Because of the trailer I expected an almost Liam Neeson style thriller of bad guys at the beach terrorizing a father and son as they bond over surfing.
This is a very different film than that.
This film is surreal, psychological, introspective, and a little bit funny. You know as much of the plot as you need to, and other reviews cover the details, but I'm here to tell you to not expect a typical action or thriller.
Above all, the cinematography shines. More than the plot, the experience of seeing and hearing this movie is so compelling that I recommend seeing this in theaters. Absolutely a well made film, technically speaking.
It does not hold your hand as you're left stranded on the beach with a delirious Nic Cage. I asked a lot of questions as events unfolded, feeling as sunbaked and dehydrated as an American in the Australian sun, but I enjoyed every second of it!

I came into this movie knowing nothing about it except that it stars Willem Dafoe, had a cute little creature, and was an A24 production. That's all I needed to get me in the theater.
Every shot of this movie is beautifully done. The eastern European setting provides for breathtaking wideshots of landscapes, and the colors are wonderful from sunny mountains to overcast parking lots.
The soundtrack is eerie and whimsical, a combination fitting for this world which introduces us to strange creatures that also inhabit this eastern European island.
The plot is simple and serviceable, though it serves more as a vehicle for excellent cinematography than purely for its own narrative. The acting was good, and it's always a pleasure to see Willem Dafoe in great form.
This is a great film that doesn't babysit you through it. It's atmospheric and tone driven. Maybe not everyone's cup of tea but if you enjoy well crafted, slightly strange movies you should be pleased. I recommend seeing it in theaters if you can!
