The Cuckoo
(2024)

Good psycho drama
I came across this drama on channel 5 & sm quite bemused by dome of the reviews, I thought the plot was good & well written, so the number plates don't match! It's obviously filmed in Ireland so what. The actors involved are excellent, Clare goose I've seen in dramas for some years & gives a good performance, Jill halfpenny is also a good actress. The lead actor was also very good, he's been in lots of good dramas notably inspector George Gently. I found the plot believable a woman grieving for a daughter she believes to be alive though died when she was born. I would recommend you give it a go it's a lot better than the BBC are producing at the moment.

Manifest
(2018)

Great for insomnia
I saw this on Netflix & the trailer looked good, but what a mistake, where to start awful acting soap opera acting, the first 6 episodes made sense but typically with American series they drag out a boring story. It started out as Sci-fi but ended by being religious. The storyline becomes boring because the writers have dragged it out 4 series with an average of 20 episodes is ridiculous. This could have been brilliant as a 12 episode series. I was glad only series 1 & 4 are available on Netflix I probably would have given up the will to live. I believe there are 62 episodes in total. Don't bother believe me! Life is short. If you by any chance suffer with insomnia this is for you.

Wicked Little Letters
(2023)

Disappointing true events
Went with my partner to see this film as I had heard of the poison pen letters story based on real events, unfortunately the casting in a lot of the roles let the film down. This is a period drama set in southern England in 1920, an Irish woman cohabiting with a black man unmarried would not have been tolerated, & racism would have been the forefront then, then there's the Asian police officer with an English name the name this story is depicting a very strange choice, a black woman working as a postmistress wouldn't be heard of in 1920, let alone a black judge presiding over the trial the first black judge was in the 1960's forty years later than this, badly researched, this could have been an 9/10 film, had the producers not gone down the PC road but alas history seems to be what film makers think it should be not what it actually was or is.

Anton & Giovanni's Adventures in Sicily
(2023)

Puts me off going there
A load of garbage the BBC again wasting licence fee on this rubbish. School boy antics & totally scripted don't waste 3 hours of your life on this, the Spanish trip they are now on ( March 2024 ) is even worse. It's a shame the heads of department at the BBC allow this nonsense to be made, it's cheap television playing on the strickly come dancing popularity I find Anton De Beke really irritating. Where are all the talented people gone! There bad attempt at comedy is abysmal, the crew must have found days filming this nonsense nauseating. Let's hope this is quickly killed off & hopefully money better spent.

Grantchester
(2014)

Gone off the boil
I was an avid viewer to this series but unfortunately when James Norton left after the 4th series it should have been shelved. The script writers seem to be writing as if it was the 90's rather than the mid fifties. Casting directors seem to think Cambridge in the mid 50's was muti cultural, ethnic minorities with perfect English accents were very scarce. Also gay people were not open as this is portrayed though Leonard did go to prison but a senior detective won't be as friendly purely because wasn't done. Men didn't hug each other either, they were very macho & conservative. If you're going to do any period drama it should reflect what Britain was like then, instead of trying to be politically correct. This seems the norm today.

The Madame Blanc Mysteries: Christmas Special
(2023)
Episode 0, Season 3

Madame blanc does it again
I'm so pleased to see a third series of this camp detective series I've enjoyed the previous series so much, Jeremy & Judith are my favourites they really camp it up. The Christmas special has started well so looking forward to seeing more. I love the scenery in Gozo, though I know it's supposed to be southern France but I've spent a lot of time there & actually met Robin Asquith on a plane from Malta to the UK. I know people will knock this show but it's just fun & games don't try too hard to analyse the plot or look for bafta winning performances you won't get them. It's just afternoon entertainment.

Armchair Cinema: Regan
(1974)
Episode 2, Season 1

Regan great pilot movie
Always been a fan of the series, great scripts good actors & very believable. I love the no nonsense of the 70's the coppers just got on with it. This movie pilot gives you great insight in the forthcoming 4 seasons of the sweeney in my opinion the best cop show British television has produced. It's great to see a young Maureen Lipman, in a less glamorous role as Regans bit on the side. Great viewing! I highly recommend the series & the 2 spin off movies there great viewing too. Sweeney, & Sweeney 2. Pure nostalgia of a by gone age, love the cars the clothes & all the cigarettes & Smokey pubs.

Obsession
(2023)

I wasn't obsessed
Just watched this 4part drama on Netflix, Obsession, a rework of a film from the 90s starring Jeremy irons, totally unbelievable & a waste of a good cast, I have liked the work of Richard Armitage before, so was looking forward to this updated version, I was so disappointed the actors all over acting, a poor script & direction I wouldn't bother even going past episode one. The son is supposed to be a doctor is more like a spoilt teenager, it's all very soft pornographic there's no presence in the main characters there cold & unbelievable you feel like shaking them both. Please don't waste your time you'll never get it back!

23 Walks
(2020)

A charming film of a chance meeting
I'm a big fan of Alison Steadman, & David Johns ever since I saw him in I Danial Blake, so when I saw this listed on Netflix I thought I would give it a go. I found it so truthful of life in London today people getting on with their daily life, people of a certain age who are alone & lonely a chance meeting of two lonely people walking their dogs leads to friendships & eventually romance. Along the way obstacles keep these to people apart but love has no barriers they say. A charming movie for a rainy day, great acting & script. I rated it highly as the characters were believable & touching moments.

Professor T
(2021)

Quirky mystery series
I just happened to come across this series as I enjoy anything Ben Miller takes on. I found this series really enjoyable he plays a professor of criminology at Cambridge he has a eccentric nature & is obsessed with cleanliness, he wears gloves all of the time & helps the local constabulary solve crimes as a consultant. He has an equally eccentric mother played brilliantly by France De La Tour. He has a direct secretary who organises his work & social life. The banter between himself & the detectives is equally strange he kind of upstages them making them feel slightly annoyed with him. The female detective is also a former student for whom he has a lot of time for unlike her boss, DI Rabbit. Each episode is a different crime. I would highly recommend to give it a go.

Wednesday
(2022)

The best of the Addams family
I found this series on Netflix, as I love the original series of the sixties & the movies of the 90's but this series following the exploits of young Wednesday, the daughter of Gomez & mortisha Addams highly entertaining & original. It's a great story full of suspense & horror with witty humour & a great cast, even the original films Wednesday Christina Ricci pops up as a character. Good actors & good acting make this a must see. I have given it 10 out of 10. Catherine Zeta Jones is great as Mortisha. Tim Burton is executive producer adding his genius to the production, the best series I've seen in 2022.

Whitstable Pearl
(2021)

Boring mystery series
I was looking forward to this series as I have frequently visited this quaint seaside town called Whitstable, for which this series is based. I have also read the books that Julie Wassmer has written that this series is supposed to be based on. I was so disappointed as the characters are nothing like in her books. Firstly Pearl is supposed to be about 40 years old with jet black hair & grey eyes, Kerry Goldiman the lead actor is more like fifty, frumpy, blond & could do with a good scrub! The love interest the police inspector is supposed to be blond & middle class the actor playing him, seems more like a wide boy with a cockney accent than a cop. This actor is mixed race, which isn't a problem but isn't like the character in her books. The stories are supposed to be mysteries & based on the author's stories, but only a couple of the original stories are used, bizarre. Finally the plots are more soap opera than a detective story which is sad, I'd say the author must be disappointed in this cheaply produced nonsense certainly not good enough for mainstream channels.

Karen Pirie
(2022)

Could have been good
Just wanted to first say this could have been really good, but firstly the positives a good script, great locations. It's different as well. Unfortunately there are many negatives. Firstly it's far too long, 3 episodes & 4 & a half hours on one story, could have been shortened to 3 one hour episodes. The main character is far too young, quite arrogant & wouldn't be senior enough to be in charge of such a high profile case. Then there's the casting directors & production company who seem to have to include individuals from ethnic minority backgrounds, plus mixed race relationships/ marriages into the equation. It seems these days if it's not film's, series's, or commercial's it's not a true reflection of today's society. I'm not against it, I just don't like it rammed down my throat with everything in today's programming. I don't know if ITV have commissioned more, I wouldn't bother personally.

I Came By
(2022)

A good British film.
Sat down with my partner to watch a movie found this on Netflix & it sounded quite good. I can't understand the criticism of some of the reviews, we found it suspenseful, with a good plot, much better than the re hashed Hollywood rubbish spurned out today. Hugh bonneville out of his comfort zone gave a great performance sly, clever & devious. The supporting cast was equally good. I think some people analyse everything today instead of just seeing something that's entertaining that's what making movies is all about, bringing in politics or so called PC attitudes don't say much about people who watch just watch films to criticise them. I would recommend watching.

Miss Willoughby and the Haunted Bookshop
(2021)

Awful made for TV mystery
I looked at this made for TV movie, thinking the story sounded interesting, especially the good cast Kelsey Grammer, Tara Fitzgerald & Caroline Quentin. This movie is sooo boring, totally unbelievable storyline the main character a posh lady of the manor, inherits a large country estate after her parents die tragically. Her guardian looks after her until she's old enough to take over as she was only a girl when she inherited. I can't go on but you get the picture, you wait an eternity for a suspicious death, by then you can't be bothered to go on. All in all don't bother wasting an hour & a half of your life on this drivel.

Close
(2019)

Good action thriller set in North Africa
I saw the rating for this movie but gave it a go, as I like the work of Noomi Rapace. ( girl with the dragon tattoo) I thought some of the ratings unfair it deserves a higher rating, it wasn't predictable most African countries are corrupt, as I have visited many including Morocco where this movie was filmed. The acting was believable, & script was well done, people try too much to analyse a movie this was just entertaining & not over the top. Definitely worth a watch 9/10 is a fair rating.

Rules of the Game
(2022)

Good drama/thriller
I have just watched rules of the game on the BBC I found this 4 part drama/ mystery really entertaining, I don't know why others have rated it so low, I don't know what they were watching. The cast was excellent especially Maxine Peake & Alison Steadmans performances. The plot is plausible, I suspect this happens in many corporations around the world. The script was well written I would give it a go, but perhaps see all episodes before commenting to give the plot time to develop. I don't agree with other's sentiments on this drama, I would highly recommend.

Brighton
(2019)

Gives Brighton a bad name
A waste of talented actors, I'm surprised they agreed to appear in this drivel. Typical stereotypes bad cockney accents & not a good story. It could have been good but the screenplay was badly done, & direction poor to say the least, I presume as it was made in 2019, but realised in 2021, it wasn't good enough for cinema realise. Don't bother to watch it's a waste of an hour & a half of your life!

Made in Malta
(2019)

Probably the most boring movie ever made!
I love Malta, and thought I would give this film a go, bad mistake! Scenery was lovely to see but the acting was bad, there was no chemistry between the main actors, bad dialogue, great if you're an insomniac. I just am amazed how this movie was ever made a waste of money. Don't waste an hour & 20 minutes on this rubbish, a child could write better & act too.

Dalgliesh
(2021)

Good interpretation of the P.D.James novels.
Watched the first two episodes with excitement, as a fan of P. D James I found the plot slightly rushed, but performances excellent Bertie Carvel is a fine Dalgliesh. This period series is done well, my only criticism is the episodes are too short. Cinematography, location and all round acting performances done well. We are told nothing of the lead character's past unfortunately, which means if you haven't read her books, your at a miss. Looking forward to the rest of the series though, just hoping the characters develop along the way. The series filmed in the eighties & nineties which were longer, starring Roy Marsden, are also worth seeing, but are slightly dated.
