Public Morals
(2015)

so far so pretty damned good
so far so good. it starts off slowly, finding its legs, a bit too self conscious of getting it right, the era, the cars, the clothes - did a NY cop ever drive around in a VW beetle?! - but by ep 2 it is motoring along nicely. maybe a bit too close of a homage to the tom hanks paul newman gangster flick of a few years back but hey, its imitation is also sincere flattery. & any series that uses the great ronnie drew version of the parting glass has to be pretty sound. but oh edwards burns, the mis spelled whiskEy on the paddy's bottle.....ouch. enough to make my father, a loyal devotee, turn over 10 times................. looking forward to the next 6 episodes

San Andreas
(2015)

woeful. oh woe is me, i watched it
oh mannn, i have just watched this movie. i am SOOOO glad i didn't pay babysitter, parking, gas, popcorn to see it in a cinema. it must be the most expensive b movie ever made. badly made.

bad CGI. ,really bad screenplay. was it a joke? did our amy have a hand in it? is it a cyncial comment on all those poor naieve cinema goers? yes, we can sell you this mierda AND get away with it.

our hero, a helicopter pilot, yes, a HELICOPTER pilot, drives 150/200 towards st fran before realising that maybe another plane or helicopter might just be a good idea....oh the rock, between his ears....

i live in the village in spain where the founder of st. francisco came from. good riddance i think he would have said.

& the end. borrowed out of day after tomorrow....helicopters (from where?) flying in to rescue them...he could have rescued a few of the fee paying suckers as well

The Long Goodbye
(1973)

a mess of a classic book
what a complete mess of a movie. i saw this in the cinema when it first came out. philip marlowe & the long goodbye, my favourite book, far more than a private eye 'thriller', meets robert altman, maker of - up to then - fine iconic movies such as MASH & McCabe & Mrs Miller. i believe that if raymond chandler had seen this insult to what he considered his finest work it would have re-inforced his very jaundiced view of Hollywood. the screenplay completely changes the motivation, time-line, the character of the protagonists. philip marlowe, the man willing to walk down mean streets, the tarnished knight, becomes a shambling mumbling slob, a mess. sterling hayden, doing a fine job as the alcoholic writer, commits suicide instead of becoming the victim of a clever murder. marlowe commits a vicious murder at the end, totally out of character with what we had seen to date in the movie. what a waste of celluloid.

Jack to a King: The Swansea Story
(2014)

worthy but ultimately failed sports doc
what a pity. a great story but....poorly told, poorly put together. e.g. early on we get a lot of talking heads but ....who are they? eventually we find out....eventually. & the chairman petty story is very unclear. OK, he buys the club for a pound but what exactly was his 'rip off' strategy? did he intend to sell the ground for development? did the club actually own the ground? was his main consultant actually involved in the porn business? what you do get is the love & passion & commitment of real fans, a fast disappearing breed. although perhaps we could have done without so much of the vodka breakfast of champions of the girl with the eating disorder....

Marco Polo
(2014)

poor effort at a story that deserves so much more
so looked forward to this but so disappointed by it. come back richard chamberlain & shogun, that series is pure hand crafted artistic furniture compared to this wooden mess. so much money spent, so little thought. the best is the opening titles sequence, beautiful by far beyond anything we see later on. the sex scenes manage to be coldly un- erotic, despite all the beautiful panting bodies. please wont somebody make a shogun for the 21st century as it was written & originally visualised? don't we have enough hamburger serials as our daily diet?....................... maybe netflix have their reasons for dumbing down but surely the success of well written, well acted series like game of thrones & boardwalk empire prove that there is a market for filet mignon as well? PS. did they run out of money at the end? the 2 major battle scenes never happened on screen. & at the very end, in a spy ridden palace, one of the main characters depicts his secret & VERY dangerous plan....on a mural??!!

Interstellar
(2014)

re launch NASA now!
its an 8 vote only because a) i have to see it again to really work through some of the conundrums & b) the occasional clunky winch inducing dialogue & c) the abuse of the 'go gently into the good night' quote. but i fully expect to up my rating on 2nd viewing. cunning fellow this nolan lad, gets you to pay up two times, or even twice..... it HAS to be seen on an IMAX screen (makes me want/need to be a millionaire)to fully experience the stunning visuals. i'd like to see a making of some day to appreciate how much of the effects were in- camera. back in the early 80's i saw 2001 space odyssey for the first time in a cinerama cinema. this was equally as emotional....life is....not bad. 2 love stories as well, 3 if you count the vote for general humanity. & a new star in the making, a Hollywood one, the kid who plays murphy

Peaky Blinders
(2013)

is it me lord, is it only me?
the 1st season of peaky blinders burst upon the TV scene like a nuclear explosion. blinding light, sweeping all before it. BUT ....BUT.... is it me lord, is it only me?, or am i the only one who thinks that season 2 has dropped off dramatically. yes it has tom hardy so far woefully under-used & painfully over-acted, yes it has the wonderful helen mcCrory carrying all before her, but...the attempted assassination scene in the equestrian sales centre? ohhh pleeezzzz... last year, at least an 8 out of 10, & was a must see every week. this year i'd be doing charity work with a 4/10

or.....is it me lord, is it only me?

The Salvation
(2014)

poor but pretty western
i don't know why they bothered....................................... it doesn't bring anything new to the western genre................... the action isn't particularly well filmed nor very believable....... the actors do as much with their parts as they can, but underwritten R US. what a pack of wimps............................. Eva green has the best lines in the movie but even her character is a total cypher. i was expecting a different take on the wild west, a danish point of view. all we get is.....McDonald's............... beautiful scenery though & its a pity that lovely danish actress didn't survive longer. Mada Mickelson must have needed to top up the pension fund

The Honourable Woman
(2014)

affectation, anyone...?
does anyone really believe that the middle east labyrinth is anything like this piece of over cooked slow burnt twaddle?..................... you end up expecting that people in this series will go to the toilet & read tea leaves between their thighs.................................... in ep 2, the lead character does a sofa romp with her new security guard whilst her previous one lies grievously wounded........................... the security guard (top range i supppose?)forgot back in ep 1 that the 1st rule of good guards is to look behind you & don't look cocky..... people don't talk in this series, they enunciate....................... Eli Wallache rule, all you scriptwriters & wannabee auteurs.......... 'dont talk, shoot'........................................................
