to the original Batman saga, and two it had some memorable music at points. But not enough for me to EVER watch it again. Disgusting waste of my time and money. (11-17-19) --dw817

The Stepford Wives
(2004)

Not what you think.
First off if you are going in to see this based on the original movie or the book than you will definitely give this little to zero stars.

Thus I think is why the rating on it is so low. Everyone is basing it upon the edge-of-your-seat thriller that came out so many years before it.

But - if you come to see it with an open mind as a very silly science fiction movie and parody, definitely a comedy, then you're going to come away with a greater peace of mind and a chuckle in your chest.

It stars major characters such as Nicole Kidman, Matthew Broderick, Bette Midler, Glenn Close, Christopher Walken, Jon Lovitz, Faith Hill, and Larry King just to name a few. And it's fun and funny.

It is =NOT= a serious film like the first one was. The first one was epic, a real mystery, a real slow burn, a must watch film. And if you haven't seen it yet, don't spoil yourself by watching this first. No, go to see THAT one first, then this one as a very sweet after dinner dessert.

For this particular incarnation is like a sugar coated Easter egg with a bite already taken out of it, dripping with gooey sweetness to show you how silly and completely off the wall it is. It is not in the least bit scary.

Place this more along the lines of PLEASANTVILLE and you have a more accurate picture on the theme, plot, and general and overall feeling of the film. --dw817 (11-13-19)

Limbo
(2019)

Clearly underrated
This is quite the gem. It shows that even with a shoestring budge of a little bit of dry ice, cheap wearable plastic horns, red lights, and aluminum tubing, that if the story is powerful enough, that is all that is additionally needed to carry it to completion.

Not to give away the story but imagine yourself appearing in a room, both with a prosecutor and defense attorney. The crime ? Your life. The reward ? heaven.

What makes this film especially interesting is the dialogue and actors. The wording is so very carefully chosen to hook at once the viewer. God and the devil are referred to so familiarly as to the "Old Man" and "Brother."

Has a twist ending too. Must watch, and has re-watch value at that.

Zero sex scenes though and zero nudity. A few might've driven the stake all the way to me at least up to 10-stars, but I was not at all disappointed by what I did see and will definitely want to see again later.

Halloween III: Season of the Witch
(1982)

We are all different I suppose.
I don't know. This to me is one of the greatest and scariest films of all time right next to Hellraiser 2 and Aliens (2). Not to give it all away but imagine someone making something terrifying from the rocks of stonehenge. Their power. Their secret.

Something evil and not of this world. Something unspeakable. And the victims ? Only the most innocent ones of course.

Has great music (not the silly "Silver Shamrock" singing part obviously), no I'm referring to the creepy and well-played background music, and opening theme music with the digital tones as the beginning title is crafted and drawn.

And a twist ending like you would never expect.

Superb. Has great rewatch value and will always be a 10-star film to me - and one I watch every time October rolls around.

If you haven't seen it, do so. Love it ? Buy it. Keep it. Share it. --dw817 (10-05-19)

The Glorious Seven
(2019)

Don't you believe it ...
Must agree with gpsychos2-239-278464. I decided to watch it and found it crap.

For these "viewers" who are rating this film 9 or 10 stars, click on their name to see this is the ONLY film they've reviewed. gpsychos is correct. It's staff, actors, workers, and then some who were part of the production of the film.

Very very disappointing a film company would resort to such underhanded tactics.

Baretta
(1975)

Good show
I'm just now getting around to watching all of these episodes since I got them. They are hard hitting, tearful, funny, and amazing. Especially the episode, "The Coppelli Oath."

You owe it to yourself to check in to this detective series and add it to your library, not just for yourself, but for your friends to see as well.

Very nicely done for such an old show. A lot can be learned about humanity and handling difficult life situations in this. Especially if it involves crime.

The Cat in the Hat
(2003)

Found it to be a 10.
I have kept coming back to this video review on IMDb time and time again to see if ANYONE would ever write something positive about it, and they haven't.

The thing is, me, personally, I found this film to be 10 out of 10 stars.

Why ? It's crazy, zany, silly, scary in some parts, a bit of potty humor, and has just a few twists of kinky double innuendos enough to satisfy anyone.

The humor is insane ! It REALLY is a good film that delivers on so many levels. Mike Meyers is perfectly cast for Cat In The Hat and the conflicting personalities of Concrete (no !) Conrad and Sally, the two kids, is darling to behold.

And this film absolutely DELIVERS on special effects. It's a wild romp through a strange and amusing world as crazy and madcap as you can get. There's your classic comic parenting, good guy vs bad guy, a showdown, travel to another dimension, important lessons learned, and even more of the Cat's crazy antics, ego, and special effects.

I'm really surprised that many people did not like this amazing rough gem. I've seen it at least 8 times now and would definitely watch it again for the unique, silly, and completely unforgettable personalities of each and every character in the film. Firedddddd - duh !

This is also (to my knowledge) my first review here, but you can find me on the Internet everywhere, dw817, and have done 80 other movie reviews on my own writing website.
