Upload
(2020)

This could be something really good but it needs improvement
The show is created by Greg Daniels the co-creator of Parks and Rec and The office with Michael Schur who created The Good Place. So it makes me compare this with The Good Place instantly. Maybe they developed the idea together but got different opinions on how the series should go so they work on different projects. Similar to the Good Place it is also about a seemingly perfect afterlife. Unlike the Good Place, it is more of a Sci-fi series instead of a fantasy one, and it discussed technology and wealth inequality whereas the Good Place is mostly talking about morals and philosophy.

The idea of upload is quite nice, predicting the future to live in a virtual world after we died, it might actually be possible I think. The series put a lot of effort in making this reality believable. But the plot was not so great. Yes, there are conspiracy, comedic and romantic elements and they are quite addictive. However, I think it was a bit rush, there are too many things Greg wanted to put into the show with only ten episodes, different storylines are only slightly touched, aren't enough explanations and it felt like the links are missing. I don't really know what I'm getting from the show. Another problem is that there are way too many supporting characters, they aren't well-developed, there isn't enough time to get to know them and they kept coming in and out. I don't really develop an interest in their storylines which is a pity as I think some of them have the potential to make the show more interesting. There is a lot of explaining to do in season 2 to make the show more appealing and not to waste that wonderful idea. ===spoiler alert=== I also got a few questions about the show that I don't really understand. If your thoughts on them, leave a comment below!

1. Why does Ingrid willing to sacrifice for Nathan so much? Their relationship doesn't seem to be very serious when Nathan is alive and Ingrid seem to care more about the sex than Nathan as a person. I get why she save him and she wants to keep him by giving him money but she said she wanted to marry him but clearly she doesn't love him that much. 2. I also don't understand why Nathan had to lie about remembering Nora and quickly confessed it afterwards. It just felt like a bit extra.

What We Do in the Shadows
(2014)

Ridiculously funny in a nonsense way.
The movie is written, directed and acted by Jemaine Clement and Take Waititi. They are both very talented and Taika Waititi is one of my favourite directors, all the movies directed by him have his unique childlike feature which is fun to watch and uplifting. This movie is no different, the plot is kind of nonsense but in a cute way. The movie doesn't have a deep meaning to reflect upon, you could simply lay back and enjoy the movie. Its mockumentary style makes the vampires so relatable as if they were real and were your neighbour next door. This should attribute to the amazing actors, especially Taika Waititi, making vampires so believable. When he is interviewed in the movie, he acts awkwardly just like a normal person, who isn't used to the spotlight. The characters are all goofy and they act stupidly but you won't get annoyed. Some comedies try too hard to make you laugh and end up the character are being ridiculously stupid and unlikeable, but this isn't the case, their character's goofiness is so believable that you find their stupidity quite adorable. So, if you are having a bad day or you wanted to take your mind off of something, this is the right movie for you.

The Willoughbys
(2020)

More of a dark comedy than a cartoon for kids
The movie used children's perspective to look at the issue of child abuse. Using adorable animation and seemingly hyperbole to address the cruel scenes of child neglect, making me felt empathetic towards the Willoughbys but without messing my mood. The scenes of child neglect might feel unrealistic in the movie but sadly, it reflected the reality. So the animation is more of a dark comedy than a cartoon for kids. It made you reflect upon the topic. With such a serious topic, the animation still handled the two major elements of cartoon quite well: soundtrack and happy ending. Though the plot is predictable, you might think that it is a bit cliche. But to me, for an animation, an uplifting happy ending is more important than a plot twist. As for soundtracks, they've got Alessia Cara (the one who sang the soundtrack of Moana). So, keeping it short and simple, the soundtracks were great.

We Need to Talk About Kevin
(2011)

A very intense film, it's even scarier than a horror film
A very intense film. The story consists of two parallel storylines, one after the happening of 'the event' (I don't want to ruin the movie for those who haven't seen it) and one describing the relationship between Kevin and Eva from the start. The two storylines make you kept wondering and picking up clues of what horrible thing had happened that leads to such a miserable life for Eva at the same time. I basically hold my breath for the whole movie.

The movie was presented in a dream-like way. With the help of these nightmare-like effects, Tilda Swinton (Eva) was great in portraying her personal struggle of how to be a loving mother to Kevin whom she was afraid of and the anxieties she was facing every day. You can easily relate to her character. Another highlight of the movie was Jasper Newell (young Kevin), the way he looks straight at you just creep me out a little bit.

This psychological thriller was more of a horror film, it is even scarier than a horror film, I must say. After all, humans are the scariest and most horrible creature in the world, who I'm saying here wasn't Kevin but the public. Although we had little knowledge of the whole picture, we just couldn't resist standing on the moral high ground and judge others. We had no idea of what harm we are bringing to the ones involved or it is simply not one of our concerns. In the movie, the public often judges Eva for her sins of raising a devil-like child, without knowing that Kevin behaves like this since he was at a young age, it might be a psychological disorder. Eva had tried to love him but she couldn't help herself to be afraid of him. She tried doing her best in being a mother, yet the public was not only marginalizing her but also physically harming her. That's horrible because they are doing terrible things to her without knowing that they might be wrong. Kevin also doesn't know or care about the impact but he had an anti-social personality disorder (I assume) as his excuse, so what's ours?

Snatches: Moments from Women's Lives
(2018)

A reflective and worth watching show
Each episode is around 10-15mins and it is a monologue by a woman like those you see in theatres (the show collaborated with Royal Court Theatre). The series used both theatrical and cinematographic effects to show you the protagonist's point of view. At first, I thought it might be a bit bored giving the fact that I don't usually watch talk shows and let alone monologues but it turns out to be quite intriguing and reflective. Needless to say, the actresses are amazing with Jodie Comer being one of them. Although there are little movements, they mostly just sat or stand there to tell the story, you could really picture it in your head. They act with their voices and their bodies, without any interactions with others but still, you don't feel like there is something missing. Some might say that feminism is all over the show (sounding like it's something bad) but not only women's rights are discussed, but also the society's pathological side. We are taught to avoid those who might threaten us and we felt that hiding is the right thing to do. We despise those who get themselves in trouble because of not avoiding these dangers. Yes, they might not have done a good job in protecting themselves but why blame the victim when we should focus our heat on the predators. With this being our social norms and those who might be a threat to us take control of the society, but the series makes me realized this social norm is distorted. We should not be hiding because we are not doing anything wrong, we should make those who endanger us hide and be afraid of the consequences of their actions. We should not be scare of them, and we don't have to if we stand together and take back the control of society. The series is so worth watching, especially in times like now, don't see this as a show that you can watch it while you're playing with your phone, you have to really watch it, and you'll see how the power of this show.
