Night Sky
(2022)

What a treat!
Watched it in one go and was broken hearted to find out there will not be a second season.

It's weird I had to accidentally stumble upon this, because with such an amazing cast, well written story and intelligence and depth that I've been craving for for years, it should have been given far more attention then it got.

Only downside for me is the dialogue between the Argentinian mother and daughter. Where there different writers involved in these parts? I know, it's scifi, so it's bound to contain weird stuff. All the more important the characters react at least a little shocked when the weirdness occurs. This was absolutely no issue in the 'Illinois' parts, but the Argentinian parts, though beautifully filmed, felt slightly silly.

This small dissonance aside, I really loved watching this.

Sherwood: Episode #1.5
(2022)
Episode 5, Season 1

Gorgeous, untill..
..they asked the drunk person on set to hold the camera.

This is one of the best series I've seen this year.

The story is well told with an amazing cast and great acting. The complexity of the issue is handled with great respect.

A real treat.. I watched the first four episodes with care and respect because the makers obviously made it with the same mindset.

For me there was also a big sigh of relief because, one or two short moments aside, finally, FINALLY we got a director who didn't yank me straight out of the movie, leaving me with sickness and a headache, by using the corny documentary style camera work we are constantly fed the last decade.

Untill this episode. It is drenched in it.

I think the story is still good. Or let me rephrase, I presume it is.. I just wasn't able to watch it anymore. I feel betrayed and so very sorry for the actors who work their asses off to give us a great perfomance, only to be ruined by the horrors of the shaky camera.

So 6 for this one. No more 9.

Mark Felt: The Man Who Brought Down the White House
(2017)

Good
Good watch. Interesting story and decent acting. Nice to see Liam Neeson without running and shooting.

The art direction is amazing. Fantastic 70ties feel. But why on earth did they have to shake and sway the camera during key conversations?? Made me physically sick and complete ripped me out of the story.

Please stop this jitter nonsense.

Due to this, for me it's a 6. Could have been an 8 without the shaky cam.

Vigil: Episode #1.1
(2021)
Episode 1, Season 1

What a treat!
Just watched the first episode on bbc.

This is going to win something.

It's fresh, exciting, fast, intelligent.. and with an amazing cast that seems to get enough space to deliver some great acting.

Can't remember if I even breathed.. Anyway. Loved it, loved it, loved it!

Not even able to say something subtantial about it. Still recovering.

But going to watch it again immediately!

Needless to say i can't wait to see the rest!

The Pact
(2021)

Feel sorry for some of the actors.
It started interesting with a promise of a juicy story with a nice cast. But quickly it became far too predictable with manufactured and unbelievable characters in a chain of annoyingly stupid choices.

I decided to watch the whole thing because some reviews here mentioned an unexpected twist in the end. There was no such thing.

A few points out of respect for the actors who had to work with a very crippled script and somehow got me through the episodes.. Except for the actress who played the main character Anne. A lot of dramatic staring in the distance with her mouth open and pausing far too long before producing her lines. In the end I had to look away every time she appeared.

While almost the entire rest of the cast did a far better job on it, I would especially like to see more of Jason Hughes.

Was really good to see his face again.

LOL: Last One Laughing Australia
(2020)

I love Australian comedians now.
Parts of it I watched over and over. Becky repeating Sam while he is pumping up the pool. The fanta ritual. Frank making them quess what song the dragon device sings. Ok, there was much loudness and maybe not everyhing was briljant but there were moments of real genius.Towards the end it became harder to watch though. For me it worked best when the room was still sort of filled. And I would have loved it if the winner had shared the price. They both deserved it so much.

And BBC, perhaps a UK version?

Miss Scarlet & the Duke
(2020)

Surprising
Just watched the third episode. So far I'm surprised by how crafty the subject of male dominance is adressed in a fairly lighthearted way. Even in the present day some of Scarlets frustrations are very recognizable. For me, this is the gist of the story. The slightly far-fetched, but enjoyable storyline does its job to frame it adequately. Looking forward to seeing the rest of it. Hope it will keep. And if it turns out the whole thing is not at all about glass ceilings, equal pay, what is seen as unfeminine behaviour and so forth? Then yes, we'll always have the dresses.

Alan Bennett's Talking Heads
(2020)

Go for it
Go for it. You'll feel absolutely awfull but very, very spoiled at the same time.

I Am Not Okay with This
(2020)

They sure watched Donnie Darko..
Okay, the eighties have been cool again for some time now, I get it. It's fine to dress the whole thing up with retro stuff, from the clothing to the music up to the decor.. But for me it was very distracting and somehow 'wrong'. Yes, there were some nice and original ideas. The story in itself was entertaining enough. But they went way too far with the retro thing. It's my understanding that it's meant to take place in the present but at times i had the feeling I was looking at the decor of E.T..

Please watch Donnie Darko for the real thing, i mean, come on.. Killing time??

In the Dark Half
(2012)

Hypnotized
Yes, I also wasn't sure where the movie was heading, but I didn't mind it at all. From the first moment on it had a firm grip on me because of the eerie atmosphere, intriguing takeoff and beautiful cinematography (a joy for the senses and the stomach to NOT have to endure the documetary style restless camera. A pitty the wonderful engaging steady cam is mostly found in horror/thriller. Longing to see more of it in other genres too.)

There was a moment I felt a little annoyed by the girl because she didn't seem able to change her expression. Or say anything sensible at all. Was ready to dislike the actress (Barden) but all became clear in the end and her character was really, REALLY very troubled so the apathy turned out to be good acting. Thank goodness. What really surprised me was that it started rather unearthy, morphed into quite chilling, but ended up as a deeply sad and strangely comforting movie. Very nice.

Blue Jay
(2016)

Glad I accidentally bumped into this.
Enjoyed this movie very much. The honest dialogue, Duplass' wonderful quirkiness, the beautiful camerawork (next to NO shaky cam, what a great, GREAT relieve..) However, in contrast to other opinions here, for me Paulsons acting seemed a little light next to Marks. A bit too much of grown-up-woman-uses-plastic-smile-to-look-girly. She somehow couldn't make me believe her character fitted Marks once. But she very much made up for it in the final scenes when, let's say, the mood turns. That was a joy to watch..

The Two Popes
(2019)

Acting at its best.
Gorgeous movie. Beautiful acting and interesting subject. The conversations between the two popes are well constructed and intelligent. Felt respected as a viewer. That is.. untill the camera starts shaking, zooming in- and out and tilting in the abusive documentary style that some directors somehow need to add to perfectly good movies. Pulls me right out of the experience. My deep deep wish is that they finally grow tired of abusing our senses. Seems an insult to the wonderful actors, who need no cheap tricks to be gripping. Also, it ruins enjoying the great decors/scenery. The use of music felt a little artificial in some scenes, though i can understand the choice. Still, grateful they were able to make a (mostly) lovely movie that is interesting for both christians and non-christians..

Succession
(2018)

I.. no.
Couldn't make it through the first scene due to extremely annoying camera work. Still four points because the dialoque and acting in those few minutes seemed pretty decent.

State of Play
(2009)

Shaky cam!
Really wanted to like this but had to stop watching due to ridiculous shaky cam.

Picnic at Hanging Rock
(2018)

Looking forward to seeing the movie.
I found Natalie Dormers acting quite compelling, but she couldn't rescue the increasingly worsening affair. I barely made it through the second episode. Perhaps with less jittering, tilting, swaying, blurriness and the use of a steady cam I could actually be persuaded to keep watching. Or maybe without some of the over-the-top acting, weird senseless psychadelic scenes, annoyingly modern music, the overall attempt to add ill-suited swag and with an actual story, well, then perhaps.. But alas, this was not for me. Have high hopes for the movie, thanks for the advice.

Colonia
(2015)

Couldn't get past camerawork.
Was looking forward to seeing this, but the immediate use of the handy cam or "shaky cam" got me too annoyed and distracted to really get into it. Had to turn it off after 10 minutes.. Did get me interested in the subject though.
