Häxan
(1922)

Weird!!!
This is one very strange film. It is extremely difficult to describe it. First you have the witches making a concoction, putting real live frogs into a steaming cauldron (animal lovers it is not real! (I'm vegan, otherwise I wouldn't watch!)). The first witch is a common sight amongst the neighbouring dwellings. A 90 odd year old woman that scrounges for food from her 'friends'. Nobody dares to refuse her a meal. Next is the scene where all of the women are kissing Satans' arse. (not my word. It's in the inter-titles!). The old woman, who must have been born in the 1700s, is tortured. This is a brilliant film as long as you get the version with the Harpsicord soundtrack.I have watched this movie 5 times and I still cannot make sense of it. Believe me, this is one really cool film. I would recommend it to any silent film buffs.

Jesus of Nazareth
(1928)

I Wouldn't Bother If I Were You!
This movie really is awful. It could only be for the most religious of viewers. Some, like myself, will have difficulty understanding the inter-titles as they are taken direct from the Bible. This film is from 1928 but although it is available in an excellent condition print, it looks like a film from the early 1910s. Too much contrast. I have over 500 silent films in my collection and this is one of the few films that I have binned. I suffered it for about 45 minutes but I gave up. There is nothing to keep you interested, rather like a Charles Dickens book!. Boring, tedious and a waste of 80 minutes. I regret wasting my hard earned cash on this video. If you need to see a movie featuring 'Jesus', though not in person, try 'Intolerance'.

Walking Back
(1928)

One hell of a car fight!!!
I bought this video not knowing much about the contents, as I did most of my silent films. It is trial and error. Some are rubbish and a waste of time. 'Walking Back' though was different. It started as any other silent movie. Not much plot and the over-the-top acting which makes you feel uncomfortable. Namely the son showing his affection for his mother, way too much kissing. But then the action starts. I won't go into any detail but the highlight of the movie is the car fight. Two brand new, gleaming, sparkling, shiny 1920s cars are wrecked in a vicious 10 minute fight, a kind of Demolition Derby with just two cars (try doing 10 minutes with two Fords!!!). The stars are really getting thrown about like they wouldn't dare do nowadays and even the cameraman falls from his perch!. All comes good in the end though and I'm really glad to have this film in my collection. It's not widely available so you will have to search for it but it will be worth the effort!.
