Out of Love
(2019)

Confused screenplay
This is a copy an English web series Doctor Foster and looks lost in translation. Culturally Indians are lot different than British, so a lot of things look odd and weird. Which girl would let a doctor know of her personal love life on her first appointment and that too knowing that she is her boyfriend's wife? Coonoor is filled with the likes of Kapoors and Kashyaps than locals. What exactly is the point of the whole story as the cheating husband seems to be in a good space with his new wife and baby settled in a new city. He should have been down in the dumps right? Acting wise apart from Rasika and Harsh Chhaaya everyone was just okay.

Kumbalangi Nights
(2019)

Food for the soul
This has to be one of the best films ever made in Malayalam. If I had to express how I felt after watching it, I would say my soul feels full & happy.

Kumbalangi looks beautiful like a poetry in motion, it's residents all ordinary & real, nothing spectacular about them. And that's where lies the beauty of the film and the talent of the filmmaker. He creates a world so real, emotions so raw, that you cannot but feel for the characters. Soubin has delivered a performance which is par excellence & his scene with the psychiatrist is a cathartic experience not just for him but for the audience as well. Under any other actor Shammy would have been a caricature, but Fahad is brilliant & original as usual. Anna Ben is impressive & Shane Nigam is charming. Glad to see strong female characters, Grace Antony steals the mosquito bat scene. No character is wasted, each has a role taking forward the movie towards the climax which has some hilarious action.

Don't miss this gem of a movie for anything.

Searching
(2018)

Brilliant, must see
After a long time a movie which not only touches you emotionally but also keeps you glued with suspense till the very end. I think every parent with a growing up teen needs to watch this. The concept is very interesting. It is heartbreaking to know how little you know about your kids, as technology has taken over our lives. Also, the difference between real world and virtual world is well highlighted here. A must see movie, one of the best I have seen in recent times.

Kalank
(2019)

Not bad, not good enough
Well, honestly the movie was not as bad as I had expected after the reviews. It's has got some decent acting by Varun, Aditya & Alia. Few of the emotional scenes were done well. It could have been a good movie but the point is the film got bogged down by its ambition to become this classic epic tragic period love saga. There is not enough depth in the romantic track between Alia and Varun for you to feel for them. Screenplay is a confused mess, no solid plot. Good actors like Madhuri, Sonakshi & Sanjay Dutt are wasted. Idiotic bull fight and useless item numbers and unwanted scenes make the movie slow and dragging. There is no humour and the mood is always like a tragedy being played out. It's like a wannabe SLB movie gone all wrong. Obviously no one would want to waste their time and money over this. So understandably the movie flopped big time.

Now that the movie is on Amazon Prime, watch it if you have the time and patience to go through it.

Bombay to Goa
(1972)

Enjoyable comedy
A fun ride with some hilarious moments during the bus journey, a special appearance by Kishore Kumar and a vintage Usha Uthup & Amitabh Bacchans first movie as a hero. This movie will always be remembered for giving us the hit song "Dekha na".

Made in Heaven
(2019)

Unique experience
Made in Heaven is a unique and a emotionally rich experience which will definitely touch the chords of your heart. The way you feel for the characters, I bet you would have never ever felt so strongly. What I liked the most was none of them are flawless or perfect. Each one of them come with their own flaws, insecurities, anxieties and secrets buried deep within their souls. Whether it may be the uber rich or simple middle class every one has a cross to bear. Huge respect to Arjun Mathur for portraying a gay character with so much dignity and breaking all stereotypes. He is outstanding. Shobhita as Tara rocks. A very brave performance. Kalki is good as the emotionally tormented Faiza. Jim Sarbh's Adil could have better etched as he looks confused. I loved Shivani as Jazz and Shashank as Kabir, hope their tracks would be explored more in season 2. A negative would be that the weddings totally got sidelined towards the end as the personal tracks of the lead got more prominent. Nevertheless, this one's not to be missed.

Tumbbad
(2018)

Mind-blowing
Mind-blowing, finally an Indian movie matching international standards. "The world has enough for everyone's need, but not enough for everyone's greed". This quotation by Mahatma Gandhi sums up the entire movie. Spectacularly shot, the film looks virtually real. Even the most repulsive looking things look scaringly real which is a victory in itself. All the the actors especially the child actors have done an excellent job.

Aruvi
(2016)

Good but short of Brilliant
Saw the movie with lot of expectations after reading positive reviews. Expectations peaked after the wonderfully conceptualised hostage sequence. But really disappointed as the movie loses its plot from thereon and you end up thinking what was the purpose after all. Is it to raise awareness about HIV, is it against consumerism, is it about reckless college goers, is it a revenge drama, or is about parental bond? It ultimately ends up as a confusing mish mash of all.

Aditi Balan is superlative as Aruvi. Special mention for Anjali Varadhan, who plays Emily, a transwoman with lot of grace and dignity.

96
(2018)

A beautiful ode to Love
What a beautiful movie, so simple and so elegantly told. Ram and Janu will be forever etched in our hearts. In today's date when everything including love is instant, 96 is like slow brewing filter coffee which will blow you away with its aroma. In one word, Brilliant.

Arjun Reddy
(2017)

Overrated
Highly overrated. Is this never ending confused mess of a film a cult classic as claimed by a section of people? On one hand the hero Arjun rebukes someone for objectifying women and on the other hand treats a girl as his own property. Cringe-worthy double standards. All stars are for the actors who have put their whole and soul into the movie.
