Backyard Ashes
(2013)

Funny, especially for cricket fans
A mate in Australia recommended this movie to me and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's light-hearted and silly and packed with loads of subtle cricket references (Jardine, Dexter, Harlequin caps, impersonations of famous commentators etc.) which keeps the narrative moving along at a very predictable but steady pace. The story is a bit weak but it's never less than highly entertaining. At times, the stereotypes are a little obvious but remember folks that this is a COMEDY. It's meant to be funny and in the manner of the typical Australian cinematic style (and its refreshing non-conformity to a PC strait-jacket), it entertains without offending.

Da
(1988)

Delightful
Loved this movie and have played it several times over. This is the only project to top "The Quiet Man" as my favourite Irish film.

William Hickey as Drumm comes out with the keenest observations in the film, Doreen Hepburn captures the spirit of all Irish "mammies" (bless them) while the peerless Barnard Hughes adds the mischief and humour. Other parts (young Charlie, Boy Charlie and Oliver) are portrayed beautifully by a wealth of young Irish talent. The scene at the wake when the various mourners talk about the departed is 100% on the nail for accuracy.

I had the very great pleasure of meeting Martin Sheen on the set of "Da" in Ardmore studios and he was utterly charming.

Little Man
(2006)

At least SOMEBODY's going to be happy!
The producers of "The Blues Brothers II" movie and "Kicking and Screaming" (among others) will be ecstatic about this monstrosity as they will no longer be competing against each other for the title "Worst Movie Ever Made". "Little Man" is easily the most offensively bad film in creation. In the worst excesses of Hollywood, there has never been a more abysmal effort. It is quite frankly an insult to the intelligence of any sentient human. I feel violated having paid out good money to the movie theatre to sit in the audience and have it thrust on me. The only reason I didn't leave and demand my money back is that I was so shocked at how bad it was, I couldn't believe it. It was like a car crash: absolutely horrific to look at but compelling because of its awfulness. A new champion is born.

Kicking & Screaming
(2005)

Apt title
Dear Lord what an awful movie. This is the reason why Americans will never understand "saw-ker" (football). As a coach of a kids team myself, I thought I'd have a lot in common with the central character. I left the cinema with a sense of despair only to be reassured by my 10-year-old son that he didn't see any resemblance whatsoever between my coaching technique and that of the people in the movie. Their concept of football as a game for kids is fatally flawed as they seem to have missed the point of the game completely. It is NOT about fancy tricks and flicks and one man taking on the entire defence to score from about two yards. It's essentially a TEAM sport which is beautiful to watch if done properly with each member of the team contributing to the greater good and encouraging a team ethic. Once the kids get to an age when it can get really competitive (say 14 or 15), the groundwork of collective responsibility and unity should be already well and truly established.

And what is an accomplished actor of the calibre of Robert Duvall doing in this mess? Has he fallen on hard times or did he take on the role as a forfeit for losing a bet?

P.S. Having said all that, I DO enjoy winning and this year my son's team won their division... Together!
