Gold
(2016)

I don't dig 'Gold'
I saw 'Gold' at a screening. It is inspired by the true events that happened in the 80's. I remember the news story, but not the exact details. If you lived in Canada in the late 80's, you couldn't avoid hearing about it in the news. Seeing this movie with this mindset, I couldn't truly dive into the story and not think about what actually happened. I might be able to enjoy it more if I don't know the events.

I'm not going to tell you how it ends. The ending makes me kind of angry because the heart of the story is misplaced. I think it is a Hollywood ending just to please the audience. If that is what actually happened, then I apologize. Matthew McConaughey has once again physically transformed himself for his role. 'Gold' is more about his lifelong aspiration than the impact of the events.

Lights Out
(2016)

Not too bad
I like the concept of the movie 'Lights Out', but the way the story was told was a bit unfulfilling. I don't particularly care much about the characters. Not enough time was spent on telling their back-stories, so I wasn't really emotionally invested in them. A snippet of how the entity came about was too short and not explicit enough to have an impact on me. For a good horror flick, I need gory details, which this movie is lacking. And the suspense wasn't long enough to keep me on the edge of my seat. It did have some jump-scare moments, though. A better director or screenwriter would have done wonders for this movie.

I do like the ending. It was touching and sad. I wish there were more moments like that throughout the movie.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows
(2016)

Enjoyable fun 3d movie for kids
I don't usually watch kids movies, but I had a ticket for an advanced screening of this movie and found it very enjoyable to watch. The actions are fast paced. And, unlike some other 3d movies, the 3d effects are well utilized. Keep in mind that this is a kids movie, the acting is a bit goofy. The plot is simple and well explained. The problems the characters face are easily resolved.

On to the criticism, I don't find Tyler Perry's acting convincing. And, even though it is an Alibaba film, the Asian characters in this movie are very light weight, including the villain Shredder. I'm not familiar with the TMNT franchise, but his role is quite weak.

The moral of the story is accept yourself and don't change who you are, which is drowned by all the action sequences. But, who cares. This movie is fun.

The VVitch: A New-England Folktale
(2015)

Horribly boring!
I went to see The Witch at an advance screening with no expectations, not watching the trailer nor reading any reviews ahead of time. I was bored to death. This movie should have been edited down to 30 minutes. The use of suspenseful music to make me anticipate something is going to happen but nothing does makes me feel humiliated. Using low lighting to minimize the visual effect of scary scenes is counterproductive. This types of techniques won't work in the horror genre nowadays. The old English language is another negative feature of this movie. The TV show My Haunted House is scarier than this movie. A horror movie fan should skip it.
