The Brothers Sun
(2024)

The Brothers Sun - 6/10 - Could Have Been So Much Better
The Brothers Sun could have been so much more. It starts out with a lot of promise. The first four episodes are very good. A nice mix of action and some comedy. The problems start once family dynamics enter the mix.

Then the show just can't decide on what it wants to be and the last four episodes are an uneven mix of action, badly placed comedy and either over acted or misplaced drama. The main characters sway between the lines given but even they can't save some scenes.

Hardly the most original of stories, and the premise was really good until it wasn't. Probably enough here for a Season 2, but it will need to improve significantly to get a Season 3.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania
(2023)

A Green Screen Mess
Where do you start with Quantumania?

It's an absolute mess of a movie and the demise of the Marvel Universe speeds up.

The biggest threat to the multiverse and beyond isn't Kang or Thanos or Dr. Doom or whoever.

It's the writing committees that have pretty much written everything since End Game.

It's been downhill since then with a few decent moments in between.

Quantumania is terrible. Wait for it to show on Disney if you must. Or, you could do yourself a favour and give it a wide berth. It has none of the charm of the previous two films and absolute zero jeopardy.

There is nothing on the line because Kang can jump back and forward through time through multiple personalities. So nothing matters.

Andor
(2022)

Andor - Episode 1-3 - Impressive, Dark, Gritty and so not Star Wars
Andor episodes 1-3 quick review.

First off, watch all three episodes back-to-back. Together they're more a movie setting up the series. Separately, they're quite short and believe it or not can be a little slow.

They fit better together and run better as a back-to-back.

That being said, it's good. It's very good. This is a darker more adult take on Star Wars, with a PG rating. The set pieces are spectacular and you can see immediately that it's filmed in the real world with real settings and not in the Volume.

If you're familiar with Rogue One then you know why you're watching this. If you're not then you need to watch it. It'll set the scene for a less black & white version of the Star Wars universe which Andor has so comfortably taken over.

With no spoilers being given here, it's a dark and gritty spy thriller where the good guys step over the boundary line when needs must.

Great start after 3 episodes.

The Sandman
(2022)

The Sandman - Brings You a Dream
The Sandman is the best fantasy show on TV or streaming in 2022.

The world building is supreme and it takes fantasy and super heroes to another level completely.

Part of the beauty of this show is that its completely unafraid to take its time to tell its tale. Amazing characters litter every episode and the entire gamut of despair, desire, destiny and dream is hit on the way to telling the tale.

One episode about truth and lies is truly horrific while an episode about death is purely beautiful.

The Sandman is an absolute hit of a show that builds an amazing world that one will want to visit again and again.

The Expanse
(2015)

The Expanse - The best Sci-Fi Show Ever?
Star Wars is aimed at kids. Star Trek is aimed at teens. The Expanse is for adults.

A superb show with a fantastic group of actors that give their characters incredible depth. Brilliant action, acting, and a roller coaster story line that just keeps getting better and better.

Dark
(2017)

Dark - Epic Season 1 & 2 left out of time by dull Season 3
What started out as a time travelling epic centered around families instead of super heroes was just crushed by a Season 3 that tried so hard to close off all its loose ends that it literally didn't have enough time to tell a proper story.

Season 1 & 2 were fantastic but really only set the scene for a Season 3 that meandered so badly and all over space and time in an effort to close out this tale.

The story became so convoluted it was almost impossible to follow and impossible to empathise with the characters any longer.

One really didn't care who was light or who was shadow or good or bad, I only cared about finishing this because I'd put in so much effort to get to the conclusion.

Then I wished for a time machine so I could go back and tell myself not to bother in the first place.

S1 - 8/10 S2 - 8/10 S3 - 2/10

OVERALL 6/10.

Thor: Love and Thunder
(2022)

Thor: Love & Thunder - Not Worthy just Cringeworthy
I think everyone would agree that Thor: Ragnarok was the best Thor film by a good distance and one of the best Marvel movies.

Thor: Love and Thunder is a very, very poor follow up. The Avengers: End Game restrictions on the narrative of Ragnarok have been removed and it seems that Taika Waititi has been given full creativity for this shambolic follow up.

Awful humor and poorly placed jokes litter the film. Shoddy set pieces, terrible CGI and a really bad story ruin this follow up. More so when you compare it to the last Thor film.

The film is filled with forced McGuffins from the first minute as the A to B story is forced from point to point. There is no jeopardy in the film whatsoever.

Considering that the Gorr the God Butcher run and the Jane Foster run are considered seminal in comicdom, this film has done more damage to Thor on and off screen than if it hadn't been made at all.

Actually, the best thing about the film is the soundtrack. And they didn't even get that right with a handful of Guns and Roses songs and not even a mention of Lady Lightning by Bang Camaro. Probably because its on the Peacemaker soundtrack.

Actually, go watch that instead.

WandaVision
(2021)

Too Early to Tell After 2 Episodes
6/10 after two episodes is fair. Anything higher, especially the 9/10 reviews you're seeing or the 1/10, are just exaggeration at this early point of the show.

We all know the premise, they're stuck in some Matrix/Truman Show/Insert your own version type of experiment and are trying to understand where they are. The problem is, despite the short run time, 22 mins, is that the first two episodes dragged and are relying upon little Easter eggs to keep you hooked. It's pretty boring but you know/hope it will get better. Disney & Marvel have invested too much for their first Marvel show to be a flop... The Mandalorian it is not. And it could have been.

El Chapo
(2017)

A Mexican Soap Opera Meets Narcos.
Avoid if you're a fan of good acting, good storylines and a good show. There are far better shows out there than to waste your time with this. Check out Breaking Bad, Narcos and The Wire for three vastly superior shows.

Dunkirk
(2017)

Masterpiece with Almost Unbearable Tension
Dunkirk is masterpiece. It's rare that a film can be almost unbearable to watch because of the tension involved, but Christopher Nolan achieves this dramatically. The tension ratchets up and up right from the very first moment and raises with relentless gravity. The acting is top-notch, direction spectacular and the story-line, simple as it is, grips and never lets go.

Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi
(2017)

It's a Good Film, Just Not a Great Film (Spoiler Free)
Look, The Last Jedi is good, it's just not great. If you're a Star Wars fan and thought The Force Awakens was a little too close to Star Wars - A New Hope in terms of story line then TLJ is more of the same. Effects are good, Daisy Ridley is the undoubted star and Adam Driver brings a complexity that is often missing from the main protagonist. It's recommended for the Big Screen and it's no Attack of the Clones (6.6), but it isn't Empire (8.8) either and in the end it falls somewhere between the two.
