CSI: Vegas: The Promise
(2023)
Episode 17, Season 2

Reminded me of old skool CSI with Grissom and crew
Loads of character driven story development in this episode, by far my fav of the new series and I really like the current team even more now. Greg was great to see, Roby is nicely falling into her role and whilst she doesn't have the quirk of Grissom or Russell, she has her own extremely likeable qualities.

This episode had a bit of everything that has made CSI Vegas so great ever since I started watching it back in my college days, and it's great to see the writing hasn't let up at all. The forensic science is still excellent, the script is well thought out, the crimes are just compelling and initially mysterious enough to keep you guessing, and the scenes are well paced leaving you enough time to take in what's just happened before the next series of developments.

I've watched all the CSI series and Vegas remains my favourite for sure, and i future episodes are like this, then this won't change, ever.

The Last of Us: Long, Long Time
(2023)
Episode 3, Season 1

Superb storytelling and connecting up Joel's past to the present.
Great episode This had a bit of everything in it, the turning point when Joel realised his purpose and actually has some respect for Ellie now and the purpose of protecting her rather than just a person that may or may not be important but he vowed to take from A to B.

Ellie also realising what's at stake as an overall picture, especially after reading the letter, Joel realising that men like him are few and far between, but they just know like some kind of sixth sense when someone like them is in front of them, hence why Bill said what he did in the letter..

They both knew from day 1, but it needed to be read by Joel for it to be affirmed.

The initial steps to Joel & Ellie's story and how their relationship forms a bond have now been shown and from here on we get to the really cool parts. That seatbelt scene especially is so simple but also powerful. There's no need to seatbelt up in that time any more, there's no traffic, but he made a point to buckle up.

Seven Worlds One Planet
(2019)

Superb, simply put
Always a fan of Sir David's works and this is no different. The BBC has a monolith like arm for cinematic splendour, and as a photographer myself, seeing the behind the scenes at the end is always inspiring.

I also found out that the cine lenses they use are Canon 70-1000mm, yes 1000mm! Those things cost around £70,000 each. This kind of gives you an idea on the type of distances they are from the wildlife to get many of the shots that would otherwise be impossible.

The musical score, the action, the insight and the narration, a better combination that Hollywood movies costing hundreds of millions of dollars.... And you end up having a new found respect and understanding for nature as a whole.

New Amsterdam
(2018)

Moving, amusing and also inspiring
The ending of the series has some really good voiceover narration which sums up my review title. It doesn't spoil the ending for anyone, but just incase, skim past the news paragraph.

"So is the world dark?" "Sure" "But there's light..." "So much light"

I've watched a number of dramas lately and New Amsterdam along with This Is Us will remain probably my top 5 dramas of all time. The way the actors humanise the characters is outstanding, and the script writers and director deserve awards for this level of complexity that anyone who has any fair share of life experience can relate to.

And this is what it's all about, isn't it? To be able to think about your own life and be inspired to do something good, because even the smallest act of kindness will have a major impact on someone else's life.

Shows like these may be fiction, but they sure do make us aware of ourselves, that we are still human, even with all the harshness out in the world. Shows like these tell us a deeper message, that people are social beings, and we need to help each other out even through tough times.

The Night Of: The Call of the Wild
(2016)
Episode 8, Season 1

I have never rated an episode 10 stars before...
But wow, what an amazing finale. I never thought a courtroom segment could be so nail biting. I have watched some films starring John Turturro, but not all. But I'll be damned if his closing speech wasn't one of his greatest moments in film to date.

Everything was just top tier, from the writing to the delivery by every actor in this.

I don't want to post spoilers, but this really is how a finale should be done. I am so glad I caught wind of this series, I have been recommending it to everyone who has asked me what they should watch next.

Better Call Saul
(2015)

Met my expectations, and then some... so far.
As with Sausage1's review, it's probably wise to not judge the whole show yet but indeed, we have a solid grounding from BB and some familiar faces have already cropped up.

It will definitely be interesting to see where those characters fit into the story and timeline and the show progresses.

The same cool quirks that made me enjoy BB and a pretty sweet musical score throughout as well as the classic BB colour tone to the print made everything feel familiar.

It may even be reason to re-watch BB at some point soon just to pick up on some early bit in the series that might cross reference to Saul. need to see a few more episodes to decide for sure though.

Really enjoyed it and am looking forward to episode 2 tomorrow!

The Leftovers
(2014)

Wasn't sure of it at first but now 6 episodes in and I am hooked.
I'll say this, I was captivated by the mystery of LOST up to around season 5, I think most of us were in fact and while the writing of that series chopped and changed a number of times as the seasons piled on I think Leftovers will head a different direction given the lessons that were learnt from that.

Now, on to this series. I wasn't sure I'd like this at first but the mystery pulled me right in and each episode I found myself asking more questions as none of the previous were really answered.

I've been really surprised by the characters. Some are humorous and some are very serious. All appear authentic and likable whether they're good or bad in the show world.

It's not filled with gushing gore like other shows out there nor does it fill your ears with expletives either. It does have both but it has them in just the right amounts at just the right times.

I find no clues are made obvious and you're left to think for yourself and decide upon what's happening. It's hard to describe properly without posting spoilers but I find it thoroughly enjoyable now.

The musical score is very dramatic and suits the supposed divine direction many of the characters and/or groups of the show would have you believe.

Eager to see how things develop with this and if the first 6 episodes are anything to go by then I do hope it continues.

I know many people won't like it still and going by some of the reviews, well, many of them here... Many people just don't seem to want to like a show like this. maybe they feel let down still by the outcome of LOST or maybe they just want a series that requires minimal concentration I don't know and I'm not qualified to pass judgement here but what I can say is that I find the series really really good so far and usually it's very difficult for me to find a show that I can go "Yes, I will add this to my TV library and tell my friends about it".

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
(2013)

Brilliant, moving, life affirming.
I agree with what filmgal14 has said. To the right person it's really a brilliant film and the obvious flaws can be put aside to enjoy the kind of message this story tells.

Ben Stiller was a good choice to play the role of Walter too, I don't think it would have worked quite as well with any other actor I imagine playing it. The supporting cast were equally good I felt. The only one I wanted to throw an anvil at was Ted (played by Adam Scott), mostly for that beard!

The musical score and cinematography were great and went really well with whatever was happening on screen.
