Royal Pains
(2009)

Updated: No Good Enough Even with FF
Overall, good acting and premise. Beautiful scenery. Some likeable characters. It's a procedural so because it doesn't have stronger plot and writing, it got stale pretty quickly. Characters, except for Paige and Evan were pretty one note so it was hard to care about them. The medical pieces, especially showing the medical procedures in the field dragged. Like many others have already said, fast forward through them. If you are looking for a mostly non objectionable way to pass the time, Royal Pains could work if you can accept it for what it is, an episodic cozy medical mystery in a beautiful setting with unlikable hypocritical main characters. Hank and Divis become unwatchable.

Happiness for Beginners
(2023)

Confused by Low Rating
I enjoyed this quiet, reflective, short movie. The cast, the scenery, the theme were all good and keep my interest. The dialog was occasionally uneven, but did not distract in a major way. For the people complaining about the lead actress being awkward or the camp leader being annoying - they were doing their job because that's the character they were portraying. I found all of the actors endearing. In an effort to meet the word limit I will also say that I haven't watched a movie in years. I mostly binge series and this has gotten me interested in finding some similar types of movies to watch in the future.

Who Killed Jill Dando?
(2023)

Tedious
I expected more from a docuseries about world class journalists investigating the murder of a beloved and celebrated anchor woman. Slow, meandering, and truly boring, this series just doesn't go anywhere.

I didn't know of Jill Dando before viewing this and the series was woefully remiss in creating sympathy or empathy for her - beyond the fact she was a human who was killed. The series like Ms. Dando was poorly executed.

I suggest you do what I did, which is to turn it off and investigate online to understand how the story turned out and the fast forward through the last episode and a half or so.

The Orville
(2017)

Just Bad
I love the genre and many of the actors so it is a shocker that I don't like this series at all. It's either not serious enough to be in the later Star Trek realm nor self-aware enough to be in the original Star Trek realm. The CGI is often good or very good, but the costume and make up are so distracting at times that they both pull the viewer out of the experience. Even though the concepts for each episode are often very compelling, it is the writing that ruins it. Jokes don't land and the wording is often clunky and cringy. The two male leads are unlikable and their storylines just worsen it.

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One
(2023)

Cringe, cringe, cringe!
Good premise, some decent acting. However, everything else could only be described as hokey. The writing and delivery of lines led to eye rolls and audible groans. The hype is always that Tom Cruise does his own stunts, but I think that just underscores that the stunts are mediocre. Because they can only push him so far, the stunts are not as visually appealing, or as breathtaking because he is just older and less accomplished in this way. I feel like he has a Putin complex- surrounded by yes-men so he doesn't have any idea that he is an aging man who has lost much of his appeal. He would be better moving to a senior agent role and recruiting some new eye candy that is believable in the role. Also this movie was almost 3 hours long...I believe it's because Tom Cruise can't leave any of his "exceptional" work on the cutting room floor. We won't return for part two but my suggestion is to hire a strong editor for the next movie maybe some others will.

Gilmore Girls
(2000)

Meh
It isn't very good and it doesn't hold up. The characters (really most of them) are one-note and unlikable. The mother-daughter dynamic is very unhealthy and requires the daughter to be the parent far too often. I am nearing the end of the first season and will watch a bit of the second season to see if the the actors grow or the characters develop but I don't have high hopes. If they do I will report back.

One thing I think is interesting is that ASP developed this same concept for Mrs. Maisel and it work's beautifully. The characters on Maisel are rich and interesting and the stories are compelling x.

Lockwood & Co.
(2023)

Good YA Fare
Good plot, good acting, good special effects. It's really is the best of YA/young adult series content. I found the storyline interesting and I am certainly looking forward to season two. The cliffhanger left me wanting more.

That said, of you don't like YA/young adult or fantasy or suspending reality, this isn't for you. Go away. Stop rating things that weren't made for you. It would be like me rating the Fast and the Furious movies harshly because I don't like bro movies and loud, fast cars.

I have to say some more...I wasn't aware Lockwood and Co was a book series so I will plan to read them.

Alaska Daily
(2022)

Surprisingly Good
I had low expectations for this series but like a good newspaper Alaska Daily delivers.

Positives? Strong cast, interesting story, and good acting from the primary cast to the supporting cast. I also appreciate that we get a bit of the Alaskan landscape.

Not-so-positive? My one complaint is that the series is a bit small sometimes meaning that it's a little slow - not a lot, just sometimes, the acting is sometimes a bit flat - even the lead who is well known for her emotional performances. Not reasons to miss this series, just the reason for rating it a 9/10.

If you have grown away from network television, Alaska Daily is a good reason to come back.

Anne
(2017)

Joyful
From beginning to end, Anne with and E was such an enjoyable experience. Beautiful scenery, wonderful actors, and heartwarming stories. The music was also exceptional and I'm not really a music person. I am a historical fiction fan and this series did not disappoint as the writers interwove the issues of the day into the lives of Anne and her friends and loved ones. Unlike some other reviewers I think the topics are universal in themes of strife and coming together to overcome the strife, and not some liberal hijacking. I was sad to see this series and and hope that maybe there will be a movie to tie up loose ends.

Derry Girls
(2018)

Delightful
This series is so enjoyable and waxing season just got better. The silliness belies stories that are insightful and heartwarming. The writing is layered and with a good mix of fun and meaningful storytelling. The younger actors are darling - the weans (in Derry speak) have grown so much over the three seasons.

Instead of bemoaning the actors ages, think how we as adults think about ourselves in retrospect and that we would remember ourselves a bit older.

If you can't understand accents, turn on the captioning and stop complaining. Do something to your shortcoming and stop giving a lower rating.

Nine Perfect Strangers
(2021)

Deeply Flawed
Great acting earned the one star. Disgusted by the abuse and the message its worth being abused by a narcissist or being abused by a narcissist leads to redemption or growth. I was a fan of this author but will never read or watch their work again. Disgusting. Run towards better content.

The Bureau of Magical Things
(2018)

Enjoyable Magical Distraction!
Fun all the way through both seasons. Likable characters. Good plot and subplots. The acting and writing improved over time. The harsh criticism is undeserved. If you don't like fantasy and younger performers, this series is not for you.

Save Yourselves!
(2020)

Enjoyable
Good acting, good story, and really something different. Overall a fun watch and a pleasant way to spend some time. I don't understand the low ratings.

Would I Lie to You?
(2022)

It Made Us Laugh
This is just silly fun. All involved are talented and funny. I am not familiar with the original but as a stand alone this is a pleasant way to spend 30 minutes.

Life & Beth
(2022)

Endearing and Imperfect
Endearing! I applaud the pace, the characters and the tone. Wonderfully uncomfortable as the characters grow and progress. If you are expecting a Jim Carrey movie from the 1980s, this series isn't for you so move on.

SurrealEstate
(2021)

Updated S2: Gave it some time.
Season1: Likable cast and great premise. Writing is clever at times. Need a little stronger episode storylines.

Season 2: Surreal Estate is cozy fun with each episode focused on a paranormal mystery. Overall, it is a home run if you can practice the suspension of disbelief to have a good time. The CGI or other means of creating ghosts isn't always successful but is balanced by good performances and enjoyable storytelling .

Gender Revolution
(2017)

Good primer for understanding
As an older cis-female, I had many questions about gender. The trans world is a little hard to understand when I have always felt female and currently don't know anyone who is in the trans community. This documentary provided answers to my very basic questions and reminded me we are all living in the same world and real people are living with misunderstanding, bias, and intolerance. I am glad I didn't rely on the incomprehensible and intolerant negative review to influence my viewing choice. Katie Couric just keeps getting better.
