Downton Abbey
(2010)

Slow burn, mostly realistic and enjoyable
When I started watching Downton Abbey, I already knew it was a popular and well liked series, but the slow pace initially put me off and I decided to move on after some initial episodes, but then after having nothing to watch, I went back to watching DA, and but this time I didn't really expect much from the series. Only then, to my surprise, I started enjoying it, and now that I have almost completed all 6 seasons, this turned out to be one of my favorite shows.

DA is great to watch for relaxed viewing. It is not something you stop other plans and prioritize; this is a type of series that you watch at leisure to relax at the end of the day, without having to think much, and so putting your mind at ease. Once you realize that and set right expectations, you'll devour DA and also enjoy it.

Just like how many people put Friends or the Office running in background once a year just to chill, this is one such series, but it is a drama and not comedy. If you like DA, I also recommend "Anne with an E" on Netflix. They are not related at all; but they evoke similar feelings and are easy to watch.

Heroine is super hot, rest is terrible
It is a cheap copy of several hollywood films.

The final twist and ending sequence is ripped off from The Dark Knight Rises, and they look ridiculously bad. They also forced a Khaidi parody scenes in the climax.

Heroine is the saving grace throughout the movie because her acting is decent and she's very attractive. Although she's either serious or looks worried most of the time, she still manages to look hot and seductive. Hope she gets more roles.

Vennela Kishore's character doesn't really evoke laughter. The director was probably going for "so bad that it's actually funny" type of comedy, but they didn't quite reach that level of bad, so ultimately most scenes feel only stupid, not funny.

Watch it if you don't have anything else to watch.

Gaami
(2024)

Illogical and disappointing
Had high hopes on Gaami, especially after watching teaser many months ago and trailer recently.

All that hype and hopes came crashing down as the film progressed. It was suprising because the director seemed like a smart and talented guy during the promotions. It was disappointing to see how the director assumed people would believe anything he shows.

Clearly, one sequence was inspired by Dark Knight Rises well climbing scene and one sequence by Shawshank redemption. These can be ignored, but illogical scenes are hard to ignore, as they totally ruined the movie watching experience.

Devadasi part was emotional and good. Medical facility sequences feel claustrophobic and are uneasy to watch. Himalayas scenes are illogical. What's with boomerangs and ropes. Why the F would there be a lion in himalayas. They could have put mountain lion or wolf instead.

Very Disappointing, but glad that I watched on OTT and not in theater.

The Faceless Lady
(2024)

10/10 for the attempt and pushing boundaries
Ever since I got Quest 2, I have been thinking of how immersive movies will get in the future, using VR. We are finally there!

This is a TV series that is not just 3D but also immersive. It feels like we are watching the characters by standing beside them. The fact that this is a horror series and take places in a castle adds more depth, atmosphere and mystery to the plot.

I have only watched first 2 episodes and thought they were awesome. There weren't any loud sound effects and jumpscares (until episode 2.) Jumpscares in VR can be too scary, as it can feel real, so let's see how scary future episodes get. The acting is not top notch, but it is decent. The actress in blue jeans looks hot in VR.

I hope more movies and shows are created for VR watching.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith
(2024)

Title was a BAIT
With each episode, the focus turns more and more towards the drama and relationship stuff. The title was a cheap shot at easy publicity.

I didn't have much expectations given how Amazon always effs up its productions - like it did with Lord of the Rings and Wheel of Time. Their mantra is probably "throw money to make more money" rather than good scripts and bringing together talented people who are passionate about cinema.

If we honestly take it for what it is, it feels mediocre but definitely not bad. However, when we start with expectations because of the title Mr & Mrs Smith and assumptions on how a spy series would be, then it is bound to feel like a disastrous show!

Month of Madhu
(2023)

Art movie with very real characters
I don't know how to rate this movie. I gave an 8, but I'm not sure whether that is accurate or not. I think art movies makes us feel that way.

The characters are so real that I felt their emotions. It was like seeing how couple of our friends were during their twenties, and what they have turned into 20 years later.

Thoughts after watching this film: Why do we say someone is flawed? Why do we say a character in a book or a movie is a flawed character? What is the oppsite of flawed person and does such person really exist? Why can't we just say making mistakes or taking bad decisions or falling for an addiction is just being HUMAN. Being flawed is being human.

Salaar: Cease Fire - Part 1
(2023)

Avg 1st half, great 2nd half, mind blowing ending
Average First Half Great Second Half Mind blowing Ending

Firstly, even before getting into the story discussion, I want to say this is a film Prabhas deserved. His personality and screen presence was a treat to watch after such a long time.

Going into story and screenplay, Prashant Neel had great opening childhood story and great interval bang/high-point, but rest of the first-half was filler scenes which feels unnecessary and repetitive. There are two fights in first half, and they should have been combined, with all the scenes in-between chopped off. It would not have made much difference. Just because Neel had certain pre-interval sequence in mind, first half was extended with boring scenes. We just wait for things to happen and nothing happens till the pre-interval sequence.

Second half is where fun begins. We see a different world with a bunch of characters, and this world-building is so good that it feels like why didn't this part start sooner in first half itself. Fights in second half are very violent but they are interesting, unlike the routine slow-mo fights in the first-half.

The ending was mind-blowing with some unexpected story details and a hint as to what we can expect in Salaar Part 2. It was definitely inspired by Game of Thrones - you'll know when you think about it.

To conclude the review, Salaar Part 1 is a decent film with in-form Prabhas, great background score, and Prashanth Neel's signature screenplay+editing style.

Young Sheldon
(2017)

Enjoyable and happy show
Not many talk about this, but it's a great light-hearted show.

I'm guessing the reason why it didn't find many audience is the fact that it is about a kid, but it's not exactly targeted towards children. Adults might pass thinking it's a kids show. So, no one ends up watching it.

I haven't watched Big Bang Theory excpet for few snippets, so didn't have much expectations prior to watching this. But Young Sheldon series is a family comedy drama and I love how they explore all the family members instead of solely focusing on Sheldon.

There are light-hearted shows that we love to watch from time to time like friends, the office, gilmore girls, and young sheldon falls in that category. Give it a try.

Hollywood
(2020)

Moved me in ways I did not expect!
When I started watching it, little did I know that I'll cry - not just once but more than 4 times while watching this series. What a moving tale and wonderful characters it has.

There was bit too many adult scenes in the initial episodes. If I wasn't in my good mood, I would have stopped watching the series midway just because of the amount of mindless sex scenes. But I kept going and then found myself fully immersed in the story and rooting for the characters very soon, which I did not expect for a series based on making of films at Hollywood. I was prepared for things like rich people wasting away days drinking, having affairs, not giving a damn about anything, but the series didn't turn out that way and that surprised me.

Episodes 4 to 7 are brilliant. Just brilliant! I urge people to watch this - it is still relevant today. Some characters show us how our stories are important, why it is necessary to be more courageous and make our presence felt irrespective of whether we win or not.

Medici
(2016)

Underrated series! Watch this is you liked Game of Thrones.
Ever since Game of Thrones ended, I have been searching for a series that would have similar impact with it's story and characters, but sadly nothing came close. Even high budget series like House of the Dragon, Lord of the Rings and Wheel of Time fell flat.

Then I came across Medici while browsing Netflix aimlessly in hopes of finding something interesting. To be honest, Steve Madden (Actor who played Rob in GoT) is the reason I started watching this. I love historical fiction, especially when they are set in medieval or close to medieval times. Medici in particular has period setting, multi faceted characters, genuine human emotions and king like figures which gave me a feeling of GoT.

I loved it so much that I learnt about Italian history post watching this. The art, the palaces, the churches, Popes, artists, and how Medici directly caused the Renaissance Period. Florence, Rome, Milan, Naples - all are my travel bucket list now.

The only thing I felt difficult to digest was the change of characters. Since this is a multi-generational story, after Season 1, there is a 20-30 year jump and Season 2 starts with bunch of new characters. I found it difficult to leave the people whom I loved in S1 and move on to their grand children, but I kept going and it paid off it S3 where I was totally invested. I did see other reviewers complain regarding the same, but trust me, once you get accustomed to the characters, you'll feel that S2 and S3 are as good as S1.

I feel this is an underrated show and would love for more people to watch it and enjoy just like I did.

Mad
(2023)

Light and happy college film. Watch it!
Watched it on Netflix without any expectations and thoroughly enjoyed it! Even though there are several movies set in college phase, this one is easily one of the best I watched in recent times. The overall tone of the movie is bright, happy and uplifting. No unnecessary drama or sad scenes. Kudos to the director.

A lot of people use the phrase "out-and-out comedy" to describe their films, but it is rarely true. However, this film justifies that phrase - the entire movie is filled with fun and hilarious sequences, from start to end. I personally enjoyed all the funny sequences involving the college principal.

There are some funny dialogues involving foul language, so it may NOT be the right movie to watch with complete family, but I have to say we all used those words with our college buddies, so it was very relatable and brought back college memories.

All the actors were fantastic, but Sangeeth Shoban stole the show with strong screen presence, his dialogue delivery, and what a voice man! Ram Nithin is a known face from short films and he did a great job too while looking like a chocolate boy. The only negative point from me is that the female leads were under utilized. They are all so beautiful, danced and acted very well - especially Ananthika. It would have been great if there were more scenes with them. No complains other than that.

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One
(2023)

Very well executed, BUT...
I can't help but notice how the theme and some scenes are similar to Indiana Jones Dial of Destiny.

Two keys in MI, two parts of dial in IJ Train fight with similar looking bridge blowing up in both Tiny-car chase in MI, tuk-tuk chase in IJ Mysterious object at the bottom of ocean in both

Having said that, everything is executed better in MI. I enjoyed it but would have enjoyed more if I haven't watched Indiana Jones recently.

I just wish the MI Part two is not similar to the second half of Indiana jones.

Also, I read that Cruise was furious about Oppenheimer replacing MI in 2 weeks in IMAX screens. But I watched this movie in IMAX, and was disappointed that all scenes are wide format and didn't use imax resolution. I don't understand why they are acting like MI needs to be watched on imax.

Little Soldiers
(1996)

Iconic telugu film with 90's charm, innocence and heart
This is one of my favorite movies from my childhood. The story is heartwarming, the music is soulful and the actors are iconic.

I watched it again in 2023, and it made me realize what films are about - making people feel emotions, see other people's lives, feel grateful for what we have that other characters don't.

It's disheartening that movies like this are hardly being made now. I hope the producers come up with a 4k version and release it on Netflix or Prime, because several 90's kids hold this film close to their heart and would love to show it to their children and keep it alive.

This is a beautiful movie, and it's our responsibility to cherish and pass onto next generations.

Brahmastra Part One: Shiva
(2022)

Expected a fantasy movie with a minor love track, got the opposite
Story had potential, but screenplay was bad, dialogues were worst and characters lacked depth.

Nagarjuna and Amitabh were wasted. Ranbir and Alia were really good looking. But after a point, because of bad dialogues, they look silly. Dialogues are so bad that I couldn't tell if they were deliberately dumbed down to reach the masses or if the dialogue writers are dumb.

Ayan Mukerjee is only 2 films old, and both are love stories. He should have made couple of action movies before jumping on to Brahmastra. He just isn't ready to make a movie of this scale.

The biggest issue is everyone expected this movie to be a fantasy film with a minor track but we got exact opposite. When the lead character says "Love is more powerful than Brahmastra," how can we take this film seriously?

Thor: Love and Thunder
(2022)

There's no need for this film
Of course there are few funny scenes and few visually stunning sequences. But in the end it feels empty, like we wouldn't miss anything even if this film wasn't made.

Also, I don't understand why Marvel doesn't make a proper 3D film when they have all the resources they need. Converting 2D film into 3D and then throwing it on our faces for more money is straight up cheating.

Vintage Mahesh Babu is back, BUT he is let down by bad script
My Dear Movie Friend,

This is a quintessential (usual) Mahesh Babu film, with a fun first half and message-oriented second half. Mahesh and Keerthy shine but the film is let down by it's writing. Maharshi is better than this. Although I enjoyed Mahesh's looks and performance in this film, I'm tired of seeing him in the same type of message oriented roles from last 6, 7 years. If we think about it, Mahesh Babu is already 46 years old which means he can only act in 10-15 more movies in his lifetime, and it saddens me to see his time and talent get wasted on mediocre films like this. I understand that, as a commercial hero, he is always under pressure to deliver hits, but that doesn't mean he has to stick to same type of roles for over 5 years. He rejected Sukumar's Pushpa and Sandeep Vanga's Movie which would have shown Mahesh in a never before angle. Given that his next two movies are with Trivikram and SS Rajamouli, I'm hopeful and really looking forward to seeing Mahesh in different roles.

--------- Full Review ---------

The Good ----- Mahesh Babu shines in this film. He looks like a million bucks with that slim look, fantastic hairstyle and colorful costumes. Be it the dance moves, be it the comedy scenes, we can clearly see the effort he put in. He is full of energy, positivity and charm. Whether he got inspired by the scenes in the film or he is in a happy phase of his life and that brought out the best in him, we don't know. But, whatever the reason is, he is fantastic in this film and reminds us of the vintage Mahesh Babu.

Keerthy Suresh is a surprise. She got an unexpected character with different shades and she nails it. She looks so beautiful in eye popping costumes and acts very convincingly. She totally dominates Mahesh Babu in the Ma Ma Mahesha song.

Cinematographer and Costume Designer have done a fantastic job. Thaman's songs are good especially Kalavathi, but the background score, although decent, isn't on the same level as his previous movies like Akhanda and Bheemla Nayak.

The Bad ---- Who failed miserably are two people - fight master and the screenplay writer. Fights are just bad and boring. If the hero's introduction fight itself is uninteresting, you can imagine how other fight sequences will be. While watching fights, you will just wait for them to get over.

The weakest piece of this film is the writing. First half is good with fun scenes, but the director (who is also the writer) had no clue on how to handle second half. The story definitely had potential as it deals with a real life issue, but many unwanted sequences spoil the mood. For example, (contains spoilers) villain lives in a mansion in Vizag but it is shown as if this mansion is surrounded by 2 small villages full of goons who act as guards for villain. That entire driving the truck thru the villages is a stupid sequence and it's unnecessary. In order to put some fun scenes in an otherwise serious second half, Parasuram wrote some cringiest sequences between Mahesh, Keerthy and Subbaraj. We definitely don't expect such irresponsible and senseless scenes in a star hero's film. There are few good dialogues that make us think, but then again bad sequences distract us from the main subject. Parasuram should work with a writing team instead of writing screenplay and dialogues on his own.

Conclusion ------ This is a quintessential Mahesh Babu film, with a fun first half and message-oriented second half.

Thanks for reading. Have a good day and enjoy watching movies!

Ye Maaya Chesave
(2010)

A love story that will stay in our hearts for many years to come..
If I have to say just one word to describe "Ye Maaya Chesave", I would say - Classic!

The feeling I get when I watch it now is no different from what I got when I watched it for the first time 6 years back, when the movie released.

The soul of the film is the background music and the songs by A.R.Rahman. Right from the beginning titles to the end credits, we will experience out-of-the-world music. Music alone takes this movie to a whole new level. Take a moment to appreciate A.R.Rahman's talent, because I'm afraid India wouldn't see such a great artist ever again.

Beautiful cinematography by Manoj Paramahamsa, Samantha and Naga Chaitanya's brilliant performances, simple yet haunting dialogs, the depth in Jessie and Karthik's characters, sensible story & screenplay and top-notch direction - each element complements every other element so perfectly, making this an experience rather than just a film.

This movie holds a special place in my heart, just because of the fact that I can relate to many scenes and how it effortlessly transports me to my first-love days every time I watch it. I'm really grateful to all the people involved in making this movie.

There are two versions of this film. Telugu (Ye Maaya Chesave) and Tamil (Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya) versions, which are same except for the ending. The ending drastically changes our view towards the film. I personally like the Tamil ending as it's close to reality. I believe that's what makes our first love special (you'll know when you watch the movie). Having said that, I loved watching both versions.

If you are watching the Telugu version, just make sure to watch the climax of the Tamil version as well.

Daredevil
(2015)

Food for hungry Batman fans!
I hate to compare Daredevil with Batman, but there were several instances where I felt like I'm watching a Batman movie. If you are a Batman fan, there are high chances you might feel like Daredevil is Batman's story, except that he's not a billionaire.

I wanted to know if Daredevil is actually a rip-off of Batman. After a short research, I found out that Daredevil comics became popular after Frank Miller started writing them. Frank Miller has been a Batman fan, but didn't/couldn't write Batman comics initially. Daredevil was written first, then Miller went on to write some of the best selling Batman comics. It is Miller's style and story setup which makes Daredevil and Batman seem similar. If you like Batman, you might like Daredevil as well.

Regarding the series, the performances are excellent if not mind blowing, the story is very gripping and everything fall into place making The Daredevil a good watch.
