Venus
(2022)

Decent!
Venus is a well put together film about a go go dancer making way with a bag of stolen drugs to her estranged sisters apartment only to find out that their is a much more sinister plot within the building.

The cinematography is absolutely ace, despite there being dark scenes we can clearly make out what is happening so major props to the lighting crew and the colorist ontop of the D. P.

The acting is pretty damn good all around, nothing pulls you out of the film and it's all believeable.

The special effects with the blood and gore was pretty awesome too, some of the cgi blood was a bit noticeable but the make-up department definitely helped with the practical to make it blend better.

I would say the only annoying factor with this film was the cgi planets, this kind of took me out the film as well as the weird piano motif when the sister and daughter have emotional moments together.

All in all I would say this is a great film to spend your time with alone and with the lights off.

The Offer

Sleeper Hit of 2022
I only discovered this now 3/4 the way through January 2023 and had my brother not of been watching it I would have never heard of it.

All I can say is wow, wow, wow! If you are anything at all interesting in the art of making a movie from start to finish this will inspire you ten-fold! The cast, characters, production, and cinematography are all on point. It's shot like a movie and each episode plays out as such.

The reason why this is good is simple (and also overlooked by modern media); Struggle. Every episode is compounded with struggle to get the movie made and it keeps escalating. There is never a dull moment in the story and it will have you wanting to watch the next episode until it's complete.

In all honesty I wish every film-maker could see this. It would inspire them to finish their movies and want to work at paramount, although I can't say that the work environment is anything like what was portrayed in the show, even if they make a damn good job of what it could be like.

9/10 with 1 point lost for making me watch the godfather for the 900th time.

Skinamarink
(2022)

WTF?
My hometown isn't exactly known for great movies being produced there, nevermind having great film-makers, so I was hoping that this film would at least break that curse due to the traction that it has been getting.

I must also add some positives here and add congrats to the film-maker for completing their project. Making a movie is no small task, on any budget.

Sadly that's where the positives begin and end. I've never in my life seen something so boring, I think I've enjoyed watching paint dry more. The shots are lifeless, the sound is horrendous, and my god what in the heck was that final shot?

This is a new low in filmmaking. It had nothing redeeming about it, even the most bad films have something you can get out of it but this is just some half assed b.s. Labelled as artsy.

If someone could break the curse of terrible filmmaking from my city that would be great, unfortunately that is not the case with Skinamarink.

Stay away, stay far away!

Come True
(2020)

A Trippy Slow-burn
There have been quite a few slow-burn type movies coming through the grape-vine and the majority have been boring or way too slow with minimal story (looking at you synchronic).

Come True was filmed in my home-town of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. For those that live here you'll know that not too many films get made here and the ones that do can be subpar at best due to budget's being constrained or lack of vision.

Might I say that this film has an extraordinary vision looking into the deep recesses of the mind. It takes a deep look at nightmares and without giving too much away visualizes them in a trippy 90's CRT format that you have to see in order to believe. The renders and compositing that the VFX team did is beyond chilling to the bone and I highly recommend paying extra attention to those sections in order to get the most out the movie.

The ending is a bit weird though and I have to mention it seemed a bit rushed for a chase sequence. I would have loved to see this extended a bit with more added tension.

Case-in-point not every movie is perfect. Come True makes those imperfections work for itself and delivers a coherent and intriguing story about dreams and how they affect us. Highly recommend to watch while smoking a joint and letting the soundtrack take you on a trip.

1917
(2019)

Amazing work of art!
Gripping, visceral, engrossing, and absolutely captivating are all words that I would use to describe this masterfully created work of art. This is a movie that has both atmosphere and action, a combination that pulls you in and makes you forget about who, where, and what you are for the entire duration. War films have been done to death but 1917 brings something new to the table with its spectacle of one-shot cinematics. I counted a total of three times where they used intelligent transitions to make the story flow.

Well worth your time, if not to experience the war but rather to experience the art of the directors vision. 9/10

Ratter
(2015)

Worth the watch but not without it's problems
Let me start by saying that I rather enjoyed watching this movie. I understand that a lot of people do not like the so-called "found- footage" type of stuff however I thought it suited this movie rather well. At times the camera angles are a bit hard to look at but you have to remember that the story is being told through the eyes of an internet stalker / serial killer.

The characters in this film were believable and the pacing of the film was tight with great albeit simple writing. It is certainly tailored toward the younger generation (16-25).

The message conveyed within this movie is the most valuable thing that is has going for it and that may be to always watch what you do online and perhaps even watch your back.

It's a solid 6/10, definitely worth 1 watch on a lazy Sunday afternoon.
