Scooby-Doo! Curse of the Lake Monster
(2010)

Just nope
Probably the worst scooby doo I've seen ever. Made worse by the fact that some of these guys can really act and this makes them. Look incompetent. I'd much rather put the original 2 live actions on repeat than sit and watch this again. Terrible story, terrible character casting and awful cgi

Slaughterhouse Rulez
(2018)

B movie fun
Firstly this is a B movie. Don't go into it expecting amazing plots, storyline and Oscar winning performances. It's cheesy, fun and is full of predictable lines. Secondly its British, every stereotype is going in there. The cocky northern common lad who isn't good enough, fracking, jokes about politics, public schools ect. It's like Simon peggs early work but with a budget. Enjoyable and a good romp, will probably be a cult classic once it hits streaming services

The Umbrella Academy
(2019)

Great adaptation of the graphic novels
Firstly this is Dark Horse not Marvel or DC. You can't expect it to be your regular superhero show any more than the comics are family friendly. Think of it a bit like the Haunting of Hill House is to the Horror genre. More of a drama than your usual sci fi punch ups. It's an adaptation from the graphic novels rather than a step by step walk through which I found impressive. They managed to stick to the original feel of the story and expand on it in different directions to make it a captivating piece of television. I freely admit I watched the series from start to finish in one sitting and it played more like a movie than a series. All the characters were identifiable and you could relate to them all in different ways making you become more invested in the story. It had a brilliant soundtrack and the style of filming and special effects are well above what I'd expect from the series. If you're expecting a Marvel type series like daredevil then this will surprise and maybe dissapoint you, it more has the general vibe of the Watchmen movie or Gaimens American Gods. Dark and dramatic. A thoroughly unique and great series well worth a watch.

We Happy Few
(2018)

Different and interesting
I played the original demo when the crew were looking for funding and was very impressed. It has a bioshock type feel to the storyline which leaves you with that somethings not quite right feeling. The characters are not really realistic and neither are the areas but it kinda adds to its charm. A bit like the fable games in terms of graphics. I've thoroughly enjoyed playing this game as it's something different to the other things out there at the moment. I believe theres some kind of multiplayer mode also like bioshock as well but I have tried that yet.

Peter Rabbit
(2018)

Good animation, terrible script
I was expecting something similar along the lines of Babe and Nanny Mc phee. Something the family could enjoy together no matter the age range. The animation is outstanding, the animals almost look real and the sets are lovely but the writing is horrible. The cast worked well with what they had but the script instead of following a storyline seemed to be disjointed and rammed full of pop culture references, James cordens rubbish jokes and agendas. Examples include in a 15min period a lecture on using 4x4s, being a present parent and comments on the economy, a child wouldn't understand these and it's not even subtle for the adults, it's literally spelled out. I'm not against getting a message across but it's literally a break the 4th wall to lecture thing. I think it backfired a lot when you ended up with even children watching backing the human villain. I don't understand the 10 star reviews, I went in fully open minded and just believe it could have been so much better

Downsizing
(2017)

Not at all like advertised
I won't get into the entire plot or meanings behind the film because it was just nothing like the audience it was marketed at would expect. It's a dull and slow film about a guy who wants to change his life by going small. The running theme is nothing works out for the guy... Ever. Not in a comedic way or even with any expressed emotion. The ending is also just blah. No build up, it just finishes like the rest of the film. Flat

Dimension 404
(2017)

A throwback type of fun
I've seen a lot of reviews comparing the show to Black Mirror. If that's what you're expecting then you will be disappointed. 404 is more like the lighter episodes of the twilight zone crossed with the bad jokes from tales from the crypt. It's definitely a comic book type of filming. The whole feel of the show is a bit retro and cheesy and was something I'd be happy and sit and watch with older children, a bit creepy but nothing too bad with some moralistic hints. Each episode is totally different to the previous and has a completely different feel so I recommend downloading the entire series and watching together. Overall I found the show excellent and would love to see it continuing.

Houdini and Doyle
(2016)

Great show with a new twist on old characters
I've just got to the end of the first series and I'm really hoping there's going to be more.

When I started to watch this I wasn't expecting great things. In actual fact I only watched because of 2 things, I love Conan Doyle and Stephen was good as Dirk Gently.

I quickly have become a fan of this great show. The writing is superb and the sets and costumes are well done but not so elaborate they detract from the characters or the stories.

I love the way the characters are written and the actors play them very well. I particularly found Houdini cast extremely well with many complex layers to the personality showing through. Stephens portrayal of Doyle was also admirable with the nods to the techniques and skills that he used to create his character Sherlock giving the fans the homage they craved.

I will say if you are watching this series then please try not to see it as a Sherlock or a Penny Dreadful show. It is basically a murder mystery encompassing characters that are able to give it an entertaining twist. Take it with fresh eyes and enjoy it for the excellent show it is.
