Accused
(2023)

One Big Plothole
I thought much of this film was really well done. An horrific event followed by internet sleuths coming to the wrong conclusion before vigilantes come to the fore.

Here's the thing though: the bombing would be a massive investigation run by a big taskforce. The cops would be well aware of Harri being identified online as a suspect and would be wanting to speak with him as soon as possible, even if they had ruled him out and just needed to ensure his safety.

He calls 999 twice but not when there are actual intruders in his house? And he had ample time to do so before they actually got inside.

Other than that though, I enjoyed it. Pretty good effort.

Aftermath
(2021)

Truck-Sized Plot Holes and Poor Acting
So many issues, but I'll start with my major gripes:

1) Mediocre acting.

2) Unlikable characters.

3) Unrealistic reactions from the characters.

  • Picture this: you're in your sister's home. Someone keeps turning the kitchen tap on. The lights go out and you clearly hear footsteps from upstairs. Do you a) run straight out the front door or b) go upstairs to investigate? Yep, this character picks option b.

  • The lead female character goes through a traumatic series of events in her own house, but she kicks out her boyfriend and stays in the house. Dumb.

4) Plot holes. I can't even be bothered with a list.

I don't know how long the sister had been dead when the boyfriend got into bed with her corpse, but he would smell the body way before he got into bed with it.

Appallingly stupid movie and it's a shame, because the bones of a good story were there. 1 star plus 1 for keeping me watching til the end.

Wolf Creek
(2016)

S1 - 5 Stars ; S2 - 8 Stars
Series 1 got off to a great start but then it was just...meh. A fairly uninspiring female lead, incompetent police, completely unrealistic scenarios, a cast of walking cliches. Has its moments but overall, pretty disappointing.

Series 2 I really liked. A diverse cast of characters, some humour, and much more Mick Taylor.

I'm hoping Season 3 will maintain the quality of season 2 or improve on it.

The Very Excellent Mr. Dundee
(2020)

I Tapped out after 30 minutes
I didn't have high hopes for this and at the time, there were no ratings or reviews on IMDB, so I though I'd check it out.

Paul Hogan plays Paul Hogan trying to resurrect his acting career. I love Hoges, but nothing even remotely amusing had happened a third of the way through this 90 minute film. Don't let the impressive cameos fool you. This is atrocious. I can't even see who this is aimed at. Kids? Adults looking for a dose of 80s nostalgia?

Please don't even bother with this.

Poor production values, but great show
A clown on here has rated this show a 2, saying the plot is slow. It is anything but slow. Why someone who hates the show but has spent over a dozen hours watching it is beyond me, however that just illustrates how addictive it is.

Some of the acting is laughably bad, yes. The sets are cheap, the effects are relatively cheap, but overall it's well worth watching.

They really should've hired American actors to play the American characters. I doubt the Miami police walk around the office speaking Spanish to each other. That's a relatively minor gripe, but it did take me out of the story. Either way, you'll probably know by the end of the first or second episodes if this is a show for you or not.

Convict

Bad. So bad.
Some of the worst acting I've ever seen. The movie is unintentionally funny. It really is that bad.

Underbelly Files: Chopper
(2018)

Awful in every way
I'll keep it short with no spoilers. This storyline is terrible, the script is terrible, the acting is terrible. The whole show seems slapped together, looks low budget and this bloke does not have Read's mannerisms down at all.

The problem with making a show about Chopper is that in reality he was a joke in the criminal underworld. The stories in his books are fiction, so that leaves little to talk about.

If you want to see a brilliant portrayal of Chopper Read, watch Eric Banner in Chopper.

This was easily the worst Underbelly series made.

Heartthrob

Surpringly Good "Straight to DVD" Movie
I wasn't expecting much from this one and certainly, there's nothing original about this boy-meets-girl-boy-becomes-creepy-obsessive plot, but for what it is, it's fairly well done.

It's well paced, with fairly good acting and dialogue. My main gripe *spoilers ahead* is that the movie completely ignores the police investigation into the murder of Henry's first victim. I felt a couple of scenes with the police questioning Henry and some of the other kids could've been added to what was a fairly short running time.

All in all, nothing special, but worth a look.

The Lego Ninjago Movie
(2017)

Cinematic Cancer
Where do I even start with this? I'm gobsmacked that the average rating for this is 6.5, although I expect that to fall as more people see it.

Pretty much devoid of plot and completely devoid of wit, humour, or good writing. This is everything the Lego Movie wasn't. I wanted to leave after 20 minutes, it was that bad.

My 10 year old son enjoyed it and some may say I'm not the target demographic, but here's the thing about a GOOD kid's movie: it appeals to everyone.

This 100 minute Lego advertisement is terrible in every way, with absolutely no redeeming qualities whatsoever. I'd rather visit a proctocologist than watch this again. Pure cinematic cancer. And Aids. And syphilis. I was praying to God for the movie to end and I'm an Atheist.

Recommended to absolutely no one. I'd rate it zero if I could.

The Emoji Movie
(2017)

Vile premise for a kid's movie
The less said about this vile, 90 minute ad, the better. This manipulative excuse for a movie deserves a 1 star in the hope that if it's universally panned, the studios won't be tempted to produce more of this vomit.

I've noticed several 10 star reviews for this movie. Do not take any notice. These people are either trolls, or sad, obvious shills. They say alcohol consumption kills brain cells; it has nothing on this garbage.

Buried
(2010)

Suspenseful, well executed thriller.
*I will warn you of spoiler alerts before you read them*

Paul Conway, a civilian truck driving contractor working in Iraq, wakes up to find himself in a wooden coffin with only a zippo lighter and a working cell phone.

When I first read the synopsis, I thought...surely they can't sustain this for 90 minutes. I was wrong. Never once was a bored watching this movie. I thought Ryan Reynolds did a great job, although his actions at times were quite stupid, but having said that, how would I behave in the same situation?

*MINOR SPOILER WARNING*

At one point, a snake gets into the coffin with Paul. It looks venomous. What would you do in this situation? If it got in, it can get out. Would you just stay still (as you should be anyway) and wait for it to move on, or would you break the glow stick thingy you found, splash some of the flammable liquid on the snake, then light it ON FIRE. Already he has very little oxygen. It was frustratingly stupid. I just had to vent on that.

*END SPOILER*

This is very low budget by Hollywood standards. It relies on good writing, good pacing, and good suspense. Very well done movie.

Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens
(2015)

Star Wars - Recycled Plot Awakens
A droid containing vital information is being pursued by the bad guys on a desert planet. The droid's orphan companion meets up with a new friend, a smuggler and a wookie. Meanwhile, the bad guys have built a massive weapon capable of destroying planets. Luckily the good guys figure out they need to take out the shield then fly fighters at its core to blow it up. Also, there is an old Jedi who has exiled himself to a remote location and the main bad guy wears all black and a mask which makes his voice sound scary. There is the surprise death of a main character and "surprise" revelation about family members.

Does any of the above sound familiar? It should because it's almost a direct copy of Episode IV's plot with elements of the other movies of the original trilogy thrown in.

Let's start with the bad so we can finish on a positive note.

1) Don't they have email or something similar in this universe? Why are they still relying effectively on carrier pigeon (droid) to relay vital information. It's ridiculous.

2) The Villain: sorry, but this has to be the wimpiest Star Wars villain ever. I thought the prequel Anakin was the whiniest little sook in the galaxy until I saw Kylo Ren. Yes he's obviously powerful, but when it comes to lightsaber duels he struggles to beat a garbage man (Finn literally worked in the sanitation area of the super weapon) and a girl who found out five minutes earlier that she had special powers. What the...?

He could easily force choke or force push both of them so why didn't he? Doesn't make sense.

3) What the hell happened in the previous 30 years? Really, there's no discussion about what has happened, how First Order and the supreme leader came about, how Kylo Ren turned to the dark side etc etc. I know you need to be mindful of info dump conversations and flashbacks but I think we needed something to fill in those years.

I shouldn't have been surprised at the laziness of the writers but I was. There's so many ways they could've gone with this and they took the easiest way. Recycle recycle recycle.

The good:

1) I loved the way this movie looked. Had that gritty look that the original movie had. The thing I hated about the prequel trilogy was how intrusive the CGI was. Everything was a little too glossy for my liking. As always the creatures, aliens, ships etc looked great.

2) Humour. I know some people didn't like the humour in this movie, but humour, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder.

3) The old: was great to see the old characters again.

So why 7 out of 10 rating then? Because it's Star Wars: fun, action filled, not something to be taken too seriously. Switch your brain off for a couple of hours and just enjoy it for what it is. Just don't expect anything new or even creative.
