Carambole
(2005)

Pretty good Swedish crime film!
This film is based upon the book with the same name, by Håkan Nesser, one of Swedens most appreciated "crime-authors". The movie is a part of a series of six movies shot in eight months, all based on Nesser-books, but you don't have to have read or seen any of them before to enjoy this one.

I read the book a couple of years ago and really liked it, so I was looking forward to this one. It has potential on the paper, a good story and good actors, Sven Wollter as Van Veeteren and Peter Andersson are always worth seeing.

Carambole is the story of a doctor, in love and happy, who one rainy night accidentally hits a young boy with his car and drives away when he sees the boy is dead. Some days later he receives a letter telling him that someone knows what he did, and want money for his silence. And after that it just gets messier for the good doctor.

As kind of a side story, we get to follow the retired officer Van Veeteren and his struggle to solve the murder of his son and get to know his pregnant daughter-in-law.

Carambole is a dark story. It focuses more on the feelings of the characters than the action and mysteries, and that is what makes it good. I really cared for the people, and from that you really care about the story and the ending (which I didn't care much for, but I won't say anything about it). Sven Wollter and Kajsa Reingardt both do a brilliant job. It is a movie well worth watching!!!

Weeds
(2005)

Absolutely lovely!!!
"Weeds" is absolutely lovely. I just finished the third episode, and so far it is one of the best shows I've seen.

It really has it all. The acting is superb! Mary-Louise Parker plays Nancy Botwin, a woman with two sons who suddenly becomes a widow and has to struggle to raise and support two sons and the family's high living standard. She becomes the rich LA neighborhood's pot dealer. The characters are interesting, the dialog feels natural and it's just so charming. I love all the little secrets these strange, rich people have! But I do hate the song in the beginning =) I guess it has some kind of function based on the lyrics, but it's truly awful.

I really hope this comes to Sweden some day, for the rest of the country to enjoy!!
