A Good Year
(2006)

I should have known
I didn't notice this was a Ridley Scott when I started the movie, but after it was finished, I couldn't have expected anything less. This movie was charming, funny, and well worth the time spent watching it. I am certainly a sucker for romantic comedies, but this had so much more than just that. A man finding himself, coming to terms with his life, and finding his dreams that he had lost when he was a boy. Not sure a 9 even does this justice. More like a 9.9, not perfect, but REALLY good. Russel Crowe does a great job, and the supporting cast is great. Watching the movie made me want to spend some time in the south of France.

Did I mention that I don't get David Lynch movies?
I JUST finished this movie. Luckily I went into it with low expectations. About the only David Lynch movie I have ever finished without being bewildered, confused, and a little bit angry was his interpretation of Frank Herbert's Dune. But I keep watching them. When I pass by a David Lynch I haven't seen, I feel compelled to watch them. And I think the reason why is, that they draw you in.

I was deeply embedded in the storyline throughout most of the movie. At least until it started getting really strange. And when it finished, I found myself bewildered, confused, and more than just a little bit angry. I was never a horror movie fan, because I never understood the allure of feeling scared. Well that and most of them were just not scary. The only audience I can imagine Lynch appealing to is an audience that craves feeling confused. In my desperate attempt to make sense of it all, I looked up what I could on the movie through google, and I came to find that Lynch never feels inclined to explain his movies. He is even entertained by other people's interpretations of his movies. So I think Lynch got out of me exactly what he wanted.

I gave it a 4 because it was at least involving. I didn't want to stop the movie early because it really had me drawn in.

Did I mention I just don't get David Lynch movies?

I was going to give this a 5, but.....
Being that it was a fairly cookie cutter screenplay, and I've seen better acting from both Hurley and Perry, I would have normally given it about a 5. A 5 being as low as I could go and still say that I actually liked the movie. It wasn't bad. It had it's cute moments, and Matt Perry, while not as funny as say his role in The Whole Nine Yards, it was still fun to watch. But I gotta say, what bumped it up to a 6 for me was the story's, or director's ability to get some serious skin time with Liz Hurley, in the most trashiest outfit you could come up with in a Texas setting.

It wasn't a great movie, but it was at least worth a watch, for more than one reason.

Good Miyazaki!
Just got done watching the dubbed version of Porco Rosso. I don't think it was good enough to add to my Miyazaki collection, but it was very cute. The dubs were pretty bad, typical of most Miyazaki dubs. But the story line was good. And it was refreshing seeing a Miyazaki that didn't take place in a completely made up world. I'd suggest seeing it, especially if you are a Miyazaki fan. But it's stupid to say that, since if you are, you've already seen it. For those of you who aren't regular anime fans, or you have no idea who Miyazaki is, this is still a good watch. Though I'd probably suggest you cut your teeth on something a bit more audience friendly, such as Totoro, or Spirited Away.

It's a Blake Edwards...what more can I say?
If you like comedy, you like Blake Edwards no doubt. If you don't like Blake Edwards, you have no sense of humor. And we all know what Steve Martin says about that; "Of course you have a sense of humor. Everyone thinks they do, even people who don't."

But seriously, 10 is typical Blake Edwards. Another story about a Hollywood man going through a mid-life crisis. And in the case of Dudley Moore, doing it as about as humorous as he possibly can. Julie Andrews, as usual, adds so much to these movies with her dry British wit.

If you haven't seen it, and you are wondering if you should, see it. You should be ashamed for not having seen it already. If you haven't seen it, and have no interest, you must like movies about Nazis drowning puppies. And if you have seen it and regretted it, then I hope the medication is working.

Æon Flux
(2005)

Not as bad as you would think.
Sure, the story line is a little weak. But in the midst of a movie industry that can't seem to release a solid plot that doesn't seem like it was ripped off from the last two hundred movies the studio has released, even a mediocre script can be turned into a good movie, if the other elements were there. In this movie's case, they were. It had action that was well done. It had special effects that were gripping. It had a neat idea for the base of it's story. And even better, it Charlize Theron and Sophie Okonedo dressed in great outfits and bending their bodies in every-which way.

What it boils down to, if you like Sci-Fi, and you like Charlize, and even better, if you like the old cartoon, it's at least worth a watch.
