The Spirit
(2008)

Why has this got 5 stars
This was the first film that I saw in 2009, and to be honest there are2 ways of looking at this, 1 that this is going to be a bad year forcinema or 2 it can only get better.I am not aware of the comic TheSpirit. The main problem I have with the film is that that the directordid not have a clue as to how to portray some intelligent subjectmatter. To me the film is strange to say the least but not in aninteresting way, it is weird and exceptionally boring. I watch atleast2 films a week at the cinema and have done for the last 3 1/2years and have never known so many people walk out.As for the look ofthe film, and again whilst it is different, it is not different in aninteresting way, it is far too dark and it gets depressing after 5minutes.I just cannot begin to say how dreadful this film is. Watchingpaint dry is far more exciting and far less offensive!!

Goal II: Living the Dream
(2007)

Good though bit like a soap opera
What makes football great is that it is a game of opinions. It is obvious from reading some of the postings on here that some people have judged the film on whether or not they like David Beckham. Yes, he does appear in the film, but then so do a lot of the other players. Like it or not David Beckham is one of the most bankable stars in football, so it inevitable. Lets face it anyone from Arsenal (as one of the postings is from) is not going to be a Beckham fan. Anyway, as for the film, I think the makers of the film are so intent on steering the film away from the predictability of most sports films, ie player/team starts off badly, then ends up winning an hour and a half later (well you all know what happens) that it leaves out any real moments of drama or tension. What we have left is a bit of footballers soap opera. Saying that though, I thought it was good entertainment.

Mission: Impossible III
(2006)

Superb action film
I have recently watched Mission Impossible 1 and 2 on DVD, whilst I thought 1 was good, I wasn't over impressed with MI 2. So I went to watch the 3rd film with mixed feelings. I was greatly surprised at how good it was. I thought the cast were good and worked well together, and Phillip Seymour Hoffman was outstanding (as usual), unbelievability menacing. Tom Cruise, did what you would expect from Tom in this type of film, though at times I thought there were times when it was obvious that he was acting, though this maybe being a little picky. As for the special effects, in my opinion they were as good as any film of this type that I have seen. This is for 2 reasons, 1. They were extremely stunning and realistic, in the films context. 2. In my opinion, the effects didn't overpower the storyline. This is an action film, that is high in action and a reasonably good story line which is well worth checking out.

When a Stranger Calls
(2006)

reasonable horror/thriller
As horror movies go, I am not sure if this really fits in, I would say it is more like a thriller. I am not the most hardened of film fans when it comes to horror, so unlike some parts of this film still seemed to make me jump, though I am pretty sure that is down to me being a 'scaredy cat' rather than any the film being very scary. I did like the house that it was set in, I thought it lent itself to this film really well. I quite enjoyed the film, even though there were quite a few gaping holes in the plot. Like when Jilly realised the phone calls were made from inside the house, I think she was the only one who was surprised as the previous half hour or so was made up of strange unaccounted noises coming from within the house. All in all though I still quite enjoyed this film, not always sure why, but I did.

Goal!
(2005)

An almost believable football film
This film was cracked up to be the first serious football (soccer to some people) film. Whilst I am not sure it lived up to the hype that I heard, I still thought it was a good effort. Though at times it was predictable I thought they got some parts spot on. What I thought was particularly good was the way they portrayed the passion of the Geordie (Newcastle) fans. As for the actual football scenes, I thought they were good. it seems exceptionally difficult for 'Hollywood' films to make sport films that are not cheesy or that the outcome is so blatantly contrived it makes a nonsense of what went on before. This films action was only mildly 'cheesy' in fact the training scenes I thought were top class. As for the story it is quite good in its simplicity, and that helped to make the film more enjoyable, the acting was fine, though I am not sure that this film really challenged the actors real acting ability. All in all this I think this is an enjoyable film which is definitely worth a watch.

The World's Fastest Indian
(2005)

charming film
I went to see this film twice. What I really liked about it was its sheer optimism, especially that of Burt Munroe played by Anthony Hopkins. Set in New Zealand it is about an fairly old man who has a dream to see how fast his, mainly home made, Indian bike would go. Along with being optimistic I think it shows the good side in a lot of people and their willingness to help people with enthusiasm and charm. This is lacking in a lot of films which tend to rely heavily on cynicism and the worst traits in people. This film to me a definite 'feel good' movie which made me smile throughout. For charm and unpretentiousness I gave this film 10 out of 10. Fantastic

The Poseidon Adventure
(1972)

Excellent Disaster Movie
I always wonder what makes people go to watch disaster movies. In fact saying that you enjoyed a disaster movie and watching people during a disaster should hardly be cheerful watching. Though like a lot of things, the reality is sometimes different. The Poseidon Adventure, like most disaster movies is fairly easy to know what is going to happen next, you know that some people survive and some don't, those that don't seem to be the ones that argue with the leader of the group (or star actor) who has always seem to have a knack of making the right decision. To a certain extent though I think these points can be fairly irrelevant as the 'enjoyment' comes from watching the journey beginning to end. Answering my question in the first line, i think like most people, when you watch a good disaster movie it can have a positive message in that no matter how bad things get there is often a way out. As for the film, I thought the acting was really good, the chemistry between the characters was good, though at times a little clichéd. And the 'special effects' were excellent for the early seventies. All in all I thought it was a very good film.

Hulk
(2003)

Such a let down
To me, I thought this film was such a let down. After being a big fan of the TV series I was looking forward to this film. I found that it was a painfully slow build up to any action, with nothing of any interest going on. When 'The Hulk' did appear I just could not give it any credibility at all, to me it looked like a huge computer generated green monster. Yes I know the TV series had a man painted green, but I was quite young :) I still found it far more believable than what this film had to offer. To be honest I normally try to find something positive about most films, but to be honest, the only thing that was positive about this film was the fact that it ended. TRULY AWFUL

Slither
(2006)

Slimy disgusting but fun
As I have been to the cinema regularly over the last year or so you get to see quite a few trailers. When I originally saw the trailer for this film I really wasn't certain whether I would like it or not. In fact it crossed my mind on many occasions to give it a miss. Being a little bit of a cinema geek now I also listen and read many reviews, a lot of which were complimentary about this film, so I thought what the hell, lets go and see it. I am glad that I did, I thought it got the balance between horror/drama and comedy was really well handled. I thought the acting was really spot on, not taking the film too seriously without turning it into a farce. There were many occasions whether I wanted to squirm or laugh. To me, I thought this film was a good honest film with no pretensions of being something that it wasn't. It is just quite a simple story of alien 'slugs' who land on earth with the intention of taking it over, and a group of people who try to stop them, real simple but highly enjoyable. Finally, I thought the Mayor was great.

The Matrix
(1999)

Surprisingly excellent
What can I say about this film. I must admit that I did not see this at the cinema, in fact I watched in on DVD for the first time. To be honest I wasn't really expecting much, and what I saw from trailers etc. I did not think that this film would be to my liking. I thought that it might be high on style but low on substance. How wrong was I, when I watched the film everything all fitted into place, it wasn't about Keanu Reeves trying to look cool, it has got a lot more going for it, including some excellent twists and turns that took me by complete surprise. Some of these twists were so good that I had to evaluate what was going on at least once. One of the very few action films that can be classed as being intelligent as well as good fun.

Alien Autopsy
(2006)

enjoyable film not to be taken too seriously
I have been puzzled as to all the bad reviews about this film. Whilst it will not be a contender for any of the film awards, it is still an entertaining film. The story follows two men who hoax an alien autopsy from actual footage that one of them has actually seen, it will become clearer in the actual movie. I do think the scenes where they are doing the autopsy are in fact quite funny and from watching it being filmed it is difficult to understand how anyone took it seriously. The performances in the film are of an acceptable standard, nothing special, the two leads have acted before in children's television series, but nothing to this extent. The only thing I will say is that I thought I was watching Ant and Dec not the two characters they were meant to be playing. I think that if you go in with an open mind and do not expect be challenged then I think that you will enjoy this film.
