The Help
(2011)

Sadly... another worst movie based on a book I have ever seen
So glad I purchased the book after watching the trailers, this movie was loosely based on the book and so bad I wrote to the Author of book.

As all movie trailers should come with warning - the following scenes are shown out of context to the movie as a whole while the BOOK was a splendid look at the life of one girl raised on a cotton plantation - this movie is about the treatment of the servant class, the movie is about poking fun at the treatment of blacks, and should you have read, comprehended, acknowledged the subject, location and time of the BOOK writing this movie will disappoint.

Not sure that the makers of the movie actually read the book for knowledge to assist in the making of their movie, or to portray the servant class as undesirable, instead of extremely useful members of society, that are unfairly paid to do a job we do not want.

The scenery is great, the weather is wonderful, the cast are brilliant and the vehicles and houses are fabulous.

Gilded Newport Mysteries: Murder at the Breakers
(2024)

alack, alas...
...when an author of two series you have followed for years turns her work over to become unrealistic portrayals one cannot help feeling betrayed.

Not only does the author allow her work to be dressed up like a tart, her work is then turned into the ridiculous in a television movie, which in turn allows the name of a very good murder mystery book series to be dragged through the Hallmark spit and polish machine to become shiny, flashy and gaudy with no true redeeming features.

The Hallmark gilded age murder mystery series bears very little resemblence to the books they are based on.

Alyssa Maxwell you have let yourself down, while the main cast of characters in your novels fight for their rights as individuals, and the rights of the down trodden, you have pimped the characters, props and scenery up and sold them off to the highest bidder.

The movie is a mite purdy, and like a lot of purdy thangs, it lacks any form of substance to recommend the book series or Author.

LIGO
(2020)

Informatively interesting curiosities
This movimentary is brilliant boffins at their very best.

Waves of air or light or sound create nano vibration... after ascertaining it is not an earthquake 2000 miles away, a truck driving past or boy racers doing handbrake pulls at really high speeds in the next county.

Our cast of MANY lettered, nationalities, accented, tee shirt wearing smarty panted human brains look into the cosmos quietly in case... heaven forbid it is a !?! Hoax - I mean... who/what/why ?!?

While no previous knowledge of space and it's 'capacity' is needed to watch this exciting journey, a healthy respect for the years of life these people have donated in their quest for ultimate light bulb moment that will not bring sponsorship deals, multi million dollar player contracts or publicity deals.

So glad we have the super brainy who with much determined patience and dedication gladly provide us with the answers to questions that are important to our future knowledge.

Brilliant.

Inside Job
(2010)

US taxpayers financing the top 1%
This is America at its best.

The US administration since the 60's has successfully utilized working class American taxpayers to keep the top 1%.

What a disappointing lack of self respect successive US Administration's must have, they point their grubby fingers at any nation they think is treating its citizens badly.

All the while trampling on the US taxpayers own fingers by enabling greedy money managers to escape legal punishment for crimes against its own citizens.

Matt Damon narrates this documentary so beautifully you could almost imagine him blushing.

This brilliant exposé of SUA (states uniting america) provides reasons why the rest of the world needs to protect itself from the liars administrating for the 1%.

Shotgun Wedding
(2022)

3 stars... because 1 is the loneliest number
Sooo... Cheech Marin is father of the bride.

Jennifer Coolidge is mother of the groom.

Lenny Kravitz the ex-boyfriend.

Sonia Braga is mother of the bride.

D'Arcy Carden is Marin's girlfriend.

Alas four of these stars are unable to enliven or give me reason a to recommend this movie.

After watching the trailer on Amazon Prime and knowing a good supporting cast can carry a bad movie, disappointment prevailed, no supporting cast could make this movie good.

This is not a comedy, it is two maybe three snorts of almost laughter.

This is not even close to an action movie.

This is not romance.

The soundtrack was brilliant, for me, two of the three best parts are when the cast all sing along though, on two separate occasions.

Three Pines
(2022)

Picture me jumping up and down, clapping my hands and grinning wildly :-)
Brilliant, a major bravo to author Louise Penny for not giving away all the goood things your books encompass and keep drawing us - your devoted adherents; back to your next and next and next books.

The cast is a nice mix of definitely experienced thespians unknown to me.

The screenplays are so close enough to the original story you are not wanting to scream at another botched book to screen adaptation.

In my imagination
  • the books regular character's are bigger, crazier, fatter, louder, messier, prettier, and stranger,
  • the village itself is small enough for the marshmallows in my hot chocolate from the Cafe, not to melt before drinking it on the Surprised by Joy bench.

  • St Michael's is snugglier.

And the food sounds tasty enough to eat off the page.

Thank you to the cast for being their character so well, it was uncanny.

Big thank you to Louise Penny for writing the books. :-)

The Spy Who Dumped Me
(2018)

Great chick flick
Mila and Kate are the girl ultimate tourists, the two of them more than up-staged the pretty-ish boys who were playing the man spy's.

Hungary and Budapest played the scenery so beautifully you understand why they are holiday destinations.

This is a visually appealing movie, not a lot of beautiful people cluttering up the landscape, the best scene was when the girls hi-jack a Jaguar, the rest of the car scenes were excellent with their lack of realism.

Apart from that the movie was a funny real, in that Mila and Kate were very at home in their roles, which is always a comfortable watch.

Thank you Mila and Kate, a marvellous choice of script, much appreciated :-)

Indian Summers
(2015)

Colourful
On reflection Indian Summers started as it meant to go.

A rather grim portrayal of the rather large majority of the English - many of them, men and women who had been to packed off by parents in disgust; riding roughshod over the Indian population in India during the empire's governance.

While the wardrobe designer did a fabulous job on all gowns they were not patch on the beautiful colours and fabrics of the Indian.

Alas, it was the aristocracy of both the English and Indian who showed themselves to be full of their own self aggrandisement, exhibited in sordid immoral behaviour.

Overall the landscape was the most consistent untainted beauty well worth watching, while the characters played their part.

Un asunto privado
(2022)

Fast and funny
The soundtrack is in Spanish, I have English subtitles on.

This is one of the funniest foreign series I have watched, so funny in fact that the subtitles are almost superfluous.

The cast is made up of normal looking people, so no one has more screen time.

This is one case spread over eight episodes, the indoor and out scenery is gorgeous.

I'm thinking the father was DCI, the son is now DCI, the Mother really politely drinks, the daughter trained by the father - is a girl; so not police material, the butler is more General Factotum and fabulous.

This will be watched again and again just for the seriously humorous danger filled escapades of daughter and butler on the trail. :-)

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot
(2016)

Natural scenery is beautiful.
Kim Barker wrote such an interesting book which includes a brief modern history of Afghanistan - should you read enough books about the Taliban you will know there is a lot of truth to her unprovable facts; then get backs into the conflict in Afghanistan, those defending the Afghani and cultural differences between east and west.

Am not finding it hard to understand how Hollywood churned that book into bigotry, lies and sex, and maybe the purpose of making this movie was to show how truly revolting American's in a foreign country can be.

The scenery of was the best part of the movie based so loosely on The Taliban Shuffle that Kim Barker should embarrassed, this movie portrays journalists as tasteless, oversexed, drunks with little or no moral backbone tarring all journalist who have spent time in war zones for our erudition with the same brush.

Disappointment tramps through this movie wearing golf cleats.

Spencer
(2021)

Another bad example of artistic license for profit
Spencer, like Jackie has been abused by artistic license, in pursuit of profit.

Why is it that the women who marry men who eventually exhibit low moral character are portayed as weak, mentally unstable, unintelligent and needy.

The architecture, scenery and wardrobe in this movie were great.

This family get together for ritual Christmas gathering is so like many, anyone born between 1950 - 1970 will remember with mirth, merriment and many asides told of times gone by.

Disappointed I stopped my Audible book to watch this movie, judging by parental tolerance Charles behaviour was actually intolerable to all of the adults who were towing the line while he ignored the rules.

So if you do watch this movie, do not look for any reasonable excuse for it's existence other than profit via pretence.

A League of Their Own
(2022)

Girls playing
What a fabulous series, here is where the rest of the world gets to see what an american second class citizen looks like and SHE is feisty, opinionated and a fine example to womanhood.

Love the choices the girls had to make, and the determination that they show in those choices.

This is an excellent look at the overall ugliness that to me is America.
